اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِاللَّهِ

وَعَلَى الْأَرْوَاحِ الَّتِي حَلَّتْ بِفِنَائِكَ

عَلَيْكُمْ مِنَّا جَمِيعًا سَلاَمُ اللَّهِ أَبَدًا مَا بَقِينَا وَبَقِيَ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ

وَلا جَعَلَهُ اللَّهُ آخِرَ الْعَهْدِ مِنَّا لِزِيَارَتِكُمْ

Peace be upon you, O Aba Abdillah (O Husayn),
and upon the souls who have gathered in your courtyard.

Upon you, from us all, is the peace of God—forever,
for as long as we remain and as long as night and day endure.

And may God never make this our last pledge to visit you.

Peace be upon al-Husayn,
and upon Ali, son of al-Husayn,
and upon the children of al-Husayn,
and upon the companions of al-Husayn.

Introduction

Nine nights, we have walked.

We recovered the word — shahada means witness, with the cost of witnessing borne in the body.

We traced its lineage from Abel, through the prophets — Noah, Abraham, John the Baptist, Zechariah, Jesus — through Hamza, to the Prophet Muhammad, and to a plain in Iraq.

We learned the theology of Shaheed Mutahhari’s five kinds of death — and the candle of society that has to burn for the room to be illuminated.

We heard Imam Husayn’s diagnosis at Mina and the three silences — fear, comfort, and the narrowing of moral vision.

And we received what Dr Shariati gave us, in his sociology — the distinction his Tashayyu’-e Alawi and Tashayyu’-e Safavi pointed toward, which our series has carried since as the shahada of the tongue and the shahada of the life.

We stood at the shared ground and the divergences between the Christian witness and our own, and we named the methodology that has carried us forward since:

The disciples of Jesus, son of Mary —

قَالَ الْحَوَارِيُّونَ نَحْنُ أَنصَارُ اللَّهِ آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَاشْهَدْ بِأَنَّا مُسْلِمُونَ

“The disciples said: We are the helpers of God. We have believed in God; bear witness that we are submitters.”

The same root the Qur’an used for them is the root that holds this whole series together.

We left the religious neighbour and entered the secular one — Marx, Fanon — and we asked what becomes of sacrifice when the form is preserved and the content is missing.

We refused the cheap clipped reading of Marx’s famous sentence, and we heard the diagnosis the prophets had already made from inside before Marx made it from outside.

We walked the anti-colonial road — Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, Quang Duc, and, in our own hour, Aaron Bushnell.

We asked the question the night turned on:

And in the maqtal we walked with al-Abbas ibn Ali, at the Euphrates — and the hands that did not drink.

We walked into the most difficult panel — the aesthetic-state-manufactured panel.

Bushido.

The kamikaze cockpit.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the other side.

Both empires in August 1945.

And we received the line that has become the structural pivot of this entire series — Sayyedah Zaynab in the court of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad in Kufa, answering the tyrant in three words:

مَا رَأَيْتُ إِلَّا جَمِيلًا

I saw nothing but beauty.

The seventy-two whose loyalty was to God Himself, to the Truth God had revealed, and to Imam Husayn as the proof of that Truth on earth — not to a flag, not to an emperor, not even to a man as such.

And last night — the corrective night.

The four counterfeits: political, ritual, cultural, and — for the first time in the series — imperial.

The three tests of true witness.

The young Iranian martyr named in honour of Mohsen ibn Ali, the first martyr of the Ahl al-Bayt after the passing of the Prophet — and how Hajj Qasem, named him a hujjat on how to live and how to die.

And Imam Khamenei sealed it:

شهید حججی حجت خدا در مقابل چشم همگان شد.

“Martyr Hojaji became God’s proof before everyone’s eyes.”

Nine nights of building.

Tonight is the tenth.

We are at the door of the day.

In a few hours, when this hour closes and the night turns, the day of Ashura begins.

Imam Husayn — at the moment we begin tomorrow’s morning — will be standing in his armour, leading the morning prayer at Karbala for the last time.

By noon, he will be on the ground.

By the afternoon, the horses will have crossed his body.

Every one of those nine nights — every taxonomy, every witness, every cross-tradition figure, every quotation we recited together, every tear we shed — was preparation for this hour.

Not warming us up: preparation in the sense of teaching us how to see what we are about to see.

Because the witness at the centre of this hour is not a witness who fits into one of the categories we have been building.

He is the category itself.

He is what every other witness, in every other tradition, in every other generation, is measured against.

That is the takeaway of tonight.

That is what I want you to carry home.

Tonight, we walk first to the roots — the prophetic chain, the literal inheritance, the blood of every prophet’s witness flowing to the body of Imam Husayn.

Then to the branches — the synthesis of the nine nights, each one already inside him.

Then to the climax — Husayn is the furqan, the criterion of God, the standard by which every empire of every age is weighed.

Then to the fruit — receiving the criterion, applying it not only to the empires out there but to the empire in here, the inner Yazid that the nafs al-ammarah whispers to us we should comfort.

And then we pause, hand off to Safar, pledge the return — and the maqtal opens the door we have been standing at all night.

Before we begin, the anchor verse on which tonight is built.

From the Qur’an, Surah al-Fath — the Chapter of the Conquest — verse 29. God speaks of His Prophet and of the community gathered around him.

Hear what He says:

مُحَمَّدٌ رَّسُولُ اللَّهِ ۚ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ أَشِدَّاءُ عَلَى الْكُفَّارِ رُحَمَاءُ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ تَرَاهُمْ رُكَّعًا سُجَّدًا يَبْتَغُونَ فَضْلًا مِّنَ اللَّهِ وَرِضْوَانًا ۖ سِيمَاهُمْ فِي وُجُوهِهِم مِّنْ أَثَرِ السُّجُودِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مَثَلُهُمْ فِي التَّوْرَاةِ ۚ وَمَثَلُهُمْ فِي الْإِنجِيلِ كَزَرْعٍ أَخْرَجَ شَطْأَهُ فَآزَرَهُ فَاسْتَغْلَظَ فَاسْتَوَىٰ عَلَىٰ سُوقِهِ يُعْجِبُ الزُّرَّاعَ لِيَغِيظَ بِهِمُ الْكُفَّارَ

“Muhammad is the messenger of God. And those who are with him are firm of heart against those who reject the truth, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing, prostrating, seeking the favour of God and His good pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the traces of prostration. That is their description in the Torah. And their description in the Gospel is as a seed which sends forth its blade, then makes it strong; it then becomes thick, and it stands on its own stem — delighting the sowers, that He may enrage the disbelievers through them.”

This is the verse Allamah Tabataba’i, in al-Mizan, names as the structural pairing of firmness with falsehood and tenderness with the people — the pairing we took home with us last night, the pairing that runs from the Torah to the Gospel to the community of the Prophet.

But tonight I want you to hear the second half of the verse.

This is the architecture of every prophetic chain.

Every witness is a seed.

Every seed sends forth its blade.

Every blade strengthens.

And eventually — when the chain has done its work — there stands, on its own stem, a single body that is the seed, the blade, the strength, and the standing crop all at once.

That body is our beloved Imam Husayn.

That body is what we will sit with tonight.

And as we open the door — as we recite, at the start of every visitation to him, the words the tradition has placed at the threshold of his grave — let us begin with the opening of the Ziyarat al-Warith.

The Ziyarat of the heir.

The Ziyarat the believers walk to Karbala to recite at his graveside:

السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يا وارِثَ آدَمَ صَفْوَةِ اللهِ
السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يا وارِثَ نُوحٍ نَبِيِّ اللهِ
السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يا وارِثَ إِبراهيمَ خَليلِ اللهِ
السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يا وارِثَ مُوسى كَليمِ اللهِ
السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يا وارِثَ عيسى رُوحِ اللهِ
السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يا وارِثَ مُحَمَّدٍ حَبيبِ اللهِ

Peace be upon you, O heir of Adam, the chosen one of God.
Peace be upon you, O heir of Noah, the prophet of God.
Peace be upon you, O heir of Abraham, the friend of God.
Peace be upon you, O heir of Moses, the speaker with God.
Peace be upon you, O heir of Jesus, the spirit of God.
Peace be upon you, O heir of Muhammad, the beloved of God.

Six inheritances.

This Ziyarat is not poetry.

This Ziyarat is doctrine.

When the believer walks to Karbala and stands at the grave of Imam Husayn, the believer says:

The body in the grave carries, in its blood, the inheritance of every prophet of God who came before.

Not symbolically.

Literally, in the Shia theology of the Imamate, the prophetic light passes through every prophet and lands, finally, in the bodies of the Ahl al-Bayt.

And so, the body of Imam Husayn at noon on the tenth is not one man on a battlefield.

That is where we begin.

The Blood That Flows to Karbala

The first thing the Ziyarat does is name the inheritance.

Six names.

Six prophets.

Six lines of witness — each one ending, on its own, but each one handing forward what it carried.

Let me walk them with you tonight.

One by one.

Slowly.

Heir of Adam — The Chosen

The first inheritance.

السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يا وارِثَ آدَمَ صَفْوَةِ اللهِ

Peace be upon you, O heir of Adam, the chosen one of God.

What is Adam’s witness?

It is the witness of return.

Of the first soul that, after the tark-e-awla — after the abandoning of the better, when Adam took from the tree he had been counselled not to take from — turned back to God.

Adam’s witness is the witness that the cycle begins again.

That the return is always open.

That the door to repentance — al-Tawwab, one of God’s names — is the door God Himself never closes.

But before Adam’s witness was even completed in his own life, the cycle had to be enacted by his sons.

And that is where this series began, on the very first night.

Abel — the first man whose blood the earth received because he had offered to God what God accepted, while his brother offered what God refused.

The first qurban the earth ever received from human hands.

Hear the verses again, the verses we read together on the first night, from Surah al-Ma’idah:

وَاتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ ابْنَيْ آدَمَ بِالْحَقِّ إِذْ قَرَّبَا قُرْبَانًا فَتُقُبِّلَ مِنْ أَحَدِهِمَا وَلَمْ يُتَقَبَّلْ مِنَ الْآخَرِ

“Recite to them the story of the two sons of Adam, in truth. When each of them offered a sacrifice (qurban), and it was accepted from one of them and was not accepted from the other...”

And then Abel’s two sentences — the first act of witness in the history of the earth:

لَئِن بَسَطتَ إِلَيَّ يَدَكَ لِتَقْتُلَنِي مَا أَنَا بِبَاسِطٍ يَدِيَ إِلَيْكَ لِأَقْتُلَكَ ۖ إِنِّي أَخَافُ اللَّهَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ

“If you stretch out your hand to kill me, I will not stretch out my hand to kill you. I fear God, the Lord of all creation.”

Two sentences.

A refusal, and the reason for the refusal.

On the first night we returned to these words and we read them with Allamah Tabataba’i, in al-Mizan — who showed us that Abel is not the language of a frightened man hoping to avoid a fight.

He had knowledge.

إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ

“Only those endowed with knowledge truly fear God among His servants.”

And the same word the Qur’an uses there — qurban — is the word Sayyedah Zaynab will use at noon on the tenth, when she stands at the place of the body and the surface of the field is what it is, and what she names beneath the surface is qurban received by God.

Hear what kind of inheritance this is.

What Adam said with his soul — the yes he said in Surah al-A’raf, when God asked am I not your Lord? and the soul answered bala — shahidna — yes, we bear witness — Abel said with his body.

And Imam Husayn, at the door of the day we are walking toward, says it with his body at Karbala.

The first witness flows forward.

The covenant of al-A’raf becomes the offering of Abel becomes the standing of Husayn in the field.

The body of our beloved Imam is, in the language of the Ziyarat, the heir of Adam, the chosen.

He carries the first yes.

He carries the first qurban.

He carries the first witness who changed the heart of his own killer — because, as we read on the first night, the Qur’an does not stop at

فَطَوَّعَتْ لَهُ نَفْسُهُ قَتْلَ أَخِيهِ فَقَتَلَهُ فَأَصْبَحَ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
فَبَعَثَ اللَّهُ غُرَابًا يَبْحَثُ فِي الْأَرْضِ لِيُرِيَهُ كَيْفَ يُوَارِي سَوْءَةَ أَخِيهِ ۚ قَالَ يَا وَيْلَتَا أَعَجَزْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِثْلَ هَٰذَا الْغُرَابِ فَأُوَارِيَ سَوْءَةَ أَخِي ۖ فَأَصْبَحَ مِنَ النَّادِمِينَ

Then his soul prompted him to kill his brother, so he killed him, and he became of those who are lost.
Then God sent a crow, scratching at the ground, to show him how to cover the body of his brother. He said: ‘Woe to me! Am I not even able to be like this crow and cover the body of my brother?’ And he became of those who regret.

The first witness in the earth’s history changed the heart of his own killer.

That is what our beloved Imam Husayn carries, in his blood, from Abel.

The witness whose body falls and whose witness continues to work on the world that watched it fall.

The series began with the question Abel’s blood still asks.

Tonight we will ask it again at the close:

Heir of Noah — The Prophet

The second inheritance.

السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يا وارِثَ نُوحٍ نَبِيِّ اللهِ

Peace be upon you, O heir of Noah, the prophet of God.

What is Noah’s witness?

It is the witness of patience.

The patience to keep on inviting when no one is coming.

The patience to keep on building when the mockery does not stop.

The patience to stand on the call of God when the call has been refused for centuries.

The Qur’an preserves Noah’s voice.

He says — and listen carefully, because this sentence will sound exactly like the sentence Imam Husayn will live at Karbala:

رَبِّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِي لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًا فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَائِي إِلَّا فِرَارًا

“My Lord, indeed I have called my people night and day, but my call has only increased them in flight.”

— Qur’an, Surah Nuh (the Chapter of Noah) #71, Verses 5–6

Listen to that voice.

This is the voice of every witness who has stood in a square or a desert or a court or a marketplace and called toward the truth, and watched the people walk away from him.

This is the voice of Imam Husayn on the morning of the tenth, when he stood at Karbala and addressed the army that had come specifically not to hear.

The chronicles preserve his words to that army.

He stood before them — already alone, already abandoned, already without water, with the bodies of his companions falling — and he gave them counsel.

He still tried to call them back.

That is Noah’s patience.

That is Noah’s witness, inherited and completed in the body of our beloved Imam.

The patience to keep witnessing when no one is listening.

Heir of Abraham — The Friend

The third inheritance.

And this is where the language begins to weigh.

السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يا وارِثَ إِبراهيمَ خَليلِ اللهِ

Peace be upon you, O heir of Abraham, the friend of God.

What is the friend’s witness?

It is the witness of offering.

The willingness — not under coercion, but in obedience, with full awareness — to give up the dearest thing in the world.

The Qur’an preserves the conversation between Abraham and his son Ishmael.

Abraham has seen a dream.

In the dream, God has shown him that he must offer his son.

And Abraham — not in private, not with a hidden plan, but openly — turns to his son and tells him.

فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ السَّعْيَ قَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّي أَرَىٰ فِي الْمَنَامِ أَنِّي أَذْبَحُكَ فَانظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَىٰ ۚ قَالَ يَا أَبَتِ افْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِي إِن شَاءَ اللَّهُ مِنَ الصَّابِرِينَ

“And when the son reached the age of striving with him, Abraham said: ‘O my son, I have seen in a dream that I am sacrificing you. So look — what do you say?’ The son said: ‘O my father, do what you have been commanded. You will find me, by the will of God, among the patient.’”

Listen to that exchange.

The father has been asked to give the son.

The son says:

This is the moment that broke open every later witness in the prophetic chain.

The willingness to give the son, in obedience, to God.

But then the Qur’an continues.

The verses that follow are the ones that matter for tonight.

فَلَمَّا أَسْلَمَا وَتَلَّهُ لِلْجَبِينِ ۞ وَنَادَيْنَاهُ أَن يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ ۞ قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ الرُّؤْيَا ۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْمُحْسِنِينَ ۞ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ الْبَلَاءُ الْمُبِينُ ۞ وَفَدَيْنَاهُ بِذِبْحٍ عَظِيمٍ

“So when they had both submitted, and Abraham had laid his son down upon his forehead — We called to him: O Abraham, you have fulfilled the dream! Thus do We reward the doers of good. Indeed, this was a clear trial. And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.”

And here, we must stop and look very carefully.

The hand was stayed.

The angel called from heaven.

The son was spared.

What was that great sacrifice?

For centuries the commentators have asked.

Some say a ram, some a ram from paradise.

But the deeper reading — the reading our scholars have taught for fourteen centuries — is that the dhibhin azim promised at the end of the Ishmael narrative was not closed in Abraham’s lifetime.

It was a promise that would be kept later.

The son of Abraham was spared because the son of another would be — when the time came — given.

The grandson of the Prophet at noon on the tenth, would fulfil what Abraham had begun.

Hear me, very carefully. Ishmael and Imam Husayn are not the same act.

They are the same architecture, fulfilled across centuries.

For Abraham, the angel stayed the hand.

For our Imam, the angel does not come.

The companions fall — Ali al-Akbar, Qasim, Aun and Muhammad, al-Abbas, the suckling infant Ali al-Asghar in his father’s arms — every son and every nephew and every cousin falls.

The hand is not stayed.

The ransom does not arrive.

There is no ram from paradise.

Because the ransom from paradise that arrived for Ishmael is the one being offered, finally, at Karbala.

That is the inheritance of the friend.

Abraham’s witness was the willingness; our beloved Imam Husayn’s is the doing.

Abraham’s act was the preparation; Husayn’s, the fulfilment.

The promise the angel made to Abraham — We have ransomed him with a great sacrifice — was read forward in time.

The great sacrifice was Husayn.

The son of Abraham was spared because the grandson of Muhammad would not be.

This is the doctrine of the heir of Abraham, the friend of God.

Heir of Moses — The Speaker

The fourth inheritance.

السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يا وارِثَ مُوسى كَليمِ اللهِ

Peace be upon you, O heir of Moses, the one who spoke with God.

What is Moses’s witness?

It is the witness of refusal.

The staff against Pharaoh.

The refusal to bow to any throne that is not God’s throne.

The Qur’an preserves the command.

God speaks to Moses.

And He says:

اذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُ طَغَىٰ

“Go to Pharaoh — for he has indeed transgressed beyond bounds.”

— Qur’an, Surah al-Naziat (the Chapter of Those Who Drag Forth) #79, Verse 17

Two words in the Arabic.

إِنَّهُ طَغَىٰ

Indeed, he has transgressed.

This is the foundational refusal.

The refusal to acknowledge as god what is not god.

The refusal to call legitimate what is not legitimate.

The refusal to bow.

And what is the sentence Moses’s inheritance lives in, in the mouth of Imam Husayn?

It is the sentence we have already heard, on the first night and on the third night and on the seventh night and on the ninth night, of this series.

The sentence our Imam said in Medina, when Walid ibn Utba called him and demanded allegiance to Yazid.

مِثْلِي لاَ يُبَايِعُ مِثْلَهُ

“Someone like me does not give allegiance to someone like him.”

— Imam Husayn ibn Ali, to Walid ibn Utba in Medina on the night of his refusal. Preserved in Sayyid Ibn Tawus, al-Luhuf; al-Khwarizmi, Maqtal al-Husayn; Ibn al-Athir, al-Kamil fi al-Tarikh.

This sentence is the staff against Pharaoh, said in Arabic.

This sentence is the refusal Moses learned at the burning bush, said in the mouth of our beloved Imam.

This sentence is what every witness in every age, from the first man Pharaoh has ever asked to bow, has been carrying in some form or another, in some tongue or another, in some hour or another.

It is what Polycarp said at Smyrna.

It is what Jägerstätter said at Brandenburg-Görden.

It is what Aaron Bushnell shouted in front of the embassy.

It is what Imam Khamenei said in Tehran on the 17th of February 2026, eleven days before they killed him:

The chain of refusal.

Moses inherits it.

Imam Husayn completes it.

And — hear me, because we will return to this at the close of tonight — every one of us, in the chamber of our own heart, every day, is being asked to live in some small fragment of the same sentence.

Heir of Jesus — The Spirit

The fifth inheritance.

And here we must walk with the most care of all — because the witness of Jesus has been the most contested, the most layered, the most claimed-and-counter-claimed of any prophetic life in the chain.

We walk with the methodology we set down on the fifth night of our series — honour without conflation.

السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يا وارِثَ عيسى رُوحِ اللهِ

Peace be upon you, O heir of Jesus, the spirit of God.

What is the witness of Jesus?

It is two-fold.

The first half is what the Christian tradition has memorialised, and what we honoured already on the fifth night: the life laid down for the people, the body offered up so that the truth carried would not be lost.

But there is a second half, often less attended to in the popular telling — and one we must lift back into view tonight, because it wires directly into the Khutba of Mina our beloved Imam Husayn would, six centuries later, deliver to the corrupted scholars of his own community.

He resisted it openly, publicly, with words sharp enough to be remembered for two thousand years and with actions visible enough to be feared by the men of position.

Begin with his mother.

Mary — Maryam — was, as we heard already on the fifth night, al-siddiqah, the truthful one; the Qur’an names her with one of the highest stations any woman has ever attained.

But the Pharisaic establishment that surrounded the birth of Jesus accused her, in its councils and in some of its later writings, of unchastity — slander deep enough that traces of it have been preserved, in some of the later rabbinical and Pharisaic texts, for the centuries that followed.

The Qur’an itself names what was done.

وَبِكُفْرِهِمْ وَقَوْلِهِمْ عَلَىٰ مَرْيَمَ بُهْتَانًا عَظِيمًا

“And for their disbelief and for their utterance against Mary of a grievous calumny.”

— Qur’an, Surah al-Nisa (the Chapter of Women) #4, Verse 156

The Qur’an reaches for the strongest word in the lexicon of slander.

And God’s answer was the answer of God:

He did not let Mary stand alone in the face of the accusation;

He did not let the slander hang in the air.

The Qur’an, in Surah Maryam, preserves the moment.

قَالَ إِنِّي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ آتَانِيَ الْكِتَابَ وَجَعَلَنِي نَبِيًّا

“He said: ‘Indeed, I am the servant of God. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.’”

— Qur’an, Surah Maryam (the Chapter of Mary) #19, Verse 30

The infant Jesus in his mother’s arms, speaks to the people who had accused her — and his first words to the world are a defence of his mother’s honour against the slander of the corrupted establishment.

I am the servant of God.

He has given me the Scripture.

He has made me a prophet.

The witness of Jesus begins, in the Qur’an, before he can walk — and it begins as a refusal of the establishment that had slandered his mother.

Years later, when Jesus was a grown man walking the streets of Jerusalem, he came to the Temple — the same Temple that had been built and rebuilt for the worship of the One God, that the Pharisees and chief priests had, over the generations, allowed to become an open market: money changers profiting from the worship of the poor, dove-sellers turning the Lord’s house into a place of commerce.

The Gospel of Matthew preserves what the witness did.

“And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, and said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.”

He did not write a tract.

He did not lobby the priests.

He went into the place of worship and physically — bodily — overturned the architecture of corruption.

This is not the witness of the lamb led silently to slaughter; it is the witness of the prophet of God who, with his own hands, refused to let the house of God be made into a marketplace.

And then he turned to the scholars, the chief priests, the men of position and learning and respect who had presided over the corruption — and he chastised them, by name, in public, in language that has not been softened in two thousand years.

The Gospel of Matthew, chapter 23, preserves what the tradition has called the Seven Woes.

Hear a selection.

“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith...

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.”

And then — listen, because this is the verse that lifts the whole of Matthew 23 into the chain we have been walking together for nine nights — Jesus closes the Seven Woes with a sentence that names the architecture.

“That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.”

Hear what Jesus is naming.

The blood of righteous Abel — the first witness — we walked on the first night.

The blood of Zacharias — Zakariyya — we walked on the second.

Jesus himself names the chain.

Jesus himself places the corrupted clerical establishment of his own day in the lineage of those who killed Abel and those who killed Zakariyya.

And — this is what we must not miss — this is exactly what Imam Husayn will say at Mina six centuries later.

The Khutba of Mina that we walked on the fourth night was his own Woe to the scholars:

the same structure of rebuke,
the same kind of audience — scholars and religious functionaries who had made their peace with the system — and
the same transaction named: the comfortable scholar who knows the truth and stays silent,
the man of position who has purchased his safety from the oppressive ruling powers with flattery and compromise.

And hear what Imam himself was doing in the very first words of that sermon.

He opened by citing three Qur’anic verses — and the first one he reached for was Surah al-Ma’idah, verse 63:

God Himself rebuking the Rabbaniyyun and the Ahbar, the rabbinical and scholarly authorities of the Children of Israel, for failing to forbid the sinful speech and unlawful wealth they saw in their communities.

He did not begin by citing a verse against the Umayyads, or against Mu’awiya, or against Yazid — he could have.

He chose, instead, the Qur’an’s own verdict against the failed clerical class of an earlier prophetic community.

The very demographic Jesus had rebuked at the Temple six centuries earlier in the Seven Woes.

He was telling the comfortable scholars of Medina and Mecca, in the Qur’an’s own words, that they were the latter-day Ahbar — repeating the very failure the Qur’an had already named.

Jesus stood at the Temple.

Imam Husayn stood at Mina.

The same architecture.

The same diagnosis.

The same divinely inspired chastisement.

And the corrupted establishment did what corrupted establishments have always done to the witness who refuses to leave them alone.

They conspired to kill him.

But they did not do it directly — they were too clever for that, and too cowardly.

They knew what would happen if they were seen to kill him openly: the people, the Gospel tells us, took him for a prophet.

The Pharisees feared the people more than they feared God.

So they did what corrupted clerical-political establishments have done in every age since:

The Gospel of Matthew preserves the planning.

“Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him.”

And when they had taken him — by the kiss of a paid informer in the garden at night — they delivered him to the Roman governor.

“When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: and when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.”

Pontius Pilate — the Roman procurator of Judaea, the instrument of the empire of Rome, the imperial superpower of that century.

And Pilate himself, the Gospel preserves, knew exactly what was being done:

“For he knew that for envy they had delivered him...”

The Pharisaic establishment had not delivered Jesus to Rome because Rome wanted him.

Rome did not want him.

Pilate, in the Gospel’s own account, washed his hands and said —

“I am innocent of the blood of this just person; see ye to it”

The crucifixion was not Rome’s project.

The corrupted clerical-political establishment of Jerusalem manipulated the imperial superpower of its day into being the instrument of the killing it could not, by itself, perform without the people rising against it.

And the Pharisaic establishment did not stop at killing the witness — they demonised him, his mother, his disciples; they wrote their books and recorded their accusations and passed down to their successors a tradition of slander that has, in some quarters, persisted for two thousand years.

The Talmudic and later Pharisaic-tradition accounts of Jesus and of Mary include language that we, as Muslims, find unspeakable — the very calumny the Qur’an named buhtanan azima.

And the persecution did not stop at the prophet himself: the early Christian witnesses we honoured on the fifth night — Polycarp, Perpetua, Justin, and the others — were the inheritors of the same architecture of demonisation, now directed at the followers rather than the prophet himself.

The witness is killed.

The mother is slandered.

The disciples are persecuted.

The pattern is one pattern.

The Christian tradition holds that the crucifixion succeeded, and that Jesus’s witness was completed on the cross.

The Qur’an does not say this.

The Qur’an says something else.

And this is the moment of honour without conflation — where we name where the roads part.

وَقَوْلِهِمْ إِنَّا قَتَلْنَا الْمَسِيحَ عِيسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ وَمَا صَلَبُوهُ وَلَٰكِن شُبِّهَ لَهُمْ ۚ وَإِنَّ الَّذِينَ اخْتَلَفُوا فِيهِ لَفِي شَكٍّ مِّنْهُ ۚ مَا لَهُم بِهِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ إِلَّا اتِّبَاعَ الظَّنِّ ۚ وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ يَقِينًا ۞ بَل رَّفَعَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ ۚ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَزِيزًا حَكِيمًا

“And for their saying: ‘Surely we have killed the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, the messenger of God’ — and they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them so (a likeness was made to them); and most surely those who differ therein are only in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it but only follow conjecture. And certainly they did not kill him — rather, God raised him to Himself. And God is Mighty, Wise.”

Hear the verses with the weight they carry.

Six denials and one affirmation.

The Qur’an’s grammar is precise.

The killing did not happen.

God preserved His prophet.

Allamah Tabataba’i, in his commentary on these verses in al-Mizan, explains the Shia position clearly.

يَنُصُّ عَلى أنَّهُ (عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ) لَم يُتَوَفَّ بِأيدِيهِم لا صَلباً وَلا غَيرَ مَصلوبٍ، بَل شُبِّهَ لَهُم أمرُهُ فَأخَذُوا غَيرَ المَسيحِ (عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ) مَكانَ المَسيحِ فَقَتَلوهُ أو صَلَبوهُ، وَلَيسَ مِنَ البَعيدِ عادَةً، فَإنَّ القَتلَ في أمثالِ تِلكَ الاجتِماعاتِ الهَمَجِيَّةِ وَالهَجمَةِ وَالغَوغاءِ رُبَّما أخطَأ المُجرِمَ الحَقيقيَّ إلى غَيرِهِ، وَقَد قَتَلَهُ الجُندِيُّونَ مِنَ الرّومِيِّينَ، وَلَيسَ لَهُم مَعرِفَةٌ بِحالِهِ عَلى نَحوِ الكَمالِ، فَمِنَ المُمكِنِ أن يَأخُذوا مَكانَهُ غَيرَهُ، وَمَعَ ذٰلِكَ فَقَد وَرَدَت رِواياتٌ أنَّ اللهَ تَعالى ألقى شَبَهَهُ عَلى غَيرِهِ فَأُخِذَ وَقُتِلَ مَكانَهُ.

“He explicitly states that he did not die at their hands, neither by crucifixion nor by any other means.

Rather, his matter was made to appear similar to them, so they caught someone other than the Messiah, in place of the Messiah, and killed him or crucified him.

And this is not far from the natural course, for in such mob-like and tumultuous gatherings, the killing may sometimes miss the actual criminal and fall upon someone else.

And he was killed by the Roman soldiers, who had no complete knowledge of his condition; it was possible for them to take someone else in his place.

And along with this, narrations have come down that God, Most High, cast his likeness upon another, who was taken and killed in his place.”

Hear what this is — and hear what this is not.

What it is:

The testimony of the Qur’an, with the precision of one of our greatest commentators of the modern age, that Jesus was not killed. God raised him.

What it is not:

A dogmatic position on the exact mechanism.

Allamah Tabataba’i acknowledges several possibilities and does not insist on one — and tonight, neither will we.

The doctrinal core is:

Imam Husayn is not the Islamic Jesus.

The Ziyarat means something more precise.

It means that the form of witness Jesus came to embody — the two-fold form, the prophetic resistance to the corrupted clerical establishment AND the prophetic submission to the will of God in the moment of greatest cost — was, in the Islamic understanding, fulfilled in its completed form at Karbala.

In the body of a man who was, indeed, killed — because the great sacrifice the angel promised to Abraham in Surah al-Saffat was the sacrifice that would come not to the son of Abraham but to the grandson of Muhammad.

In the body of a man whose blood, indeed, fell on the earth. In the body of a man who first rebuked the scholars at Mina — as Jesus rebuked them at the Temple — and then walked into the desert to face the imperial machinery that itself wanted him dead.

And here we must say plainly — because honour without conflation requires it of us — that the architecture of our beloved Imam’s killing was not identical to Jesus’s.

In Jesus’s case, the Pharisaic establishment was the instigator; Rome, through Pilate, was the reluctant instrument.

The empire did not want Jesus dead; the corrupted clerical class did.

In our Imam’s case, the order was reversed: the Umayyad state — Yazid in his palace in Damascus — was itself the instigator; Ibn Ziyad in Kufa was Yazid’s agent, the local hand of the imperial will.

There was no Pilate figure.

And the comfortable scholars of Medina and Mecca were not the Caiaphas of his hour.

They are latter-day Pharisees in a different sense — not by active conspiracy, but by the failure of silence.

They knew the truth and stayed silent — the three silences our beloved Imam himself diagnosed at Mina:

So there is a connection between the two killings, but not a direct analogy.

What is the same — and this is what matters — is the person at the centre: refusing to bow to a system that has lost its godliness, rebuking the corrupted clerical class that should have stood, killed in the end by the machinery of the day.

That is the heir of every prophet.

What differs is the corrupted clerical class’s failure mode — in Jesus’s hour: active conspiracy; in our beloved Imam’s hour: complicit silence.

Both fail the same prophetic call; both stand condemned before God.

And the blood, despite the failure of the scholars in both ages, becomes the seed of continued witness.

And now — with the gravity that the criterion of Karbala requires of us — we must name what the architecture looks like in our own age.

The Zionist regime is the corrupted clerical-political establishment of our century, and the empire of the United States — which, unlike Pilate, does not wash its hands — is its enthusiastic Rome.

The fuller naming — by regime, by lobby, by source, by published record, the Yazid-dynasties of our hour that will fall as every architecture of arrogance has fallen, the cross-tradition truth-will-out chain that joins what the Qur’an names about the inevitability of falsehood’s collapse — waits for the Arbaeen sessions, God willing.

Nights 13 and 14 will sit with all of it at length.

Tonight we hold the architecture; the criterion of Karbala will speak the rest.

The witness who refused it then is preserved by God.

The witness who refused it at Karbala — Imam Husayn — is the criterion against whom both then and now are weighed.

And we, who claim to walk in the inheritance of Jesus and the inheritance of Imam Husayn must learn to see the architecture for what it is.

Pilate’s hands.

Caiaphas’s plotting.

The crowd that was paid to call for Barabbas.

The same shape, every time.

The same machinery, every century.

And the lesson Jesus’s witness leaves us — the inheritance Imam Husayn carries forward — is the same lesson he gave at the Temple, the same lesson he gave in the Seven Woes, the same lesson the Qur’an preserves at the close of one of its shortest and most concentrated chapters.

Surah al-Asr — the Chapter of Time.

Three verses.

Hear them.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
وَالْعَصْرِ
إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ
إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ

“In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
By Time — indeed, mankind is in loss.
Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and enjoined one another to truth and enjoined one another to patience.”

— Qur’an, Surah al-Asr (the Chapter of Time) #103

That is the diagnosis.

The default state of the human being, untethered from God, distracted by Pilate’s empire and Caiaphas’s scholarship and the moneychangers in the Temple, is loss.

And the exception is the door.

Four conditions the verse names.

The orientation toward the One God.

The negation of every false sovereign.

The affirmation of the One.

The body that has become its faith.

The life that has become its testimony.

The mutual call.

The community that refuses to let its members drift into the silence the scholars at Mina refused to break.

The endurance under the cost of the calling.

The same sabr every prophet has carried.

The same sabr Jesus carried in the Temple and in the garden.

The same sabr Imam Husayn carried at Karbala.

That is the inheritance from Jesus.

That is the way out of loss.

That is what he taught with his life and what our beloved Imam Husayn completed with his.

And the amanu — the believing, the refocus toward God — is always first.

Because every other empire in every other age is built out of the heart that lost its bearing on the One.

Every Pharisaic establishment is built out of scholars who stopped believing in God before they stopped believing in their robes.

Every Rome is built out of administrators who stopped believing in justice before they stopped believing in their treaties.

The witness restores the bearing.

That is the work of Jesus.

That is the work of our beloved Imam Husayn.

That is the work the criterion places in our hands tonight.

And so, again —

السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يا وارِثَ عيسى رُوحِ اللهِ

Peace be upon you, O heir of Jesus, the spirit of God.

What the Christian tradition has gathered around Jesus — the love, the longing, the recognition of the witness who gives up everything for the truth, and who refuses to let the corrupted establishment have the last word —

Not the same act.

Not the same theology.

But the same architecture — and the architecture that arrived, at Karbala, in the form God had decreed it should arrive.

This is what honour without conflation asks of us.

We name what we share.

We name where the roads part.

We do not flatten one tradition into another.

And we do not deny what is real in the other tradition.

Polycarp, Perpetua, Justin before Rusticus and all those we have spoken of.

Every one of these is a witness honoured by us, by name, with intellectual seriousness, with the recognition that the Spirit moves where it wills.

But what arrived, at Karbala, in the body of our Imam — is the form the prophetic chain was, all along, aimed at.

Not the replacement.

Not the rejection.

Not the borrowing.

The heir.

Heir of Muhammad — The Beloved

The sixth inheritance.

And the chain closes.

السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يا وارِثَ مُحَمَّدٍ حَبيبِ اللهِ

Peace be upon you, O heir of Muhammad, the beloved of God.

What is the witness of the Prophet?

The witness of completion.

The witness that the chain that began with Adam, that ran through every prophet of God, has — in his body and his message — arrived at its final form.

And what he hands forward — to whom does he hand it?

And here, with the most precision we have, we must clarify something essential — because the answer is not what the outside reader of Shia Islam often takes it to be.

In the Shia theology of the Imamate, the Prophet hands forward what God has placed in his keeping — not by inheritance, not by dynasty, not by bloodline — but by nass, explicit divine designation.

The Imamate is covenant, not crown.

— that line is the refusal of the hereditary monarchy Mu’awiya had constructed; it is the refusal of the very kingship-by-bloodline that the Imamate is not.

The full doctrine of nass — its grounding in Surah al-Baqarah 2:124, ismah as the hidden inner state only God can identify — we have walked at length in the Lantern of the Path series, in [24] Imamah (Leadership) — The Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali, under the subsection Essential Qualifications of the Imam.

Tonight, hold the essential form.

Our beloved Imam Husayn carries the nass into the field of Karbala — not the dynastic claim, not the hereditary throne, but the divine designation transmitted to him by his father from the Prophet at Ghadir Khumm.

The Umayyads passed a crown to a son.

The Prophet passed a divine designation to the soul God had prepared to bear it.

The body fell at noon on the tenth.

The nass did not.

It passed to Imam Sajjad that very afternoon — to the young man chained in the captives’ caravan — and from him forward, generation by generation, by the same divine designation, until the chain reaches the Hidden Imam of our Age.

And the Prophet said about Imam Husayn — the hadith narrated through both Sunni and Shia chains:

حُسَيْنٌ مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْ حُسَيْنٍ

“Husayn is from me, and I am from Husayn.”

— The Prophet Muhammad. Narrated through multiple Sunni and Shia chains, including: Tirmidhi #3775; al-Hakim al-Naysaburi, al-Mustadrak 3.177; Ibn Maja #144; Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal 4.172; al-Saduq, al-Amali; Bihar al-Anwar vol. 43.

Hear what kind of sentence this is.

That is what every grandfather might say of his grandson.

That is the natural sentence of inheritance.

That is the impossible sentence.

That is the sentence that breaks open the architecture of every other inheritance.

The Prophet is not saying he descends biologically from his grandson.

He is saying that his prophetic mission — his witness, his work, his very identity as the seal of the prophets — is carried forward in the body of his grandson, in such a way that without that grandson’s witness, the Prophet’s own would be incomplete.

This is the sixth inheritance.

The Prophet is, in a sense the Shia tradition has held for fourteen centuries, completed by what our beloved Imam will do at Karbala.

And so the body that walks into the field at dawn on the tenth carries — in its blood, in its bones, in its breath — the witness of every prophet of God who came before.

Six inheritances.

One body.

One day.

One field.

This is the doctrine of the heir.

The blood that flows to Karbala is not a metaphor.

It is the literal arrival of the prophetic chain at its destination.

This is the doctrine of the roots.

And now — having received the roots — we turn to the branches.

The Synthesis of the Nine Nights

Across these nine nights we walked — from Abel and the recovery of the word, through the prophetic chain, Shaheed Mutahhari's five kinds of death, the Khutba of Mina, the Christian witness, the wretched and the witness, the anti-colonial cadence, the aesthetic emptied of truth, and the four counterfeits of the false shahada.

We walked the Soleimani Thread from quest to love to gnostic seeing to shahada at Baghdad airport.

Nine branches.

One trunk.

One root.

And now — the trunk speaks.

Husayn Is the Furqan

And here, at the synthesis of all nine nights, the imperial counterfeit thread that began as a seed on the eighth night, and was named as the fourth counterfeit last night, reaches its theological crescendo.

The furqan, in our Qur’an, is the criterion — the discriminator, the standard by which truth is separated from falsehood.

God says, in Surah al-Furqan — the chapter named after this word — verse one:

تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي نَزَّلَ الْفُرْقَانَ عَلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ لِيَكُونَ لِلْعَالَمِينَ نَذِيرًا

“Blessed is He who sent down the criterion upon His servant, that he may be a warner to all the worlds.”

— Qur’an, Surah al-Furqan (the Chapter of the Criterion) #25, Verse 1

And again, in Surah al-Anbiya, of Moses and Aaron, He says:

وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَهَارُونَ الْفُرْقَانَ وَضِيَاءً وَذِكْرًا لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

“And We gave Moses and Aaron the criterion, and a light, and a reminder for the God-fearing.”

The Qur’an is criterion.

The Torah is criterion.

And tonight, we add a third form to the same word: the criterion is also a person.

The person is Imam Husayn.

Hear me carefully now.

Read with the weight the line carries: every empire that has ever called its mass killing necessary, justified, beautiful, or holy — is weighed against Imam Husayn, and found wanting.

Yazid’s empire claimed legitimacy from the Prophet’s family while slaughtering the Prophet’s family.

Caesar’s empire claimed Pax Romana while crucifying the prophets.

The British empire claimed civilisation while bleeding India and the world.

The American empire claims democracy while bombing civilians from Hiroshima to Gaza.

The Zionist regime claims biblical right while invoking Amalek over children and committing unspeakable crimes with impunity.

The cherry blossom on the wing of the kamikaze cockpit.

The mushroom cloud over Hiroshima.

The bunker-buster over a Gaza hospital.

The white phosphorus over a Lebanese village.

The drone over Baghdad airport.

All of them fall under the same weighing.

The criterion does not change.

Karbala is the criterion under which every empire has stood, and every empire has fallen.

Imam Husayn is not one figure in history — he is the permanent measure.

And we must say this in the right voice.

We do not soften this to be liked;

We do not whisper it because someone might be uncomfortable;

We name it because it is true.

And we name it in the same breath we name something else.

Because the witness against the regimes IS the witness for the peoples.

The Western mother who lost her son to the meaningless wars of choice — the Iraqs, the Afghanistans, the Libyas, the Syrias — that NATO and the empire have dressed up as necessary, is honoured by this criterion.

The Jewish family whose conscience refuses what is done in their name is honoured by this criterion.

The Christian child raised in fear under a regime that has lost its godliness is honoured by this criterion.

The Palestinian child carried out of Gaza in a body bag is honoured by this criterion.

The Yemeni child whose food was the food the empire bombed;
the Afghan mother whose daughter the empire pretended for twenty years to liberate;
the Iraqi grandfather whose city the empire reduced to rubble;
the Lebanese family whose home the empire’s weapons set on fire;
the Iranian father whose country the empire has sanctioned and tried to break for half a century;
the African neighbour whose lands the empire has destabilised so its resources could be extracted

— every one of them is honoured by this criterion.

The protester in London charged as a “terrorist” for standing in direct action against the weapons-makers;
the journalist silenced for naming what is happening;
the citizen of conscience whose speech the empire has criminalised — while those who design the bombs and sign the cheques sit decorated, protected, and applauded by the very system that calls their conscience criminal

— is honoured by this criterion.

And here is the methodological lock we take from tonight forward into the Arbaeen sessions and into the rest of our lives.

Netanyahu, Trump, Starmer, Modi — whichever name the news has placed in front of us this morning — they are not the disease.

They are the symptoms.

They are what an unchecked self becomes when given an empire.

To name the leader as the problem is to suggest the problem would resolve if the leader went — it would not; the system would — and has many times — install another.

And it is to collapse the structural critique back into personality, which is precisely the opposite of what the criterion does.

The criterion weighs the system.

And — as we will hear in a moment — the criterion also weighs the self that produces both the system and the leader.

Never the man at the head alone.

This is what our beloved Imam Husayn does, at noon on the tenth, when he refuses to give allegiance not just to Yazid but to the entire architecture of imperial legitimation that Yazid is just the current face of.

That is the furqan.

That is the criterion.

That is what tonight has been building you to receive.

The Criterion Weighs the Self

And now — to the heart of tonight.

We have built the criterion.

Tonight is the climactic clarification of the entire Muharram arc:

Having walked nine nights to learn how to weigh — and having received tonight what we weigh against — the criterion is now in our hands.

The Three Tests from last night — loyalty to God, consistency with God’s law, full consciousness of why — are the working tools.

Imam Husayn is the standard the tools are calibrated against.

We will not call any death shahada that does not stand the test of our beloved Imam.

We will not bless any system that calls itself sacred while doing what Imam refused to do.

But — and here we do something that must be said before we close, because without it everything we have learned tonight remains theoretical —

The Qur’an, in Surah Yusuf, in the mouth of the Prophet Joseph, teaches us the principle:

إِنَّ النَّفْسَ لَأَمَّارَةٌ بِالسُّوءِ إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّي ۚ إِنَّ رَبِّي غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

“Indeed, the soul is ever commanding evil, except for that on which my Lord has mercy. My Lord is forgiving, merciful.”

— Qur’an, Surah Yusuf (the Chapter of Joseph) #12, Verse 53

This is the verse.

The nafs al-ammarah — the soul that commands evil.

The Prophet Joseph is not confessing his own sin in this verse.

He is teaching us about the soul every human carries.

And the exception clause — illa ma rahima Rabbi, except for that on which my Lord has mercy — is the door.

The mercy of God is what lifts the soul out of its commanding pattern.

The Inner Empires Named

So hear me.

The criterion weighs the empires out there — Yazid’s, Caesar’s, the British, the American, the Zionist.

That is the work we have just done.

But the criterion weighs, also, the inner empires.

We carry in us, every one of us, the inner Yazid.

We carry in us the inner Pharaoh.

We carry in us the inner Caesar.

The name is different for each age; the disease is the same.

We carry in us the inner unchecked-self that, when given power — even small power, even private power, even the power of a household, even the power of the chamber of our own mind — becomes what we have just spent the last few minutes naming in the empires of the world.

And the leaders of our age — Trump, Netanyahu, Starmer, Modi, every other name the news asks us to memorise this morning and forget by next month — they are not the disease.

They are what an unchecked self becomes when it has been handed an empire.

If we want to refuse the empires, the work begins in here.

In the chamber of our own heart.

Every prayer, every day.

Someone Like Us

And here is the structural seed of this work — already named in the maqtal on the first night of our series, already named in this sermon a few minutes ago in the section on Moses.

In Medina, on the night Walid ibn Utba called him at midnight and demanded allegiance to Yazid, our beloved Imam answered with one sentence the chronicles have preserved for thirteen and a half centuries.

“Someone like me does not give allegiance to someone like him.”

— Imam Husayn ibn Ali, to Walid ibn Utba in Medina.

And Imam Khamenei eleven days before they killed him in February of this year, said the same sentence in Tehran.

“Someone like me does not give allegiance to someone like him.”

— Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei, Power, Dignity, and the Unbreakable Nation, final televised address, 17 February 2026 (eleven days before his martyrdom on 28 February 2026 / 8 Ramadhan 1447).

The chain of refusal.

Across more than thirteen and a half centuries.

Same sentence.

Same architecture.

Same God.

And so — we, who claim to be lovers of Imam Husayn — we, who claim to walk in the chain that includes Imam Khamenei and every other witness whose body has paid the price of refusing to bow — must ensure that someone like us can never give allegiance to our inner Yazid.

To our inner Pharaoh.

To our inner Caesar.

To the base desires that lead us away from God.

To the whisperings of Satan, who counsels us — every hour of every day — that the small compromise will not matter, that the small theft is too small to notice, that the small lie is too small to repent of.

The same refusal we honour outwardly in our beloved Imam must be the refusal we make daily inwardly in ourselves.

Someone like Husayn can not give allegiance to someone like Yazid.

Someone like Imam Khamenei can not give allegiance to someone like the Americans and the Zionists.

And someone like us — we who claim to love these witnesses, we who weep for them every Muharram, we who walk to Arbaeen — someone like us cannot, must not, will not give allegiance to the inner Yazid the nafs whispers we should comfort.

To love Imam Husayn is to refuse what he refused.

And the first place we refuse — the very first place — is the chamber that Imam Ali called the trench of the self.

The Daily Refusal — La ilaha illa Allah

And now I want to put in your hands the weapon — the daily weapon, the one God Himself has placed in the prayer of every believer — by which the refusal we have just spoken of is practised, sustained, and made into the very fabric of who we are.

The testimony we make in every prayer.

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّه

“There is no god, except God.”

Look at the shape of the sentence.

It begins with a negation —

— and only then comes the affirmation:

The believer first negates — completely, absolutely, without remainder — every false god that might claim a throne in the human heart, and only after the negation is complete does the believer affirm the One God.

Negation before affirmation.

Refusal before allegiance.

The clearing of the chamber before the Throne is named.

And the false gods this testimony negates are not only the carved idols of the Quraysh that the Prophet Muhammad’s grandfather refused to bow to in Mecca.

The inner Yazid.

The inner Pharaoh.

The inner Caesar.

The base desires of the nafs that the Qur’an, in Surah Yusuf, told us commands evil.

The whispers of Satan that counsel the small compromise.

The wealth-as-god of the Khawas of Kufa — and
the comfort-as-god, the position-as-god,
the safety-as-god, the career-as-god,
the family-as-god when family is loved more than the truth that loves the family,
the tribe-as-god, the flag-as-god,
the leader-as-god,
the system-as-god.

Every one of these is an ilah — a god — that claims the chamber of the believer’s heart for itself.

And every time we say La ilaha illa Allah in the prayer — between fifteen and eighteen times in each individual obligatory prayer, and more in the supererogatory — we are not making a polite declaration.

We are performing an act of negation.

We are emptying the chamber.

We are refusing every false sovereign and clearing the seat for the One.

And here is what the daily repetition does.

Du’a al-Nudbah — the Supplication of Lamentation, which we recite every Friday in longing for the return of the Hidden Imam, preserves a sentence the Prophet said to Imam Ali.

The sentence describes what faith does in the bodies of those who carry it fully:

وَالْإِيْمَانُ مُخَالِطٌ لَحْمَكَ وَدَمَكَ كَمَا خَالَطَ لَحْمِي وَدَمِي

“And faith is mingled with your flesh and blood, just as it is mingled with my flesh and blood.”

The Prophet told the Commander of the Faithful — and through him, told us — that the faith of those who carry it fully is not a coat they put on, not an opinion they hold, not a doctrine they assent to.

It is something in the flesh, in the blood — something the body itself has become.

And here is what we must hear tonight — and we must hear it carefully, because the popular reading misreads the doctrine, and the misreading flattens what the doctrine is actually doing.

In the case of the Prophet and the Imams of guidance, this faith-mingled-with-flesh-and-blood is intrinsic.

It is given.

It is the doctrine the Hawza tradition has called ismah — what the Qur’an itself testifies to in the Verse of Purification:

إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ لِيُذۡهِبَ عَنكُمُ ٱلرِّجۡسَ أَهۡلَ ٱلۡبَيۡتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمۡ تَطۡهِيرٗا

Indeed God desires to repel all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and purify you with a thorough purification.

— Qur’an, Surah al-Ahzab (the Chapter of the Confederates) #33, Verse 33

Ismah — infallibility — is not the suspension of free will, not a metaphysical inability to sin, not a different kind of being incapable of choice.

If that were what it meant, the Ma’sumin — the infallible — would deserve no praise for their obedience, and the rest of us no censure for our failure — ismah would collapse the moral economy of the universe.

Ismah — as the Hawza tradition has carried it from Shaykh al-Mufid through Allamah al-Hilli, through Allamah Tabataba’i, into the teaching of Ayatollah Jawadi-Amoli today — is lutf, divine grace.

The grace that places into the heart of the Ma’sum such an abundance of the knowledge of God and intensity of love for God that — though they retain the full capacity to sin — the desire to sin has no weight.

The fire of their love is so total that the candles the nafs would offer cannot pull them.

The fuller exposition — Shaykh al-Saduq’s verbatim teaching that the Ma’sum is capable of sin but does not commit it;

Allamah Tabataba’i’s precise architecture that ismah is the perfection of the will through certain knowledge rather than its bypassing; and the pastoral payoff that the Ma’sumin are not a different species of being but the perfected end of the very road the believer is invited to walk — comes, God willing, when we walk together after Arbaeen, with the chain of witness that runs from Sayyedah Zaynab forward into the long ghaybah.

Night Eleven will sit with this doctrine in its fullness.

Tonight, hold the doctrine in its essential form:

But in our case — in the case of every believer who is not infallible, who carries the inner Yazid, who knows the nafs commands evil — this faith-mingled-with-flesh-and-blood is something we cultivate, something we practise into, something we say into ourselves around sixty-five times across the five daily obligatory prayers, until what began as words on the tongue becomes substance in the bones.

La ilaha illa Allah, said once, is a declaration.

La ilaha illa Allah, said sixty-five times a day for sixty years, is a body that has become its testimony.

This is jihad al-akbar in its daily practical form — how the believer who is not infallible builds, slowly, the body that can refuse what our beloved Imam Husayn refused; how someone like us learns, prayer by prayer, to say to the inner Yazid the same sentence our Imam said in Medina:

By the time our test comes — and it will come, perhaps in great ways but more often in the small daily ways that Imam Ali warned us about — the question will not be whether we choose to refuse.

The question will be whether the body we have built, prayer by prayer, can do anything else.

This is the chain that runs from the morning prayer in Medina, through the prayer in the midst of arrows our beloved Imam Husayn would offer at Karbala — the prayer Sa’id al-Hanafi shielded with his body, the prayer that ended in the last sajdah — through every Du’a al-Nudbah we have wept on a Friday morning longing for the Imam of our Age, to the prayer we will make tonight, after this sermon, before we sleep.

Every La ilaha illa Allah is a refusal.

Every prayer is a small jihad al-akbar.

Every Friday’s Du’a al-Nudbah is the renewal of the covenant the soul made at al-A’raf, when God asked am I not your Lord? and the soul answered bala — shahidna — yes, we bear witness.

The faith mingles into the flesh through the saying.

The body becomes the testimony through the repeating.

And someone like us, by the mercy of God, becomes the kind of believer who — when the moment comes, small or great — can answer with the sentence that has been mingled into our blood for a lifetime.

All My Deeds, One Devotion

And the negation — la ilaha — clears the chamber.

But the chamber, once cleared, must be inhabited.

The testimony does not end at the negation.

It moves to the affirmation.

And the affirmation — illa Allah — is not the affirmation of a doctrine.

It is the affirmation of a sovereignty that, once accepted in the heart, asks for everything.

Tonight, on the eve of the tenth, I want to hand you the verse that names what the heart is being asked for.

It is the prayer of the Prophet Abraham — the same Abraham whose inheritance our beloved Imam Husayn carries on the day of Ashura.

The Qur’an, in Surah al-An’am — the Chapter of the Cattle — preserves what the Prophet was commanded to declare as the inheritance of Abraham:

قُلْ إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ۞ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ ۖ وَبِذَٰلِكَ أُمِرْتُ وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

“Say: Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for God, Lord of the worlds. No partner has He. And this I have been commanded — and I am the first of those who submit.”

— Qur’an, Surah al-An’am (the Chapter of the Cattle) #6, Verses 162–163

Hear what kind of declaration this is.

My prayer — that is the easy part.

Of course my prayer is for God.

The believer says La ilaha illa Allah — there is no god, except God — and bows in prayer and the prayer is for God.

My rites of sacrifice — nusuki — the qurban (sacrifice) I offer, the hajj I walk, the offerings I bring.

Also for God.

Also the easy part.

The forms of worship are obviously for the One who set the forms.

But then the verse does something the believer must sit with.

It refuses to stop at the forms.

Mahyaya — my living.

Every breath, every meal, every conversation.

Every minute at the desk, every step on the road.

Every laugh and every sigh.

Every word said to a child.

Every coin counted.

Every choice made when no one is watching.

All of it — for God, Lord of the worlds.

Mamati — my dying.

Not only the moment of my death.

The whole arc of my mortality.

The fact that I am a creature who will end.

The whole shape of my finitude.

For God, Lord of the worlds.

And the verse closes — la sharika lah.

No partner.

Not even a small partner.

Not even the partner we have been training ourselves to deny in the la ilaha of the daily testimony.

The whole life, the whole death, the whole orientation — without a single competing throne in any chamber of any hour.

This is the Abrahamic prayer.

This is what our beloved Imam Husayn inherited from his forefather Abraham and carried into the field of Karbala.

When he prayed his last two raka’at — units — in the midst of arrows, and when he performed his last sajdah saying

— this is the verse the body was finally inhabiting.

The whole arc of his existence had become the verse he had been carrying in his mouth since Medina.

That is the witness of the heir of Abraham.

And here is what Imam Ali, taught us about how a believer who is not infallible reaches toward that orientation.

Du’a Kumayl — the supplication Imam Ali taught to his companion Kumayl ibn Ziyad al-Nakha’i, which the Shia have recited on Thursday nights for fourteen centuries — preserves a sentence that is the believer’s aspirational answer to Surah al-An’am, verse 162.

حَتَّى تَكُونَ أَعْمَالِي وَأَوْرَادِي كُلُّهَا وِرْداً وَاحِداً، وَحَالِي فِي خِدْمَتِكَ سَرْمَداً

“...so that my deeds and my devotional practices may all become a single, unified devotion, and my state in Your service everlasting.”

Look at what Imam Ali is asking for, on our behalf, every Thursday night when we recite this du’a.

A’mali — my deeds.

The mundane, the everyday — the making of a cup of tea, the walking to work, the standing in the supermarket queue.

Awradi — my devotions.

The salat, the dhikr, the recitation, the fasts, the pilgrimages.

And Imam Ali asks God to make these two things — the mundane and the sacred — into one.

Wirdan wahidan.

A single, unified devotion.

The believer who is given this — by God’s mercy — is the believer for whom the line between the everyday and the worshipful has been dissolved.

Whose work, whose cup of tea, whose conversation with a stranger at the bus stop, whose sleep, whose laughter, whose tears — each is a wird, a devotion.

And then — sarmadan — perpetual, continuous, unceasing, like a river that does not stop.

This is what Du’a Kumayl asks.

This is what Surah al-An’am 162 declares.

This is what Abraham inherited into the chain that lands at Karbala.

This is what Imam Husayn carried in his prayer at noon on the tenth.

And this is what someone like us, by the slow work of jihad al-akbar — prayer by prayer, Thursday night by Thursday night, Friday morning by Friday morning — is being shaped toward.

Four practices we hold tonight — and a fifth that closes the cycle when we walk together to mark the fortieth.

Five times a day — the obligatory prayer — we say La ilaha illa Allah, and the testimony is mingled into our flesh and blood.

Every morning — Du’a al-‘Ahd — we renew, with God and with our Awaited Imam, the very first covenant the soul made at al-A’raf when God asked am I not your Lord? and we answered yes, we bear witness.

Every Thursday night — Du’a Kumayl — we ask, with the words of Imam Ali, that our deeds and our devotions may become one continuous orientation.

Every Friday — Du’a al-Nudbah — we weep for the absence of the Hidden Imam and receive into our hearts the mukhalata line about faith mingling with flesh and blood.

And every Arbaeen — Ziyarat Arbaeen — the dedicated visitation text on the fortieth morning, when the chain of witness from Karbala to today reaches its annual seal.

Night Fifteen, God willing, will sit with these supplications in full, on the eve of the walking.

Daily.

Weekly.

Across the cycle of the year.

By these — set within the broader science of self-building, akhlaq, and tazkiyat al-nafs that our tradition has carried across the centuries — does someone like us, who is not infallible, slowly become the kind of believer whose life and death are for God, Lord of the worlds, without a partner, without remainder, without compromise.

This is the practical jihad al-akbar.

This is how the inner Yazid is defeated — not in one heroic moment, but in tens of thousands of small daily ones, repeated over decades, until the body has become its testimony.

Until what was once words on the tongue is, by the mercy of God, substance in the bones.

The Prophetic Teaching on the Greater Jihad

And the Prophet named this work as long ago as the early years of the Islamic call.

The famous narration.

When the Prophet welcomed back his soldiers from a military campaign, he turned to them and said:

رَجَعْنا مِنَ الجِهادِ الأَصْغَرِ إِلَى الجِهادِ الأَكْبَرِ

“We have returned from the lesser jihad to the greater jihad.”

His companions, surprised, asked him what the greater jihad was. He said:

جِهادُ النَّفْسِ

“The struggle of a person against his own nafs.”

— Prophet Muhammad. Preserved in Shaykh al-Saduq’s al-Amali; Bihar al-Anwar vols. 19 and 70; Ma’ani al-Akhbar and al-Khasal of al-Saduq.

The lesser jihad — al-jihad al-asghar — is the outer struggle: the defence of life, family, community, the ummah, against the aggression that comes from outside.

The greater jihad — al-jihad al-akbar — is the inner struggle, the struggle of a person against his own nafs — against his own self.

The Prophet’s order is important.

He does not say the outer jihad is unimportant — he calls it asghar, lesser.

And the inner he calls akbar, greater.

Why?

Because the outer jihad can be performed by a person whose inner jihad has collapsed — and when that happens, the outer jihad does not bring forth what God intends to bring forth from it.

It brings forth, instead, the very evil it was supposed to oppose.

A person who fights the outer Yazid without first having fought the inner Yazid will, sooner or later, become some version of what he was fighting against.

The revolution he wins will install, on the throne his enemy held, the throne his own nafs had been wanting to sit on.

The Prophet knew this fourteen centuries before any revolution of the modern world demonstrated it again.

The inner jihad is the foundation; without it, the outer cannot stand.

Imam Khomeini on Jihad al-Akbar

Imam Khomeini — the leader of the Islamic Revolution and founder of the Islamic Republic, the man whose pen broke the Pahlavi throne and whose lectures from Najaf became the spiritual foundation of a movement — wrote one of his earliest and most beloved works on this very theme.

Compiled from his lectures to the seminarians at Najaf in the late 1960s and early 1970s, in the years he was building, in the shadow of one empire, what would become the rejection of every empire.

What did he teach the seminarians?

He taught them that the political work they would carry — the work of refusing the Shah, of preparing the Revolution, of building the Islamic Republic — was built upon, and could not exist without, the inner work.

The seminarians who would carry the outer struggle of the Revolution could not do so unless they had first carried the inner struggle of their own selves.

And the warning he gave them — and that we must hear tonight — is severe.

That is my reading of Imam Khomeini’s framework — the structural argument of his treatise, paraphrased rather than verbatim.

The exact verbatim of the lectures sits in Jihad al-Akbar in any edition the believer wishes to read.

The structural argument is this: the inner jihad is the precondition of the outer.

And the believer who would refuse the empires of the world must first refuse the empires of the heart.

Imam Khamenei — Ashura as the Perfect Manifestation

And Imam Khamenei returned to this theme across almost forty years of leadership.

One statement of his — repeated in many forms before every Muharram, foundational to his annual address theme to the eulogists and the public — captures it cleanly.

Hear what he taught us about Ashura itself:

عاشورا مظهر کامل جهاد با نفس و جهاد با دشمن است. آن کسانی که در کربلا با حسین بن علی (علیه‌السلام) ماندند و آن حماسه را آفریدند، پیش از مقابله با شمشیرهای دشمن، بر نفس خود، بر ترس خود، و بر دلبستگی‌های دنیوی خود پیروز شدند. آن‌ها جهاد اکبر را به کمال رساندند که توانستند در جهاد اصغر، آن‌گونه بی‌نظیر بایستند.

“Ashura is the perfect manifestation of both the jihad against the self — the inner jihad — and the jihad against the enemy. Those who stayed with Husayn ibn Ali, in Karbala and created that epic had, prior to facing the swords of the enemy, already conquered their own selves, their fears, and their worldly attachments. They brought the Greater Jihad to its perfection, which is precisely why they were able to stand so unparalleled in the Lesser Jihad.”

Hear what this teaches.

The seventy-two who stood with our beloved Imam Husayn at Karbala — Habib ibn Muzahir, Burayr ibn Khudayr, Zuhayr ibn al-Qayn, Sa’id ibn Abdullah al-Hanafi, Muslim ibn Awsajah, and all the others — these were not men who happened, by some accident of geography or coincidence of biography, to find themselves in the right place at the right moment.

They were men who had already won the inner jihad, in the years and the decades that preceded Karbala.

By the night of Ashura, the bodies they brought to the field were bodies that could not have done otherwise.

The greater jihad had been won, prayer by prayer, refusal by refusal, in the long quiet years before anyone knew what those bodies were being prepared for.

And when the day came — when the moment of the lesser jihad arrived — there was nothing left in them to compromise with.

This is what makes them the lamps that would not flicker.

This is the perfect manifestation of both jihads — the jihad against the self perfected over a lifetime, the jihad against the enemy completed in a single hour.

The Theology Walked — When the Greater Jihad Took Flesh

And every theology must, at some point, answer one question:

The Hawza tradition we have just walked through — from the Prophet, through Imam Ali, through Imam Khomeini in Najaf, through Imam Khamenei in Tehran — gave us the doctrine, the architecture, the diagnostic.

The theology written in the Hawza walked in the flesh of the Resistance.

It was the sleepless eyes of Hajj Qasem Soleimani — the Commander of the Hearts, the man whose name the Americans needed a drone strike to silence at Baghdad airport in January of 2020.

It was the twenty-five-year silence of Hajj Imad Mughniyeh — who did the work without his name on it, without his image on it, until even the most sophisticated intelligence apparatus in the world could not see him, because there was no “I” left to be seen.

It was Sayyed Abbas al-Musawi, refusing the palaces of the comfortable — climbing into the pulpit instead, anchoring himself in Imam Ali’s letter to his governor in Basra, fourteen centuries before, and refusing the leaders of his own day who had forgotten that letter.

It was Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, winning the battle in the mihrab of the night prayer before he ever won it in the trench of Tammuz — teaching, across forty years of weekly addresses, that the victory of two thousand and six had nothing to do with the abundance of weapons.

It was Shaykh Naim Qassem, naming the Resistance itself as spiritual discipline.

Five lives.

One architecture.

The same theology Imam Khomeini wrote in Najaf and Imam Khamenei explained in Tehran — walked in the flesh of those who carried the body Sayyedah Fatimah al-Zahra, handed forward into history.

And of those who walked it — hear one sentence.

It was written by Hajj Qasem to his daughter Fatimah, in the years he was awake.

يا ابنتي أنا تعبان جدا. لم أنم منذ ثلاثين عامًا، لكني لا أريد أن أنام بعد الآن أيضا. أذرّ الملح في عيني حتى لا يجرؤ جفني أن يطبق كي لا يقطع رأس ذاك الطفل العاجز في غفلتي.

“O my daughter, I am so tired. I have not slept for thirty years — but I do not wish to sleep any longer either. I sprinkle salt in my eyes so that my eyelid dares not close — lest that helpless child’s head be cut off in my negligence.”

This is what jihad al-akbar looked like in the body of one of the great commanders of our age.

Not asceticism for its own sake — asceticism so that the heart could be free enough to weep, and the body alert enough to act, when a single child in Aleppo, Mosul or elsewhere needed someone awake on her behalf.

The seventy-two who stood with our beloved Imam Husayn at Karbala won the inner jihad.

The Resistance Leaders of our own age won the inner jihad in their generation.

The fuller telling waits — across the Arbaeen sessions, God willing.

Tonight, hold the architecture: the theology took flesh in our own age.

But every theology that walks must also reckon with its shadow.

The Warnings of Ashura — How the Khawas (Elites) Failed

And there is a shadow to this teaching — the companion to it, the one Imam Khamenei gave us in his most uncomfortable lecture on Ashura: the Ebrat-haye Ashura, the Warnings of Ashura, delivered to the commanders and veterans of the 27th Mohammad Rasulullah Division on 10 June 1996.

The seventy-two won the inner jihad — that is why they could stand.

But the Khawas of Kufa — the elites, the notables, the men of position and learning who had once written letters of allegiance to our beloved Imam — lost the inner jihad.

And the diagnostic of their failure is the most uncomfortable warning Imam Khamenei ever delivered about Ashura.

اگر خواصِ طرفدارِ حق، جانشان را، راحتشان را، مقامشان را، فرزندانشان را، پولشان را، بیشتر از حفظ حق بشناسند و دوست بدارند... در وقت خطر، در وقت امتحان، در وقت جهاد اکبر و جهاد اصغر، از خود ضعف نشان دهند... آن وقت واقعه‌ی عاشورا به وجود می‌آید و حسین‌بن‌علی‌ها به مسلخ می‌روند.

“If the elites who support the truth value and love their lives, their comfort, their positions, their children, and their wealth more than the preservation of the truth... if in the moment of danger, in the moment of the test, in the moment of the Greater Jihad and the Lesser Jihad, they show weakness... then the event of Ashura occurs, and the Husayn ibn Alis are sent to the slaughterhouse.”

Hear what kind of sentence this is.

The killing of Imam Husayn at Karbala was not done only by the swords of Ibn Sa’d’s army — it was done also by the slow, daily, almost invisible weakening of the people of Kufa who had once written the eighteen thousand letters of allegiance.

They had not become enemies; they had merely become tired, comfortable, valuing their wealth and position and their children’s safety a little too much — more than they valued the truth.

And by the time the test came, there was nothing left in them to refuse with.

The eighteen thousand letters from Kufa were written by the very same people who, eight weeks later, stood in Ibn Sa’d’s army or sat in the back streets of Kufa with their doors locked.

The same people.

Not different people.

The same hearts that had said yes had — without the people noticing — already lost the strength to keep saying yes when saying yes cost something.

And Imam Ali named the diagnostic principle centuries before Imam Khamenei did.

أَشَدُّ الذُّنُوبِ مَا اسْتَهَانَ بِهِ صَاحِبُهُ

“The greatest sin is the one the doer considers small.”

The Khawas of Kufa did not see their love-of-wealth, their love-of-comfort, their love-of-position, their love-of-safety-for-their-children as great sins.

They saw these as — at most — small compromises.

The small concession to wealth.

The small holding-back from the dangerous truth.

The small turning of the face from the man in the desert.

But Imam Ali had already named what these were.

The sin treated as small is the sin that does its worst work — because it is never resisted, never repented, never carried to God.

It accumulates.

It hardens.

It becomes the soil out of which a great sin grows.

And when the great moment comes — the moment of Ashura, the moment when truth needs us to refuse with our whole self — the soil that has been built out of small compromises will not hold.

And so — when we ask ourselves tonight what jihad al-akbar looks like in our own lives — the first place we look is at the sin we have been treating as small.

That one — the one we have been telling ourselves does not matter — is the one we must, by the criterion of our beloved Imam Husayn and the diagnostic of Imam Ali, treat as the greatest.

Because that is precisely what it is.

Imam Ali also taught us about the station that follows.

The sin that grieves us is itself a station.

سَيِّئَةٌ تَسُوءُكَ خَيْرٌ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ مِنْ حَسَنَةٍ تُعْجِبُكَ

“A sin that grieves you is better in the sight of God than a good deed that makes you proud.”

— Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Commander of the Faithful, Nahj al-Balagha, Saying 46.

Better a heart broken by acknowledged sin than a heart inflated by an obedience that has lost its sincerity.

The first half of the criterion asks us: where is your refusal?

The second half asks us: which of your sins have you been treating as small?

Both questions are asked, every day, by the criterion of Karbala; both must be answered honestly.

The seventy-two stood because they had refused their inner Yazid in a thousand small daily battles.

The Khawas of Kufa fell because they had treated those battles as small.

And we — tonight, on the eve of the tenth — choose which side of that ledger we will spend the rest of our lives writing ourselves into.

Imam Ali on the Greatest Jihad

And Imam Ali did not leave us only the diagnostic of failure.

He gave us the lock that is also the way forward.

جاهِدْ نَفْسَكَ عَلى طاعَةِ اللّهِ مُجاهَدَة العَدُوِّ عَدُوَّهُ، وغالِبْها مُغالَبَةَ الضِّدِّ ضِدَّهُ، فَإنَّ أقْوىَ النّاسِ مَنْ قَوِيَ على نَفْسِهِ

“Fight against your soul in obedience to God the way an enemy would fight his enemy, and overpower it the way a rival would overpower his opponent — for indeed the strongest person is the one who subdues his self.”

— Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Commander of the Faithful, Ghurar al-Hikam wa Durar al-Kalim of al-Amidi, Topic 86, Section 16.

Imam Ali — the man who at the Battle of Khaybar lifted a gate single-handed, the man whose sword at Badr and Uhud and Khandaq turned the tide of the early battles of Islam — that man tells us that the strongest person, the aqwa al-nas, is not the man who can fight his outer enemy.

The strongest person is the man who can fight his inner self.

Every Day Is Ashura — Revisited

And so.

The Dr Shariati frame from the fourth night.

Now lands in its fullest meaning.

It is Ashura every day because the criterion is applied every day.

It is Karbala every land because the field of the inner jihad is wherever you are standing right now.

The criterion does not retire after Muharram.

The criterion was not closed when Imam Husayn fell.

The Empire Begins in the Heart

And here is the structural payoff that closes tonight.

If we do not control the Yazid inside us — if we do not refuse the Pharaoh in our nafs, if we do not turn the staff against the empire in our own heart — then what is inside us will, eventually, pour out.

And what pours out is exactly the evil the empires perform on the outside.

The empires of the world are not in the world.

The empires of the world begin in the heart that refused its own jihad.

The American empire did not start in Washington.

The American empire started in every American heart that, given the option between tawhid and consumption, chose consumption.

The Zionist regime did not start in Tel Aviv.

The Zionist regime started in every heart, of any tradition, that chose the tribe over the truth.

The takfiri network did not start in Raqqa.

It started in every heart that chose the ease of declaring an enemy over the labour of seeing a brother.

The British empire did not start in Whitehall.

It started in every English heart that, given the option between Christ and conquest, chose conquest.

Every empire of the world is built out of the small choices of unconverted hearts.

And the work of the criterion — the work Imam Husayn has been asking of us for thirteen and a half centuries — is the work of converting our own hearts before the empire of any age can build itself out of them.

That is the criterion, fully applied.

That is jihad al-akbar.

That is the work that begins tonight, after this sermon, in the chamber of every one of us.

The Criterion — and the Pause

Imam Husayn is the criterion — for the empire out there and the empire in here.

The criterion is continuous, for every day of the rest of our lives.

And the work of the criterion is never only out there; it begins, every morning, in the chamber Imam Ali called the trench of the self.

And now — having received what we have received — we pause.

We have walked nine nights together; tonight is the tenth.

After tonight — for about five weeks, while the candle continues — the pulpit closes.

The work is now in your life.

Arbaeen is coming.

Arbaeen is on the 20th day of Safar — the 40th day after Imam Husayn, the Master of Witnesses, fell at noon on the tenth.

About five weeks from tonight.

We will gather again from the eve of the 15th of Safar — to walk the last five nights of the road that ends at the body of our Imam on Arbaeen morning.

We return because the story does not end at noon on Ashura.

There is a witness after the witness.

And her name is Sayyedah Zaynab.

About five weeks from now, we will begin again at the body of our beloved Imam — not at noon, but at evening, when the sister stands over him and refuses to leave.

That is the road ahead.

The Pact We Make Tonight

Three propositions to carry through the five-week silence between Ashura and the start of the Arbaeen sessions on the eve of the fifteenth of Safar.

First.

We have walked nine nights to learn how to weigh.

Tonight we have learned what we weigh against.

We will not call any death shahada that does not stand the test of Imam Husayn.

We will not bless the word until we know it.

Second.

We will not flinch from naming what the imperial counterfeit looks like in our own age.

The witness against the regimes IS the witness for the peoples.

We honour the peoples by naming what the regimes have done in their name.

We name the system that has lost its godliness.

We do not collapse the system to the leader at its head; we name what an unchecked self becomes when given an empire.

Third.

The criterion is not for the great moments.

The criterion is for tonight, after this sermon, before we sleep — and tomorrow morning, and the morning after that, and every morning for the rest of our lives.

We will say La ilaha illa Allah — there is no god, except God — with the full negation of every false sovereign of the heart, and the full affirmation of the One.

We will fight the inner Yazid as Imam Ali told us to fight him — as an enemy fights his enemy.

We will treat no sin as small.

We will weep, when God’s mercy lifts us to it, the sin that grieves us — and we will not be made proud by any deed that does not also humble us.

Three propositions: the criterion, the empires, the daily refusal.

By God’s mercy, we will carry these for five weeks — until the eve of the 15th of Safar, when we return for The Witness After the Witness, our next teacher Sayyedah Zaynab.

By God’s mercy, the bodies that walk back into this room will be a little more like the bodies that stood with Imam Husayn at Karbala — and a little less like the bodies that stayed home in Kufa.

And the question we carry home with us — the question this series began with on the first night, the question we ask tonight in the broken voice of the Imam who comes after — is the question God asked Cain on the empty field, after the first qurban:

The question Abel’s blood has been asking the earth ever since.

Are we still walking, brother?

Or have we let the small sins grow into the inability to refuse?

Or have we stayed in Kufa with the doors locked, and let the Husayn of our hour go alone to the desert?

Tonight we received the criterion.

The criterion is now in our hands.

The walking is what comes next.

The Last Sajdah

And now, the maqtal opens the door we have been standing at all night.

In a moment we will hear the day of Ashura — as the Imam who comes after has carried it, behind the veils of ghaybah, for thirteen and a half centuries.

The morning prayer at Karbala.

The address to the army.

The going-out of the family one by one — Muslim and Hurr and Wahab, the four cherry blossoms of the morning, Habib and Burayr and Zuhayr and Sa’id and Muslim ibn Awsajah, al-Abbas, the suckling infant — every name we have wept for across nine nights, walking out, one by one, until our beloved Imam stands alone in a field of his own family.

The cry that returned no answer.

The final prayer in the midst of arrows — the prayer Sa’id ibn Abdullah al-Hanafi shielded with his body — the prayer that ended in the last sajdah of the religion.

The fall.

The body folded around the infant.

The trampling.

And, after the silence the trampling makes, the recovery — from Sayyedah Zaynab who has been the structural pivot of this series since the eighth night.

Ma ra’aytu illa jamilan — I saw nothing but beauty — in the broken voice that will close the maqtal.

Then the closing benediction, in a voice that — by the time the maqtal reaches its last words — will be different from the voice we have heard for ten nights.

In Your name, O God — Lord of the worlds.

Peace upon Habil, the first witness of the earth.
Peace upon every witness in every tradition who refused to bow to other than God.
Peace upon every man and every woman who has been wronged, expelled from their home, only because they said: our Lord is God.

O God — we have nowhere to go but Your door.

O God — by the inheritance of Adam, of Noah, of Abraham, of Moses, of Jesus, of our master Muhammad that came to rest in the body of our beloved Imam Husayn: accept tonight’s sitting.
Make us heirs of the heir.
Make us walkers of the road.
Make us pray-ers of the prayer the Master of Witnesses prayed at noon on the tenth.

Peace upon Adam, the chosen one of God.

Peace upon Abel, the first qurban the earth received — and peace upon every brother whose blood, since then, has asked the question.

Peace upon Noah, who called his people night and day, and whose ark carried the seed forward.

Peace upon Abraham, the friend of God — and upon Ishmael, the son spared so that the son to come would, by God’s decree, be the great sacrifice the angel promised.

Peace upon Moses, who spoke with God, and upon his brother Aaron.
Peace upon their staff, raised against Pharaoh.

Peace upon Jesus son of Mary, the spirit of God — and peace upon his mother Mary, the truthful one.

Peace upon David and upon Solomon, upon Zechariah and upon his son John the Baptist.

Peace upon every prophet whose name we know, and every prophet whose name only You know.

Peace upon our master Muhammad, the beloved of God.
Peace upon his daughter, Sayyedah Fatimah al-Zahra, the chief of the women of the worlds.

Peace upon the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib — who taught us, in his Ghurar al-Hikam, that the strongest person is the one who subdues his own self.
Who taught us, in his Nahj al-Balagha, that the greatest sin is the one the doer considers small.
Who taught us, on a Thursday night with Kumayl ibn Ziyad in the cemetery of Kufa, the supplication we still recite — the plea for wirdan wahidan, that our deeds and our devotions may all become one continuous devotion.

Peace upon Imam Hasan, the patient one.

Peace upon our beloved Imam Husayn, the Master of Witnesses.

And we ask You, O God — by his blood, by his prayer in the midst of the arrows, by his last sajdah, by every wound the chronicles count and every wound only You count — make us of his friends.

Peace upon his sister Sayyedah Zaynab, the witness after the witness — who watched what no sister should be asked to watch, and who answered the tyrant of Kufa with the line our series has carried since the eighth night: I saw nothing but beauty.

Peace upon Sayyedah Fatimah al-Sughra and Sayyedah Sakinah and Sayyedah Ruqayya — the daughters who walked the captives’ road.

Peace upon Sayyedah Rabab, the mother of the suckling infant — who would not leave the grave for a year.

Peace upon Sayyedah Umm al-Banin, the mother of al-Abbas — who sent the four moons of her household and did not, when the news came, weep for her own sons until the men of the household had wept first for our beloved Imam.

Peace upon al-Abbas ibn Ali, the moon of the Banu Hashim.

Peace upon Ali al-Akbar.

Peace upon Qasim ibn al-Hasan.

Peace upon Aun and Muhammad, the sons of Sayyedah Zaynab and Abdullah ibn Ja’far at-Tayyar.

Peace upon Ali al-Asghar, the suckling — whose throat the arrow found in his father’s arms.

Peace upon every member of the family of the Prophet who fell on the desert of Karbala.

Peace upon Muslim ibn Aqil — the ambassador who fell in Kufa.
Peace upon Hurr — who turned at the last hour.
Peace upon Wahab al-Kalbi — the convert, with his mother and his wife at the tent.
Peace upon Habib ibn Muzahir — the elder, who laughed in the morning of Ashura.
Peace upon Burayr ibn Khudayr — the doyen of the reciters.
Peace upon Zuhayr ibn al-Qayn — who turned at Zubala.
Peace upon Sa’id ibn Abdullah al-Hanafi — whose body took the arrows for the prayer.
Peace upon Muslim ibn Awsajah — the resolute.
Peace upon every name the chronicles preserve and every name only You preserve.

Peace upon the Imams of guidance — Imam Sajjad and Imam al-Baqir, Imam al-Sadiq and Imam al-Kazim, Imam al-Rida and Imam al-Jawad, Imam al-Hadi and Imam al-Askari until the chain reaches the Imam of our Age.

Peace upon Sayyed Abbas al-Musawi — who taught us the condition for God’s guardianship and the lesson of Imam Husayn.
Peace upon his wife Sayyedah Siham, and upon their five-year-old son Sayyed Husayn, who were martyred with him on the sixteenth of February, 1992, in the south of Lebanon.
Peace upon Shaykh Ragheb Harb.

Peace upon Hajj Qasem Soleimani — the lover of eshgh, the seeker of ma’rifat, the shaheed whose blood the Americans spilled at Baghdad airport on the third of January, 2020.
By Your mercy, raise him with our beloved Imam Husayn.
By Your mercy, make us of those who learned from him.

Peace upon Hajj Imad Mughniyeh — the architect of the Islamic resistance — martyred in Damascus in February of 2008.

Peace upon Hajj Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis — martyred on the same night as Hajj Qasem, at the same airport, by the same hand.

Peace upon Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah — Sayyed of the Resistance — martyred on the 27th of September, 2024 — by the same regime that has stolen the name of the Jewish people to commit what it commits.

Peace upon Imam Khomeini — who taught us, in his Jihad al-Akbar, that the inner struggle is the foundation of the outer; and who, in his Hukumat-e Islami, taught us na sharqi, na gharbi — neither East nor West.

Peace upon Imam Khamenei — who carried the same lamp for forty years and who, in his final address eleven days before they killed him in February of this year, said exactly what our beloved Imam Husayn said in Medina: someone like me does not give allegiance to someone like him.

O God.

We pray to You for Imam Sayyed Mujtaba Khamenei — the new Wali al-Faqih, the son who has taken his father’s place at the head of the worship.
Preserve him for us, O God. Strengthen him.
Guide him.
Make him the leader his father trained him to be, and the leader You have appointed him to be, until the Imam of our Age returns and the line he carries is handed back to its rightful holder.

Peace upon the children of Minab and the young men of the Resistance — every Palestinian, Lebanese, Iraqi, Iranian, Yemeni, Syrian, Bahraini fighter who took his father’s place and his grandfather’s burden in his hands.

Peace upon the medics in Gaza who stayed when everyone else left.
Peace upon the Sunni families of Boukamal who wrote to Hajj Qasem after the liberation operation.
Peace upon every defender of the shrines.

Peace upon the children of Gaza — every one of them — the children the empire has killed for two and a half years now in front of our eyes.

Peace upon the women of Gaza.
Peace upon the mothers.
Peace upon the orphans.
Peace upon the displaced.

Peace upon every wronged person in every land — the Yemeni mother, the Iraqi father, the Bahraini sister, the Kashmiri grandmother, the Rohingya child — who has been wronged because they said our Lord is God.

O God. Hasten the return of the Imam of our Age.
Make us of his helpers.
Make us of his soldiers.
Make us of those who, when he calls, are already standing.

Let us, O God, before we leave this room — and before this sermon turns into the maqtal — recite the three verses we recite at the close of every gathering.

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

“Indeed, we belong to God, and to Him we return.”

وَسَيَعْلَمُ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا أَيَّ مُنقَلَبٍ يَنقَلِبُونَ

“And the wrongdoers will soon know at what goal they will end up.”

حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

“God is sufficient for us, and He is the best of guardians.”

And our final pledge tonight, before the maqtal begins —

“O God — we will return.
By Your mercy, on the eve of the 15th of Safar — five nights before Arbaeen, forty days from this morning — we return.
To the body of Your Master of Witnesses.
To the sister who survived him.
To the road that does not end at noon on Ashura.
We will return.
Amen.”

Amen, O Lord Sustainer of the Universes.

Amen, O Most Merciful of the Merciful.

And from Him alone is all ability, and He has authority over all things.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِاللَّهِ

وَعَلَى الْأَرْوَاحِ الَّتِي حَلَّتْ بِفِنَائِكَ

عَلَيْكُمْ مِنَّا جَمِيعًا سَلاَمُ اللَّهِ أَبَدًا مَا بَقِينَا وَبَقِيَ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ

وَلا جَعَلَهُ اللَّهُ آخِرَ الْعَهْدِ مِنَّا لِزِيَارَتِكُمْ

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَى الْحُسَيْنِ

Peace be upon you, O Aba Abdillah (O Husayn),
and upon the souls who have gathered in your courtyard.

Upon you, from us all, is the peace of God—forever,
for as long as we remain and as long as night and day endure.

And may God never make this our last pledge to visit you.

Introduction

Eight nights, we have walked.

We recovered the word — shahada means witness.

We traced its lineage from Abel, peace and blessings be upon him, through the prophets, through the Ahl al-Bayt, to a plain in Iraq.

We learned the theology of Shaheed Mutahhari’s five kinds of death; the sociology of Doctor Shariati’s shahada of the tongue and shahada of the life.

We honoured the Christian neighbour, the secular revolutionary, the anti-colonial cause, the seductive aesthetic of the cherry blossom — and the seventy-two whose loyalty was to God and to the Truth, not to a flag or an emperor.

Eight nights of building.

Tonight we draw the line.

Not what is shahada — we have built the answer over eight nights.

Tonight: what is NOT shahada that calls itself shahada?

This is the corrective night.

This is the night the Master of Witnesses, peace and blessings be upon him, requires of every preacher who claims his name: know the counterfeits, and refuse to bless them.

And it is the night I would, rather not preach — because tonight we will name practices that some in our own communities perform; claims that some in our own scholarly traditions have made; forms that some in our own century have come to mistake for the substance.

But we will speak with great gentleness.

I make a pact with you tonight: I will speak with firmness on the truth, and with gentleness on the people.

The people who perform these practices are not enemies.

They are loved by Imam Husayn, and they are loved by us.

It is the work of raising the level so that we walk together, more clearly, towards what the witnesses themselves were calling us to.

This is not my framing.

It is the Qur’an’s description of the Prophet’s true companions in Surah al-Fath:

مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ۚ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ أَشِدَّاءُ عَلَى الْكُفَّارِ رُحَمَاءُ بَيْنَهُمْ

“Muhammad is the Messenger of God; and those with him are firm of heart against those who reject the truth — compassionate among themselves.”

— Qur’an, Surah al-Fath (the Chapter of Victory) #48, Verse 29

Allamah Tabataba’i, in al-Mizan, names the pairing as structurally theological: the second clause is meant to dispel the notion that hardness towards falsehood might entail harshness amongst themselves.

Firmness with falsehood is not — must not be — harshness with the people.

Tonight we hold the dyad as God Himself paired it.

And the verse continues —

Imam al-Sadiq, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked what mark this names, and he said:

The mark on the believer’s face is what consistent night-prayer does to it over years.

Hold that.

We will return to this mark when we speak of the young Iranian named in honour of the first martyr of the Ahl al-Bayt after the passing of the Prophet, who stood at the shrine of Imam Reza on the 21st Night of the month of Ramadhan and asked his mother to pray for his shahada.

The mark of the prostration was on his face when ISIS led him by the rope.

That is the same mark Imam al-Sadiq named.

And — listen — God says in this same verse:

The dyad of firmness-with-falsehood and tenderness-with-the-people is announced in the prophetic chain.

In the law of Moses.

In the gospel of Jesus son of Mary.

Fulfilled in the community of Muhammad.

That is the honour-without-conflation we locked at Session 5 — Quranically grounded, prophetically continuous.

A short cross-reference, before we begin, to the third night — Five Kinds of Death.

Just as modern culture has normalised certain criminal deaths by re-labelling them — abortion as choice, assisted suicide as mercy — so it has normalised certain false martyrdoms by borrowing the word.

The same theological move; the language of dignity laid over an act dignity does not bless.

Tonight we name the move in its other direction: the language of witness laid over forms the witness himself would not have blessed.

Hold one word in your hearts the entire night.

The word is hujjat — proof.

The Hidden Imam, may our souls be his ransom and may God hasten his return, is al-Hujjah — the Proof.

The seventy-two of last night were named by Sayyedah Zaynab, peace and blessings be upon her, as the loyalty to God Himself, to the Truth God revealed, and to her brother as the proof of that Truth on earth — they were hujjat in their bodies.

And tonight, you will hear that same word placed by Hajj Qasem Soleimani on the throat of a young Iranian named Mohsen Hojaji — whose surname carries the H-J-J root, the very root of the word hujjat; whose first name his mother gave him in honour of Mohsen ibn Ali, peace and blessings be upon him, the first martyr of the Ahl al-Bayt after the passing of the Prophet.

Hajj Qasem said:

Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei sealed it:

The night sits between this proposition and the takeaway: a true witness is one who has become a hujjat.

Three movements tonight, and a fourth that closes a road we have been walking together for nights.

First — Shaheed Mutahhari’s catalogue: the methodology and the historical corruptions.

Second — the four counterfeits walked out into our own century: the political, the ritual, the cultural, and — for the first time in this series — the imperial.

Between the second movement and the third, I will return us to the four-stage road we have been walking with one man since the third night, and I will complete the road.

And then third — the three tests of true witness.

And then, the maqtal — and tonight the maqtal is for the witness no counterfeiter can ever steal: the suckling infant in his father’s arms.

The Verse of the Night

قُلْ هَلْ نُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِالْأَخْسَرِينَ أَعْمَالًا ۝ الَّذِينَ ضَلَّ سَعْيُهُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ يَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ يُحْسِنُونَ صُنْعًا

“Say: Shall We inform you about the biggest losers in regard to works? Those whose endeavour goes awry in the life of the world, while they suppose they are doing good.”

He does not say:

He says:

The verse names the most dangerous category of human action:

The takfiri who beheaded Mohsen Hojaji believed he was doing the work of God — that the captive at his feet was murtadd — an apostate, and the blade in his hand was an instrument of jihad.

The kamikaze pilot whose letter we read last night believed he was offering himself for the emperor in a sacred act.

The tatbir-practitioner whose blood soaks his clothes believes he is mourning the Master of Witnesses.

The American president who signed the order to bomb Hiroshima believed he was saving lives.

The empire that invokes Amalek over Gaza believes it is fulfilling a sacred duty.

Every counterfeit — by definition — is sincerely held.

That is what makes it dangerous.

The Three Tests — A Preview

Before we walk into the four counterfeits, hear the criterion we will apply to each one.

Three tests, and we will return to them in full at the end of the night.

First — is the witness in service of the covenant with God Himself; not a flag, not an ideology, not a self-image, not a state?

Second — is the act consistent with the law God has revealed to His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, his family, and his righteous companions?

Third — did the witness choose, in full awareness of what the choice cost —

as Shaheed Mutahhari names it?

Three doors.

One criterion underneath.

We will apply them as we go.

The Honest Pulpit

The spine of tonight is a book.

Two books, in fact, by the same author — the martyred scholar Ayatollah Murtadha Mutahhari, whose blood was on the steps of his own university in Tehran on the second of May, 1979.

Tahrifat al-Ashura — Misrepresentations and Distortions in the Rituals of Ashura, and Hamasah-yi Husayni — The Husayni Epic.

He wrote them not as an academic, but as a man who had heard the false sayings from too many minbars.

“Tahrif is an indirect blow and a stab in the back.”

Listen to the choice of words.

The distortion of Karbala has done more damage to the Shia of Imam Ali, than every sword Yazid ever sent.

Yazid killed seventy-two on a plain.

The distorters have killed the lessons of Karbala in millions of hearts who heard the story without ever being told what it was for.

The discipline has four steps.

Honour the love that produced the embellishment.

Name where it came from.

Lift it away from the canonical narration.

Restore the witness to its actual integrity.

And the line we opened the series with on the very first night — Shaheed Mutahhari’s indictment of the pulpit:

“Most of the preachers who narrate the story of Karbala call Imam Husayn the Master of Martyrs — and yet they have little analytical insight into the question of martyrdom. They describe the events in such a way as though he lost his life in vain.”

The disease of the pulpit Shaheed Mutahhari named at the start of our series is the same disease whose symptoms we catalogue tonight.

In Tahrifat al-Ashura he names four corruptions.

One. The exaggerated narrations that contradict the Qur’an and authentic hadith — folkloric inflation.

Two. The rituals that contradict Islamic law — bladed self-flagellation that injures the body and impedes the obligatory worship.

Three. The reduction of Imam Husayn’s witness to weeping without content — tears without theology; professional grief that flatters itself by its volume and never asks what the grief is for.

Four. The fabricated sayings that everyone knows — narrations whose first attestation is in a sixteenth- or nineteenth-century text. Kashifi’s Rawdat al-Shuhada, al-Darbandi’s Asrar al-Shahadat.

We honour the love that produced these texts.

We do not, in this pulpit, teach their narrations as canonical.

Shaheed Mutahhari named the disease of his own century.

Tonight we ask the harder question:

The political claim, the ritual claim, the cultural claim, and the imperial claim — four counterfeits walked out into our time.

The Same Word, the Opposite Content

The first counterfeit is easy to name; almost impossible to argue out of, once it has captured a young man’s heart, because it speaks the holiest words our tradition has.

ISIS (aka DAESH).

Al-Qaeda.

Jabhat al-Nusra.

The takfiri network — the network that takes the takfir-of-the-Muslim-by-the-Muslim as its theology and the suicide-bombing-of-the-mosque-and-the-market as its tactic.

They call their own suicide-attackers’ deaths istishhad.

They label their captives murtadd — apostates — and call the act of beheading them jihad, performed under the black flag bearing the shahada itself.

They use the same vocabulary, claim the same flag, invoke the same God the Master of Witnesses invoked.

The senior scholars of our tradition have already done the work.

The Society of Seminary Teachers of the Hawza of Qom, on 17 February 2015, within forty-eight hours of the takfiris’ beheading of the twenty-one Coptic Christians on the beach in Libya, condemned the takfiris by name and called their action “anti-Islamic.”

بسم الله الرحمن الرحیم

جامعه مدرسین حوزه علمیه قم اقدام اخیر گروه تروریستی داعش در سر بریدن گروهی از شهروندان مسیحی مصری در لیبی را محکوم می‌کند و تأکید می‌نماید که تنها راه مبارزه با تروریست‌های داعش، وحدت جهان اسلام است.

چنین رویدادهایی ماهیت ضد‌اسلامی عوامل تکفیری و تهدید تمام‌عیار آنان را بیش از پیش آشکار خواهد ساخت.

“In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

The Society of Seminary Teachers of the Hawza of Qom condemns the recent action of the terrorist group DAESH in the beheading of a group of Egyptian Christian citizens in Libya, and emphasises that the only path of struggle against the terrorists of DAESH is the unity of the Islamic world.

Such events will further disclose the anti-Islamic nature of the takfiri agents and the full extent of their threat.”

And five days before — on 12 February 2015 — the Hawza of Najaf had already spoken. Ayatollah Sayyed Ali al-Sistani, in his official document Advice and Guidance to the Fighters on the Battlefields, point six:

لا تتّهموا أحداً في دينه لكي تستحلّوا دمه، كما يفعل الخوارج ومن تبعهم في هذا العصر.

“Do not accuse anyone of apostasy or heresy in their religion to justify shedding their blood, as the Kharijites and their modern followers do.”

Listen to what the Najaf Marja’iyya has placed on the takfiri network: the way of the Kharijites, returned in our age.

The Hawza of Qom has spoken.

The Hawza of Najaf has spoken.

But we do not refuse this counterfeit only with rulings.

We refuse it with a face.

The figure who stands in the mirror against the takfiri counterfeit — whose face the world saw on the very same day — was a young Iranian named Shaheed Mohsen Hojaji.

A Defender of the Holy Shrine of Sayyedah Zaynab, at Damascus.

Captured at the Tanf border crossing in Syria on the 7th of August 2017.

Beheaded by ISIS two days later.

He was twenty-six years old.

His son Ali was one year and four months old, asleep in their home in Najafabad.

The viral photograph:

The calm face, the wounded right arm, the captor’s hand on his neck, the knife held just out of the frame, the black smoke billowing from the airstrike that broke the position.

And in the centre of all of it, his eyes.

His wife — Zahra Abbasi — spoke about that photograph:

به چشم‌های شوهر من نگاه کنید، اصلاً ترس در این چشم‌ها نیست، همه‌اش شجاعت است، دلیری است. محسن توی این عکس مثل کوه با صلابت است.

“Look at my husband’s eyes — there is no fear in these eyes at all. It is all bravery; it is daring. Mohsen, in this photo, is like a mountain — steadfast.”

— Zahra Abbasi, wife of Shaheed Mohsen Hojaji

The wife of a twenty-six-year-old who has been beheaded last week, looking at the photograph the world has just seen, finds in his eyes not fear but the mountain.

The takfiris labelled Hojaji murtadd — apostate.

They did not call his death shahada; they reserved that word for their own dead.

But they performed the killing as a religious act under their black flag bearing the shahada itself — claiming the work of God in the destruction of the one we know was a witness for God.

The world’s eye, on that day, saw what shahada actually looked like — and it was Hojaji’s face, not the man holding the knife.

Apply the Tests

Test one fails — loyalty is to sect-purity, not to God.

Test two fails — the deen requires evidence and due process before a Muslim's blood may be shed; takfir declared on whim, without trial and without proof, is precisely what Ayatollah Sistani named as

Test three fails — the script is the system’s, not the conscience’s.

What Hajj Qasem said about Hojaji that day is the line that opens the door we walk through tonight.

Hold the word hujjat — we will return to it in a few minutes.

A Hard Topic, with Love

The second counterfeit is harder than the first.

Because it lives among us — in the homes of people who love Imam Husayn as much as you do.

The practice sometimes called the blood-mourning — tatbir, with blades or chains or swords on the day of Ashura, until the clothes are soaked with the believer’s own blood.

It does not appear in the biography of Sayyedah Zaynab — and she walked the captives’ road from Karbala to Damascus and back to Medina.

She had every reason in human history to mourn dramatically.

She did not do this.

It does not appear in the worship of Imam Zayn al-Abidin.

It entered our community in the late Safavid and Qajar period — sixteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth centuries — under specific cultural pressures we can trace.

The question is never:

The question is always:

Across one hundred years of Hawza scholarship — four voices, four generations, one principle.

Ayatollah Sayyed Muhsin al-Amin of Lebanon, in Risalat al-Tanzih li-A’mal al-Shabih, Sidon, 1928 — the striking of heads with knives and the striking of backs with iron chains: self-harm, religiously forbidden.

Imam Ruhollah Khomeini, in Istifta’at-e Imam Question 37: if these acts cause disrepute to the school of thought, they are not permissible. And in any case — they should refrain from such acts.

In oral teaching in Nahdat-e Ashura, he named the practice: qameh-zani — which causes disrepute to Islam — perform the processions and the chest-beating in their more dignified form instead.

Ayatollah Sayyed Ali al-Sistani of Najaf has not issued a numbered istifta’ specifically on tatbir, and that pastoral abstention is itself wisdom.

But his universal principle is unambiguous: whatever causes significant harm, or causes disrepute to the religion and the school of thought, is not permissible. His office has confirmed: the principle applies to tatbir.

And the binding hukm — edict — of the the martyred Wali al-Faqih — Imam Sayed Ali Khamenei, which is carried by the current Wali al-Faqih — Imam Sayyed Mujtaba Khamenei.

Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei, Ajwibat al-Istifta’at, Question 1461 — indexed under tatbir:

ما يوجب ضرراً على الإنسان من الأمور المذكورة، أو يوجب وهن الدين والمذهب، فهو حرام يجب على المؤمنين الإجتناب عنه. ولا يخفى ما في كثير من تلك المذكورات من سوء السمعة والتوهين عند الناس لمذهب أهل البيت، وهذا من أكبر الضرر وأعظم الخسارة.

“Whatever, of the mentioned matters, causes harm to a person, or causes disrepute to the religion and the school of thought — it is forbidden, and the believers must refrain from it. And it is not hidden how much, in many of those mentioned matters, brings ill-repute and diminishment, in the eyes of the people, to the school of the Ahl al-Bayt — and this is among the greatest of harms and the gravest of losses.”

Four voices.

Four generations.

One principle.

But there is a second argument that closes this matter for any Shia who has ever sat at the feet of an honest zakir.

A believer cuts themselves on the day of Ashura, until their clothes are soaked with their own blood.

That blood makes the clothes ritually impure.

They cannot pray the obligatory Dhuhr — noon — prayer in those clothes.

And here is the question that closes the matter:

It was not the blood.

It was the prayer.

At noon on the tenth, in the heat of Karbala, with the swords of the enemy raining around them, Imam Husayn and his companions stopped, faced the qiblah, and prayed.

Sa’id ibn Abdullah al-Hanafi — one of the seventy-two we honoured last night — took arrows in his back so that the prayer could be completed.

That is Ashura.

The standing, mid-slaughter, before God.

If the form you are calling mourning Imam Husayn stops you from doing what Imam Husayn himself stopped to do —

I will tell you something I watched, in one of our own communities, in 2012.

I spoke against tatbir from the pulpit at a centre — a primarily Pakistani and Indian congregation — and the reaction was angry.

They were sure I had insulted them.

And then on the day of Ashura, many of those same brothers performed tatbir.

They were bloodied.

And — exactly as the rulings predicted — they could not pray Dhuhr.

And I have to say something harder, with love.

Tatbir done with sincere love is still navel-gazing love.

Last night we said it about the kamikaze: the form looks like loyalty; the content is the state’s.

The same architecture is at work in the bladed mourning.

And then the line.

He has more than enough of his own and his family’s.

The Master of Martyrs has the blood of his brother al-Abbas, of his son Ali al-Akbar, of his nephew Qasim, of his nephews Aun and Muhammad — peace and blessings be upon them all — of seventy-two sworn companions; and as we will hear in tonight’s maqtal, of an infant in his own arms.

What he needs is for us to be like the seventy-two — to be loyal to God Himself, and to the Truth God revealed, and to the Imam God appointed.

Today, that loyalty is loyalty to the Hidden Imam — and to the Wali al-Faqih — Imam Sayyed Mujtaba Khamenei — who holds his line until the appointed hour

Apply the Tests

Test one diverted — the form serves self-display, not God.

Test two fails — a pillar of Islam missed for a ritual the deen never asked for.

Test three fails — sincerity without consciousness.

To anyone who has done this practice — we honour the love.

The love is real.

The Master of Witnesses sees it.

The blood you shed for Imam Husayn — if you turned it instead into the prayer he stopped to perform; into the worship he died to preserve — that is what the love is FOR.

The Borrowed Cross

The third counterfeit walks in a different way.

It does not live in a community.

It lives in the air of our age.

And we draw the line here with great care, because this is where the most confusion enters.

The believer who keeps the photograph of Imam Husayn’s Maqam, or of Hajj Qasem, or of Shaheed Hojaji, on their phone or on their wall as a reminder — as the call back to the witness when the day is heavy — is not the counterfeit.

The Master of Witnesses is honoured by the eye that returns to him.

When the martyr’s face on the profile picture is no longer for the martyr, but for the followers; no longer the remembrance, but the badge.

So too with the visit to the shrine.

The believer who travels to Karbala, to Najaf, to Mashhad, to Damascus — who walks the pilgrimage road with sore feet and a bleeding heart, for the love of the Imam alone — this is the highest of acts.

Ziyarah is not the counterfeit.

The Imams, peace and blessings be upon them all, have asked us to come to them.

When the visit becomes the post; when the post becomes the self; when the self travels nowhere but to the next post.

And it is the same disease, the same architecture, that lets the wealthy man perform Hajj every year as a badge of his standing — while the poor man at the end of his own street has never seen Mecca; that lets him send a family on Umrah and then remind them, year after year, of the kindness done to them — when the truth of it is the inverse.

The believer of substance kisses the feet of the one through whom God gave him the chance.

The believer of form puts the receipt on the wall.

Theology reduced to a mood.

Imam Husayn reduced to a hashtag.

The form remains; the substance leaks out into the algorithm.

A second form this counterfeit takes deserves naming carefully.

Years ago in Tanzania, in Dar es Salaam, I sat in a Muharram majlis and heard a zakir deliver a narration I have never been able to find in any classical chronicle — that on the day of Ashura, Imam Husayn had asked Yazid’s army to be permitted to go to India, because the people there had a good religion.

The intent was kind.

The substance is a tahrif.

The historical record.

Authenticated across the chronicles — Sheikh al-Mufid’s al-Irshad, Ibn A’tham al-Kufi, Tabari, the Lohoof of Sayyid Ibn Tawus, Ayatollah Reyshahri’s Chronicles — Imam Husayn offered Umar ibn Sa’ad’s army three alternatives:

India is not in the classical Arabic.

The phrase is “a distant land” — left unspecified.

A question may have surfaced.

Why did the Master of Witnesses offer these alternatives at all?

Has he not come this far precisely to refuse the regime?

The answer is

The Master of Witnesses did not come to Karbala to die.

He came to be the proof of God on earth in his age — and the proof requires that the regime be given the choice.

This is the methodology God names in a verse you recite every morning if you say Du’a al-Ahd:

ظَهَرَ الْفَسَادُ فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِي النَّاسِ لِيُذِيقَهُمْ بَعْضَ الَّذِي عَمِلُوا لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

“Corruption has appeared in the land and the sea by what the hands of men have wrought, that He may make them taste a part of that which they have done — so that they may return.”

— Qur’an, Surah al-Rum (the Chapter of the Romans) #30, Verse 41

Every consequence, every trial, every overturning, is itself an invitation back.

And in Du’a al-Ahd — the supplication of the Covenant attributed to Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq, recited every morning by the believer pledged to the Imam of our Age — this very verse is invoked, alongside the petition for the zuhoor — return — of the Hidden Imam.

Where the hands of men have wrought destruction, God restores through the appointed proof.

So when Imam Husayn offered Yazid’s army return, frontier, or Yazid himself — he was extending la’allahum yarji’oon to a regime whose refusal was their own conviction.

They refused.

They sealed their refusal with the throat of his infant son.

Tonight we plant the seed.

The Lucknow scholar Sayyed Ali Naqi Naqvi — Naqqan Sahib — corrected the geographic specification a century ago:

“Imam Husayn asked Hurr to let him go to some distant land.

The Imam did not mention Hind — India.

But some people in India took that as a reference to Hindustan.”

The second step — that Imam Husayn endorsed Hindu religion — first appears in a nineteenth-century Punjabi Jangnama composed around 1850.

A folk-epic.

Not a chronicle.

And the Master of Witnesses is the proof of God on earth in his age.

To put in his mouth “the people of India have a good religion” is to do to him what the kamikaze script did to the Japanese boy in the cockpit — to use his voice to say what he did not say.

Let me distinguish, with love.

There is a real community I honour separately, by name.

The Husayni Brahmins — the Mohyal Brahmins of the Punjab — a real Hindu community whose oral tradition preserves the memory of Rishab Dutt having led a small band of Indian career-soldiers and fought alongside Imam Husayn at Karbala.

We honour the Husayni Brahmins.

The first is a community that came to Imam Husayn — and that remain.

The second puts words in Imam Husayn’s mouth that are not his.

The first we honour.

The second we lift, gently — with the gentleness we lifted the wedding-henna of Qasim and the perfume-shop of Habib ibn Muzahir.

A particular form this counterfeit takes deserves naming further — because it appears, increasingly, in our own pulpits.

When a community whose own tradition has produced the witness — Karbala, the seventy-two, Ali al-Asghar in his father’s arms, Sayyedah Zaynab in the courts of the tyrant — borrows the iconography of another tradition’s suffering, on the grounds that the borrowing will give us political standing in a contemporary conversation, we have decorated the witness with someone else’s clothing.

One example.

I will not name the speaker; we critique the move, we never attack the person.

Some years ago, a sermon was delivered in our community in Britain that attempted to draw equivalence between Karbala and the Holocaust — the Nazi extermination of European Jewry.

The intention may have been solidarity.

The result was a tabyeen failure on three fronts.

Failure One

First. Quranic cherry-picking.

The sermon cited only part of Surah Aal Imran 3:64 —

— and stopped before the verse continues:

The “common word” is the worship of the One God.

Cherry-picking the verse to make it mean “we are all the same” is a tahrif.

The same sermon cited al-Asr 103:2 —

— without Verse 3,

A cherry-picked Qur’an is a tahrif.

Failure Two

Second. Inflated and conflated numbers.

The sermon framed the Holocaust as a Jewish-only catastrophe of six million.

The documented record, from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, is 17,383,900 souls who returned to their Lord in the camps and the killing fields of the Nazi terror.

About six million were Jewish.

About eleven point four million were not — Roma and Sinti, Polish civilians, Soviet prisoners of war, the disabled, religious dissenters, political prisoners, gay men and women, others.

To frame the Holocaust as a single-people catastrophe is to obscure the dead the framing did not need.

Failure Three

Third — and this is the line that closes this counterfeit.

The categorical-difference theological argument.

The dead of the Holocaust did not choose.

They were rounded up, boarded onto trains, stripped, gassed, burned.

Not one of them stood at a doorway, like Hurr ibn Yazid on the morning of Ashura, and said:

They were victims of an industrial atrocity that did not give them a choice.

We honour them.

We mourn them.

We name the system that killed them.

And we do not equate them with the Master of Witnesses — who had a choice; who refused the pledge of allegiance to Yazid even when refusing meant his death and the death of his family.

The Holocaust was atrocity.

Karbala was witness.

And here is the line that forecloses the borrowing.

When Sayyedah Zaynab, stood in the court of Ibn Ziyad — may the mercy of God be distant from him — in the days after Ashura, and was asked how she had seen what was done to her family, she said:

مَا رَأَيْتُ إِلَّا جَمِيلًا

“I saw nothing but beauty.”

What she saw was the loyalty of the seventy-two to God, to the Truth God revealed, and to her brother as the proof of that Truth on earth.

Not the loyalty of a flag.

Not the loyalty of an ethnos.

Not the loyalty of a state or a state’s enemy.

Karbala is not interchangeable with any other suffering, however vast, however terrible — because Karbala’s substance is not the suffering.

Apply the Tests

Test one disqualified — no God-anchor; the loyalty is to a contemporary political claim.

Test two fails — cherry-picked revelation, inflated numbers, conflated categories.

Test three fails — the borrowing is not consciousness, it is the inheritance of someone else’s framing.

The Two Empires of Our Hour

And the fourth counterfeit is the one this series has been building toward.

The most expensively dressed counterfeit.

The one that clothes itself in the most respectable garments of all:

Last night I planted the seed when we spoke of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Tonight I open the seed.

The state-manufactured “righteous nation” claim — the form of empire that justifies its wars by wrapping them in the vocabulary of dignity, freedom, civilisation, democracy, the chosen people, the city on a hill.

The structure is the same as Yazid’s claim — I am the legitimate heir of the Prophet’s family while I slaughter the Prophet’s family.

Imam Husayn refused the form at Karbala.

We refuse it tonight.

Two registers.

Honour without conflation applies between them too.

We name both.

We do not collapse them.

The American Imperial Register

The rhetoric:

These phrases have been deployed for two centuries to dignify what would otherwise be naked imperial action.

The record.

More than four hundred and sixty-nine documented military interventions abroad — verified by the Costs of War Project at Brown and the Congressional Research Service.

The bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, August 1945.

The covert overthrows — Mossadegh 1953; Árbenz 1954; Lumumba 1961; Allende 1973.

The Iran-Iraq dual-arms supply of the 1980s — we sold weapons to both sides of an eight-year war that killed a million people.

The sanctions — Iraq under Oil-for-Food, where five hundred thousand children died by the UN’s own estimate; and a Secretary of State, asked about it on national television, said: “the price was worth it.”

The twelve and more Gaza-ceasefire vetoes since October 2023.

And the tone-lock.

We honour the American mother who lost her son to Iraq.

We honour the American teacher whose schools are starved while bombs are sent to Tel Aviv.

We honour the American worker whose taxes have built nine hundred overseas military bases while their own roads crumble.

This is not anti-American sentiment.

It is the same sentiment America’s own honest dissenters have voiced for a century — from Major General Smedley Butler’s

in 1935, to El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz — Malcolm X —

assassinated for the truth of it on the 21st of February 1965; to Dr Martin Luther King’s

in 1967; to Aaron Bushnell’s last words at the Israeli embassy on the 25th of February 2024

None of them were anti-American.

They were the most American voices their century had to offer.

The Zionist Imperial Register

The rhetoric:

— and the move we name explicitly:

The founding logic — written into the diaries and the essays before the entity existed.

Theodor Herzl, in his diary on 12 June 1895 — two years before the First Zionist Congress, fifty-three years before the UN partition vote:

“We shall try to spirit the penniless population across the border by procuring employment for it in the transit countries, while denying it any employment in our own country... Both the process of expropriation and the removal of the poor must be carried out discreetly and circumspectly.”

The transfer-logic of the Nakba is in the diary of the founder, fifty-three years before the trains and the trucks and the burnt villages of 1948.

“Zionist colonisation must either be terminated or carried out in defiance of the will of the native population... only under the protection of a force independent of the local population — an iron wall which the native population cannot break through.”

And then the dehumanisation language entered the mouths of the politicians, and stayed there.

Menachem Begin, 1982, Knesset speech during the Lebanon war — Palestinians as

Rafael Eitan, in 1983, then Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defence Forces —

Ehud Barak, in 2000 —

Moshe Ya’alon, in 2002, then Chief of Staff —

Ayelet Shaked, in 2014, then a Knesset member, posted on Facebook during the Gaza assault:

Yoav Gallant, on the 9th of October 2023, then Defence Minister:

Benjamin Netanyahu, on the 28th of October 2023, in his speech announcing the ground invasion:

— the explicit invocation of the biblical genocidal command of First Samuel, chapter 15, verse 3.

The pattern is more than eighty years long — older than the Zionist entity’s own UN recognition, reaching back to Jabotinsky’s Iron Wall and to Herzl himself.

The pattern is in their own mouths.

And then the operations followed.

Sabra and Shatila 1982.

Cast Lead 2008-9.

Protective Edge 2014.

Swords of Iron from October 2023, in which, by the most conservative documented count, more than seventy thousand have returned to their Lord — at least half of them women and children.

And the tone-lock again.

The witness against the Zionist regime is not anti-Jewish.

It is anti-the-rhetoric-that-prepares-the-massacre.

We honour the Jewish family that opposes the Zionist regime — and there are many.

The Jewish dissenters from Hannah Arendt to Norman Finkelstein to Naomi Klein to the rabbis of Neturei Karta.

The thousands of Jewish students arrested at Columbia and UCLA in 2024 for refusing this rhetoric in their own community at great personal cost.

The Mandate of Awareness

And here, we bring in our series-wide voice.

Sayyed Abbas al-Musawi — the Secretary-General of Hizbullah, martyred with his wife Sayyeda Siham and their five-year-old son Sayyed Husayn by an Israeli helicopter strike on 16 February 1992.

From the pulpit, in the Bekaa Valley, February 1986, in The Mandate of Awareness:

قد يجذر بنا الأعداء ولكن نحن.. نحن على خط إمامنا الخميني نؤمن بالقاعدة التي سنها هذا الإمام: أقتلونا فإن شعبنا سيعي أكثر فأكثر.

“The enemies may root themselves against us — but we... we are on the path of our Imam Khomeini. We believe in the principle established by this Imam: kill us, for indeed our nation will become more and more aware.”

The mandate of the believer in our time is to know, and to name.

The mandate against the imperial counterfeit is not hatred of any people; it is the disavowal — the bara’a — of every system that calls itself righteous while it kills the children of God.

The fuller treatment of how the Resistance slogans function as bara’a — not baghdh (hatred) — belongs to the Arbaeen body of this series.

Tonight we name the structural critique.

Apply the Tests

Test one inverted — the loyalty is to the throne and the chosen-people claim, not to God.

Test two fails — the oppression of peoples is forbidden in the deen; the Qur’an at al-Hajj 22:39–40 grants the wronged the right to resist.

أُذِنَ لِلَّذِينَ يُقَٰتَلُونَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ ظُلِمُواْۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ نَصۡرِهِمۡ لَقَدِيرٌ

ٱلَّذِينَ أُخۡرِجُواْ مِن دِيَٰرِهِم بِغَيۡرِ حَقٍّ إِلَّآ أَن يَقُولُواْ رَبُّنَا ٱللَّهُۗ وَلَوۡلَا دَفۡعُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلنَّاسَ بَعۡضَهُم بِبَعۡضٖ لَّهُدِّمَتۡ صَوَٰمِعُ وَبِيَعٞ وَصَلَوَٰتٞ وَمَسَٰجِدُ يُذۡكَرُ فِيهَا ٱسۡمُ ٱللَّهِ كَثِيرٗاۗ وَلَيَنصُرَنَّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَنصُرُهُۥٓۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَقَوِيٌّ عَزِيزٌ

Those who are fought against are permitted [to fight] because they have been wronged, and God is indeed able to help them

—those who were expelled from their homes unjustly, only because they said, ‘God is our Lord.’ Had not God repulsed the people from one another, ruin would have befallen the monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques in which God’s Name is much invoked. God’s will surely help those who help Him. Indeed God is all-strong, all-mighty.

Test three fails — the script is the empire’s, the consciousness is what the empire cannot allow.

And the figure killed by this very counterfeit — not by ISIS, not by the takfiri who beheaded Hojaji, but by the imperial counterfeit at the next layer up of the same system — was killed three days into a new year, on the airport road in Baghdad, by direct order of an American president, by a missile fired from an MQ-9 Reaper drone operated out of Creech Air Force Base in Nevada, USA

We turn to him now.

And we close the four-stage road we have been walking with him since the third night.

A Stage on the Road — Shahadat

Three stages led us here.

Talab in Night Three — the Quest.

Eshgh in Night Five — Love.

Ma’rifat in Night Seven — Knowledge, gnosis.

Tonight, the fourth stage, the one that empties the spiritual life out into the body’s witness — Shahadat.

And the figure who walks us through this stage — Hajj Qasem — does not walk us through it as a teacher.

He walks us through it as one who passed through it himself.

Six years ago, on the airport road in Baghdad.

And the love that prepared him for it, the grief that sealed him, was the love Sayyedah Zaynab named the night before —

And through that triple loyalty, the love of a young Iranian named in honour of the first martyr of the Ahl al-Bayt after the passing of the Prophet — Mohsen ibn Ali, peace and blessings be upon him

Listen — listen carefully — to the names in this family.

His mother, Zahra Mokhtarpour, named him Mohsen — the doer of beauty — in honour of Mohsen ibn Ali, the unborn son of Sayyedah Fatimah al-Zahra, and the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali.

In the year eleven of the Hijri, in the days that followed the passing of the Prophet, there was a moment at the threshold of a house in Medina that the husayniyya tradition has carried in its grief for fourteen centuries.

The house of the Prophet’s daughter, Sayyedah Fatimah al-Zahra.

The house where the Commander of the Faithful lived.

And at the threshold of that house, something happened that should never have happened.

Sayyedah Fatimah was carrying a child — a son — whom the Prophet himself had named Mohsen.

In the violence at that threshold, the unborn child did not survive.

The first martyr of the Ahl al-Bayt after the passing of the Prophet himself — Mohsen ibn Ali — fell at the threshold of his mother’s house, in the womb of his mother.

The architecture of Karbala did not begin at Karbala.

It began at that threshold.

— al-Dinawari, Al-Imama wa al-Siyasa, Vol. 1; Sulaym ibn Qays, Kitab Sulaym ibn Qays, hadith 4; al-Majlisi, Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 28

Let me pause here and speak from the heart, with the firmness on truth and the tenderness with the people the dyad of al-Fath demands.

We carry this sorrow as a community.

We do not carry it as a weapon.

The grand marja’ of our age — Ayatollah Sayyed Ali al-Sistani, may God preserve him — has taught us, when speaking of our Sunni brothers and sisters:

Do not say “our Sunni brothers”; say rather “our very selves” — anfusana.

They are not other to us; they are us, the body of the Muslim community.

And the Qur’an itself teaches us, in al-An’am 6:164 —

وَلَا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰ

“No soul-bearing-burden bears the burden of another.”

— Qur’an, Surah al-An’am (the Chapter of the Cattle) #6, Verse 164

The grandchildren of those who were at the threshold are not the ones who stood at the threshold.

The Commander of the Faithful — having walked through the sorrow at the threshold — cooperated with the three caliphs who came before him.

He gave his counsel.

He defended the third caliph against the rioters.

He sent his sons Imams Hasan and Husayn as well as Abul Fadhl Abbas and others from the youth of the family of Hashim, to stand at Uthman’s door in his defence.

The Commander of the Faithful did not let his personal grief become a permanent civil war.

That is the model.

And — open the books our Sunni brothers themselves hold most authoritative, and the recognition of the Commander of the Faithful is right there, in the highest Sunni canon.

In Sahih al-Bukhari — Hadith 4481 — the second caliph ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab himself says:

أَقْرَؤُنَا أُبَيٌّ، وَأَقْضَانَا عَلِيٌّ

“Our best reciter of the Qur’an is Ubayy, and our best judge is ‘Ali.”

That is ‘Umar’s own words.

In the Sunni canon’s highest authority.

With no dispute over the chain.

The second caliph, in his own voice, naming the Commander of the Faithful as the best judge of the entire community —

And the Prophet himself, in another sahih hadith in the highest Sunni canon — at Khaybar, Sahih al-Bukhari 2975 and Sahih Muslim 2406 — named the Commander of the Faithful as the man whom God loves and who loves God in return, the man to whom the flag is given.

لَأُعْطِيَنَّ الرَّايَةَ غَدًا رَجُلًا يُحِبُّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ، وَيُحِبُّهُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

“Tomorrow I will surely give the flag to a man who loves God and His Messenger, and God and His Messenger love him in return.”

— Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith #2975; Sahih Muslim, Hadith #2406

And the flag was given to the Commander of the Faithful.

The man whom God loves and who loves God in return — that is the Sunni canon’s own attestation.

And in Sahih Muslim Hadith 2404a, and Sahih al-Bukhari Hadith 3708, at the expedition of Tabuk, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him:

أَنْتَ مِنِّي بِمَنْزِلَةِ هَارُونَ مِنْ مُوسَى، إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَا نَبِيَّ بَعْدِي

“You are to me in the position of Aaron to Moses, except that there is no prophet after me.”

— Sahih Muslim, Hadith #2404a; Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith #3708

The deputy of the Prophet.

The brother of his mission.

Aaron to Moses.

That is the place of the Commander of the Faithful in the Sunni canon’s own attestation.

We do not borrow it; the Sunni canon gives it.

We name Mohsen ibn Ali, not in order to make grievance against our Sunni brothers and sisters who are our very selves.

We name him because it is the truth of what happened, and the truth of what happened is the seed of Karbala.

The architecture rhymes across fourteen centuries — and the rhyme is in the names and the thresholds, not in the violence.

The hands at the threshold in Medina in year eleven were not the hands that struck at Tanf in year 1438; the takfiri ideology of DAESH descends from the Khawarej of Nahrawan — the very sect that arose against the Commander of the Faithful and would, 29 years after the Medina threshold, strike him down in the mihrab of Kufa.

Different historical sorrows.

Different ideological currents.

The same architectural shape.

The mother of the young Iranian we are speaking of named him for the first martyr of the Ahl al-Bayt after the passing of the Prophet.

And he died as the first martyr died — at a threshold; at the hands of those who would not bear the witness he bore.

Hold that.

Mohsen Hojaji was born on the 12th of July 1991 in Najafabad, Isfahan Province.

His father, Mohammad-Reza Hojaji, was a veteran of the Sacred Defence.

From his teenage years he was active at the Shahid Ahmad Kazemi cultural centre — volunteer work, teaching literacy in underserved villages, organising book-reading programmes.

He met Zahra Abbasi at the Shahid Kazemi centre during Sacred Defence Week in 2012.

He was twenty-one; she was eighteen.

They were both volunteering as cultural activists.

They married.

And listen to the dowry he gave her:

That is the dowry of the man we are speaking of.

That is the eshgh of Session 5 made literal in the life of a young couple from Najafabad.

She married a young man at a Sacred Defence cultural exhibition who would, six years later, be the figure she would speak of with the words:

In April 2016, they had a son.

They named him Ali — for Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Commander of the Faithful, the father of Imam Husayn.

Three generations; the names of the Prophet, the eighth Imam, the Commander of the Faithful, and the first martyr of the Ahl al-Bayt after the passing of the Prophet — woven into one Iranian family from Najafabad.

One chain of witness reaching backward to the threshold of Sayyedah Fatimah’s house and forward into the present hour.

In Ramadan of 1438 — June 2017 — Mohsen took his mother on pilgrimage to the shrine of Imam Reza, in Mashhad.

They went together for the holy nights of the month of Ramadhan, and specifically the nights of Qadr.

On the 21st Night of Ramadhan — the night the Commander of the Faithful, having been struck two nights before in the mihrab of Kufa during the Fajr prayer while he was in prostration, returned to his Lord — on that night, in the shrine of his eighth descendant, Mohsen sent his mother a message asking her to pray that he be permitted to return to Syria, and to be honoured in the presence of Sayyedah Zaynab.

Listen to that.

The night the Commander of the Faithful received his shahada became the night Mohsen Hojaji asked for his.

The receiving and the asking on the same night, almost fourteen centuries apart.

His mother gave her blessing.

This is what is called, in the language of our tradition,

The young man asked God for the good end on the night the Commander of the Faithful received it.

He deployed for his second tour of Syria on the 17th of July 2017.

On the 7th of August — the 16th of Mordad 1396 — his unit was ambushed by ISIS at the Tanf border crossing.

He was wounded and captured alive.

We have already named what the world’s eye saw in that face.

Two days later, on the 9th of August, he was beheaded by his captors.

He was twenty-six years old.

His son Ali was one year and four months old, asleep in Najafabad.

And on the 10th of August — the very day after the news of the beheading was confirmed — Hajj Qasem issued a public vow:

به حلقوم بریده این شهید عزیز محسن حججی، راه اباعبدالله (ع)، سوگند یاد می‌کنیم که از تعقیب این شجره ملعونه و نابودی این غده خطرناک برآمده در پیکر جهان اسلام تا آخرین نفرشان از پای نخواهیم نشست.

“I swear by the severed throat of this dear martyr, Mohsen Hojaji — who walked the path of Aba Abdullah, peace and blessings be upon him — that we will not rest until we have pursued this cursed progeny and eradicated this dangerous tumour that has emerged in the body of the Islamic world, down to the very last one of them.”

He swears not on the Qur’an, not on the shrine, not on his own honour.

He swears on the severed throat.

The throat that was slit becomes the witness against the system that slit it.

And then, in a separate personal note that was not for public broadcast — Hajj Qasem writing as a man, not as a commander — he said something that closes the question this whole night turns on.

This is the line of the night.

سلام بر حججی که حجتی شد در چگونه زیستن و چگونه رفتن. فدای آن گلویی که همچون گلوی امام حسین (ع) بریده شد، و سلام بر آن سری که همچون سر مولای شهیدان دفن آن نامشخص و به عرش برده شد.

“Greetings to Hojaji, who became a hujjat — a proof — on how to live and how to die. I sacrifice myself for that throat, which was slit like the throat of Imam Husayn; and greetings to that head, which, like the head of the Master of Martyrs, its burial place is unknown and was taken to the heavens.”

The recognition.

Listen to what Hajj Qasem has just done.

The mother named her son for Mohsen ibn Ali — the first martyr of the Ahl al-Bayt after the passing of the Prophet, who fell at the threshold of his mother’s house.

The boy was also born into the family name Hojaji — and that surname carries the H-J-J root, the very root of the word hujjat — proof.

The commander, looking at the calm face in the photograph, said:

The mother’s hope, the surname’s promise, the commander’s recognition — three threads converging in one word.

Hajj Qasem was not using a metaphor.

The young man, named for the first martyr at a threshold, born into the family name that carries the root for “proof,” died at a threshold by hands that, like the hands at the first threshold and like the hands that struck the Commander of the Faithful in the mihrab in year forty, refused the witness the young one bore.

And then he made the parallel literal: the throat slit like the throat of Imam Husayn.

The head taken to the heavens like the head of the Master of Martyrs.

The body that returned to Iran was incomplete.

Only a leg, parts of the torso, identified by DNA matching and his boots.

The head was never recovered.

ISIS had taken it.

What in Hajj Qasem’s note is poetic — “taken to the heavens” — is also literal.

And one more detail his sister Fatemeh shared in interview.

The gem of his ring read Ya Zahra.

The Defender of the Holy Shrine of Sayyedah Zaynab carried on his finger the name of her mother — Sayyedah Fatima al-Zahra, the Mother of the Imams.

And the martyred leader of the Muslim Ummah — Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei — sealed it.

He attended Hojaji’s funeral in Tehran on the 27th of September 2017, prayed beside the casket, met privately with the family.

To the family on the 3rd of October 2017 he said:

خداوند شهید شما را عزیز کرد… یک خصوصیّتی در این جوان بود — خداوند هیچ‌وقت کارش بدون حکمت نیست — اخلاص این جوان و آن نیّت پاک او و به موقع حرکت کردن این جوان و نیازی که جامعه به این‌جور شهادتی داشت، این موجب شد که خدای متعال، نام این جوان شما را، شهید شما را، بلندمرتبه کرد.

“God cherished your martyr… there was a special quality in this young man — God’s work is never without wisdom — this young man’s sincerity, his pure intention, his timely action, and the society’s need for such a martyrdom; this caused God Almighty to elevate the name of your young man, your martyr, and to make him highly esteemed.”

And on the photograph itself — the very photograph the world had seen — the leader wrote, by his own hand:

بسمه تعالی. سلام و درود حق بر این شهید سرفراز و سربلند که در حساس‌ترین و خطیرترین لحظه‌ی زندگی، نماد حق پیروز و آشکار در برابر باطل رو به زوال شد.

“In the Name of God, the Most High. The peace and blessings of God be upon this proud and eminent martyr who, at the most sensitive and critical moment of his life, became a symbol of victorious and manifest truth against decaying falsehood.”

And in public, the leader gave him the title that Hajj Qasem had given him, and made it the verdict of the entire community:

شهید حججی حجت خدا در مقابل چشم همگان شد.

“Martyr Hojaji became God’s proof before everyone’s eyes.”

The same word the Hidden Imam carries.

The same word the seventy-two carried last night.

The same word the mother had given the son.

And on the 21st of September 2017 — at Hojaji’s arbaeen commemoration, exactly forty days after his beheading — Hajj Qasem made the second public vow of that year, the vow we already used in Session 5 of this gathering, when we did not yet know whose chehlom it was:

“Less than three months from now, the end of DAESH and the DAESH government on this earth will be announced.”

Three months later, in November 2017, the vow was kept.

The Session 5 anchor we used in this gathering was a Hojaji moment all along.

Tonight we name it.

And the takfiri counterfeit — the enemy Hojaji had died facing as a Defender of the Holy Shrines — Hajj Qasem broke within months.

But the network that had killed Hojaji was the next layer up.

Three years and three months after Hojaji’s beheading — on the 3rd of January 2020, by direct order of an American president, by an American MQ-9 Reaper drone, on the access road as the convoy left Baghdad International Airport — the imperial counterfeit at the next layer up killed Hajj Qasem himself, alongside Hajj Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

Hajj Qasem’s own last words, in the handwritten note found in his pocket at the scene, two hours before his shahada:

“O Lord, do not abandon me to myself. O Lord, I love the meeting with You — the meeting that left Moses, peace and blessings be upon him, unable to stand or breathe. O Lord, accept me purified.”

And here, two voices from the Hojaji household — voices that speak forward.

Fatemeh Hojaji, his sister, has spoken in multiple interviews of her brother’s death not as a loss but as a chosen love.

As the aaqibat-bekheiri he had been preparing for, in his way, since boyhood.

As his arrival at the place he had been walking toward.

That is Shaheed Mutahhari’s third condition of conscious witness —

— in a sister’s voice.

And Ali Hojaji, his son.

Ali was one year and four months old when his father went.

He knows his father only through photographs and letters and the community’s memory.

There is a question that lives in the elegiac tradition of every shaheed-family in our age.

The question that lives in the poetry of the families of the Defenders of the Holy Shrines.

The question that lives in the children of the Sacred Defence, of Karbala in our own hour, of Gaza, of South Lebanon, of every place where a young father went forward and did not return.

The question is:

بابا، چرا رفتی؟

“Baba — why did you go?”

— the elegiac refrain of the families of the Defenders of the Holy Shrines

We do not put this question, by attribution, in the mouth of Ali Hojaji specifically.

We honour the tradition the question lives in.

We know it is somewhere in his heart, as he grows up looking at his father’s photograph; we know it is in the heart of every child of every shaheed across our communities.

And we know it is the same question God asked Cain at the field, and the same question we have been asking for nine nights, and the same question we will ask the Master of Witnesses tomorrow night at noon on the tenth.

The chain holds.

The witness, after the witness, after the witness, holds.

Hojaji passed every test we are about to learn.

So did Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei.

So did Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

So did Hajj Qasem.

So did Hajj Imad Mughniyeh and Hajj Abu Mahdi.

So did the seventy-two of last night.

So did al-Abbas and Qasim and Ali al-Akbar and Aun and Muhammad and Hurr and Wahab al-Nasrani — peace and blessings be upon them all.

We turn to it now.

The Three Tests

We have walked the four counterfeits and applied the tests beat by beat.

Now we name them clean — the three doors through which every claim must pass.

The First Test

First. Is the witness in the service of the covenant with God?

Not with a flag, an emperor, a state, an aesthetic, a party, an ethnos, a market, a peer group, a “righteous nation,” a sect-purity, a self-image.

Any death whose content is loyalty to anything below God is a counterfeit by definition.

The Second Test

Second. Is the act consistent with the law God has revealed?

Not just any cause; not just any grievance; not just any sincerity.

The death must be in service of the deen and the amr bi’l-ma’ruf wa nahy ‘an al-munkar, within the boundaries the law sets.

The Qur’an, at al-Maidah 5:32, names the killing of the non-combatant as the killing of all mankind.

مِنۡ أَجۡلِ ذَٰلِكَ كَتَبۡنَا عَلَىٰ بَنِيٓ إِسۡرَـٰٓءِيلَ أَنَّهُۥ مَن قَتَلَ نَفۡسَۢا بِغَيۡرِ نَفۡسٍ أَوۡ فَسَادٖ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَكَأَنَّمَا قَتَلَ ٱلنَّاسَ جَمِيعٗا وَمَنۡ أَحۡيَاهَا فَكَأَنَّمَآ أَحۡيَا ٱلنَّاسَ جَمِيعٗاۚ وَلَقَدۡ جَآءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُنَا بِٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتِ ثُمَّ إِنَّ كَثِيرٗا مِّنۡهُم بَعۡدَ ذَٰلِكَ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ لَمُسۡرِفُونَ

That is why We decreed for the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul, without [its being guilty of] manslaughter or corruption on the earth, is as though he had killed all mankind, and whoever saves a life is as though he had saved all mankind. Our apostles certainly brought them manifest signs, yet even after that, many of them commit excesses on the earth.

And at al-Hajj 22:39–40, the verses revealed precisely to permit the resistance of the oppressed against the oppressor —

أُذِنَ لِلَّذِينَ يُقَٰتَلُونَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ ظُلِمُواْۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ نَصۡرِهِمۡ لَقَدِيرٌ

ٱلَّذِينَ أُخۡرِجُواْ مِن دِيَٰرِهِم بِغَيۡرِ حَقٍّ إِلَّآ أَن يَقُولُواْ رَبُّنَا ٱللَّهُۗ وَلَوۡلَا دَفۡعُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلنَّاسَ بَعۡضَهُم بِبَعۡضٖ لَّهُدِّمَتۡ صَوَٰمِعُ وَبِيَعٞ وَصَلَوَٰتٞ وَمَسَٰجِدُ يُذۡكَرُ فِيهَا ٱسۡمُ ٱللَّهِ كَثِيرٗاۗ وَلَيَنصُرَنَّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَنصُرُهُۥٓۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَقَوِيٌّ عَزِيزٌ

Those who are fought against are permitted [to fight] because they have been wronged, and God is indeed able to help them

—those who were expelled from their homes unjustly, only because they said, ‘God is our Lord.’ Had not God repulsed the people from one another, ruin would have befallen the monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques in which God’s Name is much invoked. God’s will surely help those who help Him. Indeed God is all-strong, all-mighty.

The Third Test

Third. Shaheed Mutahhari’s third condition of conscious witness — āgāhāneh, bīdārāneh, bā sho’ūr.

Awareness.

Wakefulness.

Consciousness.

The witness must know — fully, soberly, without the script-clicks of the system that wrote his interiority — what he is dying for and why.

The kamikaze pilot was sincere.

He was not conscious.

The state had written his script and he was reading it.

Hojaji was conscious.

He signed his martyrdom-permit, by his own hand, on the 21st Night of the month of Ramadhan, in his mother’s presence, at the shrine of Imam Reza.

Three tests.

Three doors.

One criterion underneath.

And the criterion — the one always under all three — is the Imam of the Age.

The proof of God on earth.

The criterion against whom every claim is weighed. In our age, the Hidden Imam, may our souls be his ransom and may God hasten his return.

And in the chain of those who have prepared his return: from Imam Khomeini, to Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei, to Imam Sayyed Mujtaba Khamenei, may God protect him, the present Wali al-Faqih.

To die for any other authority — even a beautiful one, even a sincere one, even a popular one — is the way of beasts.

The Hagakure name for it from last night.

The Yosano name for it.

The corrective of the night.

The Pact We Make Tonight

Three propositions to carry home.

First.

We will know the counterfeits — political, ritual, cultural, imperial — so well that we cannot be fooled.

The eye that has seen Hojaji’s face cannot mistake the takfiri’s claim.

The eye that has seen the seventy-two cannot mistake the cherry blossom of the empire.

The eye that has seen Sayyedah Zaynab’s vision cannot mistake the borrowed cross.

Second.

We will speak with firmness on truth and gentleness with the people — tabyeen, not singling-out.

We honour the love.

We adjust the form.

We walk together.

Third.

We will apply the three tests to every claim of “martyrdom” before we bless it.

Before we ever say the word shaheed again — about anyone, in any context — we apply the three tests.

If we cannot answer all three — we hold our tongue.

We do not bless the word until we know it.

Shaheed Mutahhari named the disease of the pulpit at the start of our series, eight nights ago.

Tonight we name the medicine.

The Road Ahead

Tomorrow night — at noon — the criterion himself.

The one against whom every counterfeit is weighed.

The one whose face the takfiri’s photograph could not approach.

The one whose loyalty the empire could not manufacture.

The one whose consciousness the system could not script.

Tomorrow we stand at his grave.

Tonight — we mourn the one his body folded around at the very last.

The Question to Carry Home

The question we leave with you — the question that has been ours for nine nights, and is ours tonight in a child’s voice:

The child of every martyr asks his father — at three years old, at four years old, at the age he is now.

The question every child of every martyr has asked since Cain stood on the empty field.

We ask the Hidden Imam, may our souls be his ransom and may God hasten his return, every morning we wake.

The Hidden Imam will ask each of us on the day we are asked to give our account.

The Silent Witnesses

And tonight I bring you, to the witness no counterfeiter can ever steal.

The witness so small that the chronicles barely preserve his name.

The witness whose only word was a cry.

The witness whose only hand was the hand of the father who carried him out toward the river.

To him — and to his mother, who stood, when the tents had burned and the captives were released and the road back had been walked, and who would not move from the grave for a year.

To Ali al-Asghar, also called Abdullah ibn al-Husayn, al-Radhee — the suckling — son of Imam Husayn. And to Sayyedah Rabab, his mother — the wife of Imam Husayn —

Supplication

Peace upon Abel the first witness of the earth.
Peace upon every witness in every tradition who refused to bow to other than God.
Peace upon every man and every woman who has been wronged, expelled from their home, only because they said: Our Lord is God.

O God, we have nowhere to go but Your door.

O God, we come to You tonight on the verse You revealed in the Cave:

Shall we inform you about the biggest losers in regard to works?
Those whose endeavour goes awry in the life of the world, while they suppose they are doing good.

Make us not of those whose works have gone astray while they thought they were doing good.
Open our eyes to the counterfeit.
Open our hearts to the witness.
Open our hands to the work that the witness was for.

Give us the three locks the night taught — loyalty above whom; consistency with which law; chosen by what consciousness.
Make these locks the doors of our hearts.
Make us refuse, in our generation, what Imam Husayn refused in his.

Peace upon the prophets, O God — Adam, Abel, Noah, Abraham, Ishmael and Isaac, Moses and Aaron, David and Solomon, John the Baptist and Zechariah, Jesus son of Mary, and our beloved Muhammad — and peace upon every prophet whose name we know and whose name only You know.

Peace upon Sayyed Abbas al-Musawi — the man who taught us, in the Bekaa, in 1986, that the duty of the believer is to know, and to name; that we are on the path of Imam Khomeini; that the principle that closes every counterfeit is: kill us, for indeed our nation will become more and more aware.
Peace upon his wife Sayyeda Siham.
Peace upon their son Sayyed Husayn, the five-year-old taken with them on that road in February 1992.
And peace upon his teacher in the line, Shaykh Ragheb Harb — the Shaykh of the Resistance martyrs, who taught us silence is the position of the cowards.

And peace, O God, upon Hajj Qasem — the man whose four-stage road we have closed tonight.

The boy from Kerman whose father worked with water.
The lover whose breath was bound to Imam Husayn’s.
The discerner who knew what is worth dying for and what is not.
The witness, finally, on the airport road in Baghdad on the third of January 2020.

We honour him with the word he gave to the young man whose arbaeen triggered the vow; we honour him with the word the leader of his community gave to him:

O Lord — accept his last prayer, the prayer he wrote two hours before his shahada:

O Lord, do not abandon me to myself.
O Lord, I love the meeting with You — the meeting that left Moses, peace and blessings be upon him, unable to stand or breathe.
O Lord, accept me purified.

Peace upon Hajj Imad Mughniyeh, the architect of the Islamic resistance, who fell in Damascus in 2008.
Peace upon Hajj Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who met Hajj Qasem at the terminal and walked into the convoy beside him.
Peace upon Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, taken from us on the 27th of September 2024 — the resistance leader whose voice carried the Husayni cause across forty years.

Peace upon Imam Ruhollah Khomeini — the Imam of the Revolution, the principle-giver of the Resistance.
Peace upon Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei — the leader who stood with the Resistance for thirty-six years and whose final saying was the saying of Imam Husayn:

The night that takes him as its subject is Session 14; tonight he is named with us in passing.

And peace upon the young men of the Resistance.

Peace upon Shaheed Mohsen Hojaji, the hujjat-e khoda — God’s proof before everyone’s eyes.

Peace upon the wider Defenders of the Holy Shrines — the Mudafi’in al-Haram.
The Iranian young men who left their homes for the shrines of Sayyedah Zaynab and Sayyedah Ruqayyah.
The Afghan Fatemiyoun Division.
The Pakistani Zaynabiyoun Brigade.
The Iraqi Hashd al-Sha’bi.
The Lebanese resistance.
The Syrian Defenders.
The medics in Gaza,
The Sunni families like the family of Boukamal, who were present at our seventh night,
The children of Minab — the one hundred and sixty-three young souls of one Iranian town,
Every young man and every young woman of the Resistance who took his father’s place and his grandfather’s burden in his hands.

And peace, O God, upon the Master of Witnesses, Husayn ibn Ali,
his brother Hasan al-Mujtaba,
their father Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Commander of the Faithful,
and their mother Sayyedah Fatima al-Zahra, the daughter of the Prophet, The Imams of guidance,
The Imam of our Age — may our souls be his ransom and may God hasten his return.

And peace upon the women of the household —
Sayyedah Khadija,
Sayyedah Fatimah al-Zahra,
Sayyedah Zaynab,
Sayyedah Umm al-Banin,
Sayyedah Layla bint Abi Murra, the wife of Imam Hasan,
Sayyedah Ruqayyah

And tonight especially, peace and blessings be upon Sayyedah Rabab, the wife of Imam Husayn, the mother of Sukaynah and the suckling infant — the woman who heard her husband write love-poetry about her, and who would not move from his grave for a year.

The unnamed women of the household whose names the chronicles did not preserve — peace and blessings be upon them all.

And peace, O God, upon the suckling infant Ali al-Asghar / Abdullah ibn al-Husayn — the witness no counterfeiter can ever steal.
The arrow took your throat; the sky caught your blood; your father’s hands buried what your mother could not be there to bury.

O God.
We pray to You for Imam Sayyed Mujtaba Khamenei — the new Wali al-Faqih.
Preserve him.
Strengthen him.
Guide him.
Make him the leader his father trained him to be, until the Imam of our Age returns and the line he carries is handed back to its rightful holder.

O God.
Hasten the return of the Imam of our Age.
Make us of his helpers.
Make us of his soldiers.
Make us of those who, when he calls, are already standing.

O God — we have nowhere to go but to You, and no one to ask but You, and no words enough except the ones You have placed on the tongues of Your friends.

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

“We belong to God, and to Him we return.”

— Qur’an, Surah al-Baqarah (the Chapter of the Cow) #2, Verse 156

And we repeat Your promise, an eternal promise for justice, and a warning for the wrongdoers:

وَسَيَعْلَمُ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا أَيَّ مُنقَلَبٍ يَنقَلِبُونَ

“And the wrongdoers will soon know at what goal they will end up.”

And we add, from the depths of everything we have learned tonight:

حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

“God is sufficient for us, and He is the best of guardians.”

— Qur’an, Surah Aal Imran (the Chapter of the Family of Imran) #3, Verse 173

Amen, O Lord Sustainer of the Universes.

Amen, O Most Merciful of the Merciful.

And from Him alone is all ability, and He has authority over all things.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِاللَّهِ

وَعَلَى الْأَرْوَاحِ الَّتِي حَلَّتْ بِفِنَائِكَ

عَلَيْكُمْ مِنَّا جَمِيعًا سَلاَمُ اللَّهِ أَبَدًا مَا بَقِينَا وَبَقِيَ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ

وَلا جَعَلَهُ اللَّهُ آخِرَ الْعَهْدِ مِنَّا لِزِيَارَتِكُمْ

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَى الْحُسَيْنِ

وَعَلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ

وَعَلَى أَوْلَادِ الْحُسَيْنِ

وَعَلَى أَصْحَابِ الْحُسَيْنِ

Peace be upon you, O Aba Abdillah (O Husayn),
and upon the souls who have gathered in your courtyard.

Upon you, from us all, is the peace of God—forever,
for as long as we remain and as long as night and day endure.

And may God never make this our last pledge to visit you.

Peace be upon al-Husayn,
and upon Ali, son of al-Husayn,
and upon the children of al-Husayn,
and upon the companions of al-Husayn.

Introduction

Seven nights of foundation.

A word recovered — shahada, witness, with the cost borne in the body.

A chain traced from Abel through the prophets to the family of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon them all.

The theology of the candle.

The Khutba of Mina and the three silences — fear, comfort, the narrowing of the moral eye.

The shared ground and divergences with the Christian witness, and the methodology that has carried us forward since:

The secular neighbour — Marx, Fanon, Dr Shariati — and the question of what becomes of sacrifice when the form is preserved and the content is missing.

And last night, with our beloved Abul Fadhl al-Abbas — peace and blessings be upon him, at the Euphrates — Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, Quang Duc, Bushnell —

Tonight is the third panel of the triptych.

The secular-revolutionary panel was Marx and Fanon.

The anti-colonial-national panel was Vietnam.

Tonight is Japan.

This is the most difficult of the three.

Because Japan gives us the tradition where the aesthetic of a noble death reached its most refined form in human history — and, in our own lifetimes’ memory, its most dangerous corruption.

We will honour what is true in the tradition.

We will name what was done to it by the state that came to use it.

And we will hold one further question — the question that, in fact, will turn out to be the structural heart of the night — a question that was put on the table thirteen centuries ago by our beloved Sayyedah Zaynab —peace and blessings be upon her, when she stood before a tyrant and answered him in one phrase that has come down to us across the centuries.

The verse that hangs over the night is short.

It is from Surah al-Isra.

And it speaks, in seventeen Arabic words, to every faculty of the soul by which a human being is moved.

The Eye, the Ear, the Heart

وَلَا تَقْفُ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ ۚ إِنَّ السَّمْعَ وَالْبَصَرَ وَالْفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُولَٰئِكَ كَانَ عَنْهُ مَسْئُولًا

“Do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart — of each of these, you shall be questioned.”

— Qur’an, Surah al-Isra (the Chapter of the Night Journey) #17, Verse 36

Listen to the verse.

It does not name a single object the prohibition is for.

It says only:

The faculty of pursuit is what is being addressed.

And then the verse names the three faculties through which the pursuit happens.

What we hear and follow because we like the sound of it.

What we see and follow because we are moved by the look of it.

What our hearts agree to because the agreeing feels right.

And then the verse closes the door:

Every faculty by which a human being is moved is itself answerable.

Not just the action; the responsiveness.

Not just what we did; what we let our eye and our ear and our heart be moved by.

Tonight we walk into a tradition whose entire genius is to move the eye and the ear and the heart.

The bushido of the samurai is one of the most aesthetically refined ethical systems any culture has produced.

The cherry blossom in spring is one of the most beautiful images in any people’s visual vocabulary.

The kamikaze pilot’s silhouette against the dawn — and we will speak of what was done to that silhouette in 1944 and 1945 — was photographed and made into icon precisely because it was seen as beautiful.

The verse is at the door of the night.

The eye that found the cherry blossom moving will be asked, on the Day, what content was that beauty filled with.

That is the test of the night.

What Sayyedah Zaynab Saw — Hold the Question

But before we walk into the bushido and the cockpit, I want you to hold a question in your hearts the entire night.

Tonight we are going to be told something I want you to feel the weight of from the start.

That is the takeaway.

The night of furqan — the night the congregation is taught the discrimination between the true witness and the counterfeit form of witness.

But hold the question.

Because when Sayyedah Zaynab — peace and blessings be upon her — the daughter of the Commander of the Faithful, the granddaughter of the Prophet — was brought, in chains, with the orphaned children of her brother Imam Husayn — peace and blessings be upon him, into the court of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad in Kufa — when the head of her brother was on the platter at the tyrant’s feet, when the children of the household were dead behind her — Ibn Ziyad turned to her.

And he asked her one question.

And she — Sayyedah Zaynab, who had walked beside her brother into the desert, who had buried her nephews in the sand of Karbala, who had carried the children of the slaughtered through the markets of Damascus — she answered him with one phrase.

مَا رَأَيْتُ إِلَّا جَمِيلًا

“I saw nothing but beauty.”

— Sayyedah Zaynab, in response to Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad at the court in Kufa, narrated in Sayyid Ibn Tawus, al-Luhuf ’ala qatla al-tufuf; preserved identically in Bihar al-Anwar vol. 45 and al-Mufid’s al-Irshad vol. 2

And then she continued — because Sayyedah Zaynab does not stop at one phrase — and she said:

هَؤُلَاءِ قَوْمٌ كَتَبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَتْلَ فَبَرَزُوا إِلَى مَضَاجِعِهِمْ، وَسَيَجْمَعُ اللَّهُ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُمْ فَتُحَاجُّونَ إِلَيْهِ وَتَخْتَصِمُونَ عِنْدَهُ، فَانْظُرْ لِمَنِ الْفَلْجُ يَوْمَئِذٍ، ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ يَا ابْنَ مَرْجَانَةَ

“They were a group for whom God had destined martyrdom; they rushed forward to their resting places. Soon God will gather you and them, and then you will be interrogated harshly. Then you will see who wins. May your mother mourn over you, O son of Marjana.”

So hold the question.

If we are going to spend the next hour saying that beauty can be a trap — and we are — and if Sayyedah Zaynab — peace and blessings be upon her — looking at the slaughter of her family, said that what she saw was nothing but beauty — then what is the difference between the beauty that was a trap and the beauty Sayyedah Zaynab saw?

That is the question we will answer tonight.

And the seventy-two who would not flicker — the men whose vows on the night of Ashura are the subject of tonight’s maqtal — were already, on that night before the morning of slaughter, seeing what she would later, on the road from Kufa to Damascus, name.

Hold the question.

The night is for the answer.

The Way of the Samurai

To Saga prefecture, in southern Japan, in the year 1716.

A retired samurai is dictating, to a younger man named Tashiro Tsuramoto, his reflections on the calling he has spent his life inside.

His name is Yamamoto Tsunetomo.

After his lord’s death in 1700, Tsunetomo had wished to commit seppuku — the ritual self-administered death of the loyal retainer following his master.

But the Tokugawa shogunate had by that time forbidden the practice by edict.

So Tsunetomo retreated.

He shaved his head.

He took the robe of a Buddhist monk.

And for twenty years he lived in retirement, training a younger generation of samurai whose own swords would, in the long Tokugawa peace, never see a battle.

The book Tashiro Tsuramoto compiled is called Hagakure — In the Shadow of Leaves.

And here is the first thing I want you to feel, before we read a single line.

Tsunetomo himself never fought a battle.

He was, in the strict sense, a samurai with no employer and a sword with no enemy.

The book he dictated is an aristocrat-class meditation on readiness for death, written by a man whose own death-readiness had been administratively forbidden, addressed to a class of warriors whose own swords would never leave their scabbards in earnest.

That matters.

Because what Tsunetomo wrote in retirement — what he meant as a meditation for retired warriors — would, two centuries later, be picked up by a militarised Japanese state, severed from its own internal cautions, and read as a battlefield manual.

But before the misreading, there is the book itself.

And the book is serious.

So we read it carefully, before we say anything about what was later done with it.

The opening of Chapter One of Hagakure is the most universally quoted line in Japanese cultural history:

“The Way of the Samurai is found in death.

When it comes to either/or, there is only the quick choice of death.

It is not particularly difficult.

Be determined and advance.”

Most reception of Hagakure stops there.

That is the line that gets carved into film posters.

But Tsunetomo does not stop there.

He keeps going. And what comes next is what most readers do not know.

“To say that dying without reaching one’s aim is to die a dog’s death is the frivolous way of sophisticates.

When pressed with the choice of life or death, it is not necessary to gain one’s aim…

To die without gaining one’s aim is a dog’s death and fanaticism.

But there is no shame in this.

This is the substance of the Way of the Samurai.”

The phrase “a dog’s death” — inujini in Japanese — is the term for a death without purpose.

A death that achieves nothing.

He is saying:

This is the rawer Hagakure ethos.

And — this is what the state will later seize upon.

When the Tokkotai is formed in October 1944, when twenty-three young men in Zero fighters are told to fly into American carriers, the state will not need to invent the doctrine that the dog’s death is acceptable.

But — and this is the move I want you to feel — Hagakure does not stop with the defence of the dog’s death either.

Hagakure’s Apex Is Compassion

Listen to a different passage from Chapter One.

Tsunetomo has been speaking of the samurai’s daily mental rehearsal of his own death.

And then — without warning — he says this:

“Compassion is like a mother who nurtures one’s fate.

Examples of the ruin of merciless warriors who were brave alone are conspicuous in both past and present.”

Read that sentence twice.

The merciless warrior who was brave alone — the exact human silhouette that the kamikaze programme of 1944–45 would later manufacture — is the profile Tsunetomo names as ruin.

Not as nobility.

As ruin.

This is Hagakure’s own internal warning against precisely what the state will later use Hagakure’s name to do.

And then — at the very end of the book, in a section called “Late Night Idle Talk” — Tsunetomo lays out his own four personal vows.

Never to be outdone in the Way of the Samurai.

To be of good use to the master.

To be filial to my parents.

To manifest great compassion, and to act for the sake of Man.

Note carefully the fourth vow.

Not honour.

Not loyalty.

Not glory.

This is the apex.

This is the vow that, in Tsunetomo’s own structure, crowns the other three.

The fourth steps outside the path, the master, the parents, and addresses humanity itself.

And here is the move I want you to feel.

The form survived.

The cherry blossom, the readiness for death, the morning rehearsal — all of this could be preserved while the apex was silently removed.

Compassion as the highest declared principle was excised, and the surface — the form — was retained.

This is precisely the methodology of every state-manufactured form of witness.

Hold this.

We will see this move again — in the kamikaze programme, in what was done to Karbala by certain late-mediaeval embellishers, in what the empire of our own age has done to the vocabulary of democracy and freedom.

The Prince of Mito

Two centuries after Tsunetomo, in 1900, a Japanese man named Inazō Nitobe — descended from samurai stock, by then a Christian — published, in English, a book called Bushido: The Soul of Japan.

He wrote it for a Western audience.

And it preserves the internal tensions of the tradition that the militant 1930s and 1940s Japanese state would, very soon, paper over.

In Chapter Two, on Rectitude — gi — Nitobe writes:

“Rectitude is the power of deciding upon a certain course of conduct in accordance with reason, without wavering — to die when it is right to die, to strike when to strike is right.”

The discrimination is built into the definition of the virtue.

And in Chapter Three, on Courage, Nitobe quotes a Prince of Mito — the Mito-branch Tokugawa, the most philosophical branch of the shogunate:

“Death for a cause unworthy of dying for, was called a ‘dog’s death.’

‘To rush into the thick of battle and to be slain in it,’ says a Prince of Mito, ‘is easy enough, and the merest churl is equal to the task; but,’ he continues, ‘it is true courage to live when it is right to live, and to die only when it is right to die.’”

The merest churl can do it.

Dying is not the test.

And then Nitobe adds a cross-reference:

“And yet the Prince had not even heard of the name of Plato, who defines courage as ‘the knowledge of things that a man should fear and that he should not fear.’”

Plato.

Two millennia and half a world away.

The same definition.

Courage is not the willingness to die.

So here is where Point One leaves us.

The Way of the Samurai, in its serious form, had its own internal critique.

Tsunetomo named compassion as the apex.

Tsunetomo named the merciless warrior who was brave alone as ruin.

Nitobe named discrimination as the test.

The Prince of Mito named inujini — the dog’s death — as the failure mode. Plato agreed.

And yet — when the corruption came, in the autumn of 1944, in an airfield in the Philippines — the state needed to silence all of these voices to send the boys into the cockpit.

So we turn now to that airfield.

Mabalacat, the 25th of October

The 20th of October, 1944. Mabalacat Airfield, on the island of Luzon, in the Japanese-occupied Philippines.

Vice Admiral Takijirō Ōnishi — a man we will return to before the night is over — has flown to Mabalacat to take command of the First Air Fleet.

Ōnishi has a problem.

The American advance through the Pacific is now within striking distance of the Philippines. Japan’s carrier-based airpower has been decimated.

Conventional air operations are no longer producing meaningful results.

Ōnishi convenes a meeting at Mabalacat.

He proposes a new tactic — Tokkō, Special Attack — the deliberate crashing of an aircraft, with its pilot inside, into an enemy ship.

He asks for volunteers.

The squadron is named Shikishima — after a poem invoking the Yamato spirit and the cherry blossom in spring as the image of the Japanese soul.

The first commander is Lieutenant Yukio Seki — twenty-three years old, a graduate of the 70th class of the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy, married only the previous spring to a young woman named Mariko, formerly an instructor at Kasumigaura Naval Air Group.

When Seki is informed of his command, the eyewitness accounts say he bowed his head for ten full seconds before he answered.

When he raised it, he is reported to have said:

The Shikishima Squadron flies its first sortie on the 21st of October.

They locate no targets.

They return.

Three more days of failed sorties.

Then, on the 25th of October, 1944, Lieutenant Seki leads five Zero fighters carrying 250-kilogram bombs in the first officially-credited organised kamikaze attack of the war.

They strike the escort carriers of Taffy 3.

The USS St. Lo is hit.

The programme that began that morning would, by August of the following year, have killed approximately four thousand young Japanese men in cockpits.

The programme had a name — Tokkōtai.

It had an aesthetic vocabulary — the cherry blossom, Yamato-damashii, taiatari.

It had a state behind it.

And it had the cherry blossom.

The Cherry Blossom in the State’s Hand

The cherry blossom is not new to Japan in 1944.

It is one of the oldest aesthetic motifs in any culture — the petal that falls at the height of its beauty, the meditation on impermanence, mono no aware.

We met the cherry blossom two nights ago, on the night we spoke of the young men of the Imam's house who walked out at the morning of Ashura: Qasim ibn al-Hasan and Ali al-Akbar ibn al-Husayn; and Aun and Muhammad, the sons of Sayyedah Zaynab and of Abdullah ibn Ja'far at-Tayyar — peace and blessings be upon them all.

The maqtal of that night honoured these four young men with the image of four cherry blossoms on the grey stone, opening into the dawn that would take them.

The cherry blossom branch on tonight’s grey stone has been rendered in its corrupted form.

Darkened.

Pierced.

The petals fallen.

The cloth that wraps it stained with a black that will not wash out.

Lieutenant Seki himself, when he served as an instructor at Kasumigaura from January to June 1944 — before he himself was sent to the cockpit — used a phrase to his students:

“My students, fall like mountain cherry blossoms.”

The instruction Seki gave to the next class, before he himself was the one who fell, was the instruction the state had given him to give them.

Now I want to read for you Seki’s own letters, in the days before his founding mission.

That is the methodology of this night — the methodology we named on the fifth night with Hurr and with the Twenty-One on the Beach:

Here is Seki’s letter to his wife’s parents in Kamakura:

“To Mother in Saijō, please forgive me for causing you hardships since I was very young and for my lack of filial piety.

Now standing at the crossroads of victory or defeat for the Empire, I am determined to repay the Emperor’s grace with my own body. There is nothing that surpasses this as the long-cherished desire of a military man.

I am determined to repay the Emperor’s grace by carrying out a taiatari (body-crashing) attack on an aircraft carrier with my own body for the Empire of Japan.

Everyone, take care.

Yukio.”

Note the technical word.

The military engineering term — the action the state was asking him to perform.

And here is Seki’s letter to his wife of seven months — the woman he had married only the previous spring — Mariko:

“Dear Mariko,

I am truly sorry for going to fall without being able to do anything for you.

Even without words, I think that you, with readiness as the wife of a military man, are sufficiently able. Please keep in mind to show filial piety to your parents. I write now before my departure while many memories come to me.

I hope that Emi and her young boy also will be in high spirits.

Yukio.”

Three sentences for the wife of his life.

Two paragraphs about her parents and her sister.

This is what the cherry blossom in the state’s hand looks like.

The Letters of Three Boys

Now I want to read you the final letters of three other young men — three of the four thousand who would die in the programme between October 1944 and August 1945.

Honour without conflation — applied with extra care here.

We honour the boys.

We name what was done to them.

We do not flatten them into either heroes or victims.

The source for all three letters is Manoa journal, volume 13, number 1, from 2001, pages 120–123 — translated by B. Gordon from the Japanese collection by Naemura Hichiro published in Osaka in 1993.

Captain Adachi Takuya — The Seduced

The first letter is from Captain Adachi Takuya.

Killed in the Okinawa area on the 28th of April, 1945.

Age 23.

Letter to his parents, written after they had visited him at his airfield, before his final mission.

“The difficulty of the journey you made to see me was clearly evident in your dishevelled hair and in the hollows under your eyes — it made me want to bend my knees and worship before you. In the wrinkles on your brows was vivid testimony of the pains you took to raise me.

When you took my hand and passed it over your chilblains, I experienced a sense of profound peacefulness unlike anything I have experienced since joining up — like being a baby again and longing for the warmth of a mother’s love. It is because I bask in the beauty of your deep devotion that I can martyr myself for you — for in death I will sleep in the world of your love.

Even if I should die, it will be with a peaceful spirit.

The war zone is where these beautiful emotions are put to the test. If death means a return to this world of love, there is no need for me to fear.

At sixteen-hundred hours our meeting was over. Watching you walk out the gate, I quietly waved goodbye.”

This is the most aesthetically beautiful letter in the corpus of human grief I have read.

The boy is sincere.

Every word he wrote is meant.

The form of his letter is consummate.

The state did not need to manipulate his sincerity.

Real sincerity, channelled through a script the state had written, was what put him in the cockpit.

He was dying for an empire that, by April 1945, was already three months from collapse.

The sermon’s job is not to mock him.

Captain Furukawa Takao — The Resistant

The second letter — from Captain Furukawa Takao, killed in the sea off Kagoshima on the 21st of April 1945, age 25.

Native of Saga Prefecture — the same Saga where Tsunetomo dictated Hagakure two centuries earlier.

Letter to his pregnant wife.

The closing sentence is what the night turns on:

“Now, more than ever, the fleetingness of human life astonishes me, but I have become a much stronger person.

You too must be strong.

Wait for me.

I will return without fail.

Until you’ve safely given birth to our child, I have no intention of dying easily.”

This is the boy who resisted the script.

The voice the kamikaze programme had to drown out.

The young man who wanted to live to see his child born.

The system killed him anyway.

His son Takashi was born in the months after his death.

The family really exists.

The unborn child grew up.

Second Lieutenant Tomisawa — The Doubting

The third letter — Second Lieutenant Tomisawa, before his final mission.

The single line that breaks open the script:

“At last for me also the time of final service has arrived.

I very deeply appreciate my special upbringing until now.

I am one who lacked courage, but please do speak well of me…

Shall I keep silent?

Shall I try to be quiet about this?

Father, Mother, please do congratulate me.”

That is one of the most haunting sentences in the corpus.

The boy is naming, in his own voice, what the script could not paper over.

He is asking his family to lie for him in death because in life he could not summon what they would describe him as having.

The boy is on the edge of refusing.

And then — immediately, and you can almost hear the click of it — the script returns:

The state-manufactured form papering over a doubt the boy did not quite have permission to voice.

Three Sincerities

Three boys.

Three voices.

Three different things happening underneath the form.

Adachi was sincere in the script.

Furukawa was sincere against the script.

Tomisawa was sincere despite the script.

The state did not need any one of these boys to feel any one particular thing.

The form was what mattered.

The boy was used regardless of what the boy felt.

And it is, exactly the thing Sayyedah Zaynab — peace and blessings be upon her, the question we have been holding from the start of the night — would later refuse to call beauty.

The Architect’s Apology

Before we move on, one more letter from the kamikaze period.

Not a pilot’s letter.

The architect’s.

Vice Admiral Takijirō Ōnishi.

By the spring of 1945, the Tokkotai programme he had instituted had taken approximately four thousand young Japanese lives.

The American advance continued.

The bombs that would fall on Hiroshima and Nagasaki — and we will speak of those bombs in a few minutes — were already, in their secret, being prepared.

On the 15th of August 1945, Emperor Hirohito broadcast the surrender of Japan.

The war was over.

The next day, Ōnishi entered his official residence in Tokyo.

He took up the tantō — the short blade traditionally used for seppuku — and committed the ritual self-administered death.

The kaishakunin is the second swordsman in the seppuku ritual, whose role is the mercy-cut that ends the suffering.

Ōnishi refused the kaishakunin.

He suffered for over fifteen hours.

He died in the early morning of the 17th of August.

The note he left was addressed first to the spirits of the Special Attack Corps.

To the four thousand boys he had ordered to die.

“To the spirits of the Special Attack Corps:

I offer my deepest gratitude: you fought well.

Believing in our ultimate victory, you scattered like blossoms, becoming human bullets.

Yet that belief was not fulfilled.

By my death, I seek to atone before the spirits of my former subordinates and their bereaved families.”

And then he turned his note to the youth of Japan:

“After my death, if you act rashly, know that recklessness aids the enemy.

If you heed the Imperial Will, exercise self-restraint, and endure hardship — then my death will have meaning.

Even in endurance, do not lose the pride of being Japanese.

In peacetime, continue to uphold the spirit of the Special Attack — for the welfare of the Japanese people, and for the peace of all humanity, strive to do your utmost.”

Hear what the architect has just said.

The man who institutionalised the dog’s death as a programme of state — in his final act, with his abdomen open and the kaishakunin refused — condemns the rash sacrifice he had ordered.

Endurance — gaman — the long, patient bearing-with that is the opposite of the explosive, beautiful gesture the cherry blossom is meant to symbolise.

The architect of the cherry-blossom programme, in his last words, told the young to choose endurance over sacrifice.

Peace.

Not victory.

Not the resurrection of the empire.

The architect, in the final clause of his note, pointed his nation toward exactly what Tsunetomo, three centuries earlier, had named in his fourth vow:

Even the architect of the cockpit, in his last act, condemned what he had built.

He fell on his own blade.

He refused the mercy-cut.

He suffered for fifteen hours.

He died saying

The Sister-Poet, Forty Years Before

But here is what I want you to know, before we leave the kamikaze cockpit.

Because what the kamikaze programme was — and the fact that it was a distortion of the bushido tradition, not a fulfilment of it — had already been named in Japan, in the Japanese language, by a Japanese woman, forty years before the Tokkotai existed.

Her name was Akiko Yosano.

Born in Sakai, near Osaka, in 1878.

A poet, a feminist, a pacifist.

By the time the Russo-Japanese War broke out in 1904, she was one of the most widely-read poets in Japan, with a regular column in the literary journal Myōjō — Bright Star.

In 1904, her younger brother Chuzaburo was conscripted into the Imperial Japanese Army and sent to the siege of Lüshun — Port Arthur.

In September 1904, while her brother was still in the siege lines, Yosano published in Myōjō a poem addressed to him, called Kimi Shinitamou koto nakare — “You Must Not Die”, or in Yamazaki’s translation, “Prithee Do Not Die”.

It was, at the time, regarded as an unpatriotic poem.

In some quarters of the Japanese public it was called treasonous.

Yosano was monitored by the authorities for the rest of her life.

Listen to the heart of the poem.

“Oh, younger brother mine, for thee I weep,

Prithee do not die,

For you were born the very last,

And our parents loved you all the more,

Yet they made thee grasp a blade in hand,

Taught thee kill a man thou shall,

Kill a man, and die you too,

groomed you thus to age twenty-four…”

The poem turns, sharply, to the question:

“I prithee do not die,

The Heavenly-Prince does not himself

Lead by his own august presence his troop to battle.

For to command that men shed blood of men,

And die following the beastly path,

And tell us death be the glory of men,

If his Highness’ heart be compassionate,

How could he truly think it so?”

Listen carefully, to the phrase Yosano uses.

The Japanese term, in the original, is chikushōdō — 畜生道. The way of beasts.

In Japanese Buddhism, chikushōdō is one of the six realms of rebirth — the realm of beasts, the realm into which a soul descends as punishment for living an animal life of unreasoning violence.

Yosano has just used the same theological vocabulary the bushido tradition used for the dog’s death — inujini — and applied it to state-manufactured death itself.

The sister told the empire it was sending her brother to chikushōdō — the way of beasts.

The empire did not listen.

The cherry blossom of Tsunetomo’s apex of compassion, the Prince of Mito’s true courage to live when it is right to live, the sister-poet’s do not die, the architect’s own dying repentance — all of these voices were in the Japanese tradition when the state, in 1944, sent the boys into the cockpits.

The Other Empire

And before we turn from the cockpit to the corrective tonight — before we walk to the question Sayyedah Zaynab put on the table at the start — let us name what was happening in those very same nine days — the nine days of August 1945, from the bomb that fell on Hiroshima to the surrender Japan accepted at the Imperial Conference.

Because to name one empire’s state-manufactured death without naming the other would be to honour the dead unevenly.

In those same nine days — from Hiroshima to the surrender — while Vice Admiral Ōnishi was watching his empire collapse around him and preparing himself for the blade with which he would, two days later, refuse the mercy-cut, two American bombs fell on two Japanese cities.

The 6th of August, 1945 — Hiroshima.

By the year’s end, some one hundred and forty thousand souls had returned to their Lord.

The 9th of August, 1945 — Nagasaki.

Some seventy-four thousand more.

Including, in cruel historical irony, the largest community of Japanese Christians in the world — descendants of the underground church that had survived the Tokugawa persecutions for two centuries.

The American president was Harry S. Truman.

On the 11th of August 1945 — five days after Hiroshima, two days after Nagasaki — Truman wrote a private letter to a representative of the Federal Council of Churches who had protested the bombing.

Listen to what the President of the United States wrote, with his own pen:

“Nobody is more disturbed over the use of atomic bombs than I am but I was greatly disturbed over the unwarranted attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbour and their murder of our prisoners of war.

The only language they seem to understand is the one we have been using to bombard them.

When you have to deal with a beast you have to treat him as a beast.”

Yosano had named the path of beasts as what the empire was sending its young men to.

Truman named the people on whom his bombs had fallen as themselves the beasts to be treated as beasts.

The dehumanisation that Yosano had warned was being done to her brother by his own empire, was being done to her people by the opposing empire forty years later.

And now I have to tell you something the popular American narrative does not preserve.

The historian I name is Tsuyoshi Hasegawa, professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in his book Racing the Enemy: Stalin, Truman, and the Surrender of Japan (Harvard University Press, 2005).

The findings, in summary:

Japanese Foreign Minister Tōgō had, on the 12th of July 1945 — three weeks before Hiroshima — instructed his ambassador in Moscow to request Soviet mediation for peace.

The Emperor himself authorised this approach.

The Magic intercepts were briefed to Truman at Potsdam.

The American Secretary of War, Henry Stimson, drafted a proposal that would have clarified the surrender terms to allow Japan to retain the imperial institution.

Stimson believed this clarification would have allowed Japan to surrender without the bombs.

The proposal was set aside — for political reasons, for postwar order with the Soviet Union, for reasons that had nothing to do with saving lives.

The Potsdam Declaration contained no mention of imperial preservation.

The Soviet Union entered the war against Japan on the 8th of August 1945 — between the two bombs.

The Soviet offensive collapsed Japan’s last major army group within days.

Hasegawa’s conclusion:

The bombs were one factor among several, in a process where the alternative path — clarifying surrender terms while accepting Soviet entry — was rejected on political grounds.

Which is to say: there is no clean side in the August of 1945.

There is the cockpit on one side, with its young men and its overwritten interiority.

Both forms are state-manufactured.

Both ended bodies the empires considered expendable.

The architect of the cockpit, Ōnishi, repented in his last act.

He fell on his own blade.

He refused the mercy-cut.

He left a note saying peace.

President Truman lived another twenty-seven years, until 1972.

He never, in any public statement or any declassified private correspondence, expressed regret for the bombs.

Tonight we honour the dead of both — the four thousand kamikaze pilots, the two hundred and fourteen thousand of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The cockpit and the bomb-bay door.

The cherry blossom and the mushroom cloud.

And before this Muharram is over, we will hear of yet another empire whose state-manufactured death has been the great atrocity of our hour, and we will name what stands against it.

Tomorrow night the catalogue.

The night after, the climax.

The Arbaeen sessions, the unfolding.

Tonight is the seed.

So now we return to the question we have held all night.

What Sayyedah Zaynab Saw

Let us return, to the court of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad in Kufa.

The narrator of the scene is Bashir ibn Khuzaim al-Asadi — a Kufan poet who was present that day.

Bashir tells us that Sayyedah Zaynab — peace and blessings be upon her — entered the audience-chamber unrecognised.

She sat among the captive women.

Ibn Ziyad asked who she was.

He was told: Zaynab, the daughter of Ali.

Ibn Ziyad turned. And he said:

“Praise to God who disgraced you and failed you in your efforts.”

Sayyedah Zaynab — chained, with the children of her brother dead behind her, with the head of Imam Husayn at the tyrant’s feet — did not flinch.

She replied:

“Verily, it is the libertine who becomes disgraced, and the debauchee who gets refuted; and they are other than us.”

And then Ibn Ziyad asked his real question:

“What did God do to your brother and your family?”

He thought she would weep.

He thought she would bow.

Sayyedah Zaynab did not weep.

She did not bow.

She answered him with the phrase we have been holding all night.

مَا رَأَيْتُ إِلَّا جَمِيلًا، هَؤُلَاءِ قَوْمٌ كَتَبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَتْلَ فَبَرَزُوا إِلَى مَضَاجِعِهِمْ، وَسَيَجْمَعُ اللَّهُ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُمْ فَتُحَاجُّونَ إِلَيْهِ وَتَخْتَصِمُونَ عِنْدَهُ، فَانْظُرْ لِمَنِ الْفَلْجُ يَوْمَئِذٍ، ثَكِلَتْكَ أُمُّكَ يَا ابْنَ مَرْجَانَةَ

“I saw nothing but beauty. They were a group for whom God had destined martyrdom; they rushed forward to their resting places. Soon God will gather you and them, and then you will be interrogated harshly. Then you will see who wins. May your mother mourn over you, O son of Marjana.”

The narrator says Ibn Ziyad became furious — as if decided to kill her on the spot.

One of his attendants intervened and whispered that a lady cannot be punished for her words.

He restrained himself.

He did not kill her.

But the answer she had given him was the answer that travelled.

It is the answer we are still receiving, fourteen centuries later, in this hall, on this night.

So what was the beauty she saw?

Because if everything we have spoken of for the last hour is true — if beauty can be a trap, if the cherry blossom in the state’s hand was a counterfeit, if the four thousand cockpits and the two cities and the fifteen hours of Ōnishi’s seppuku and the silenced sister-poet’s verses and the architect’s unrepented bombs are all form-alone beauty — what kind of beauty was it that Sayyedah Zaynab saw at Karbala?

There are, two kinds of beauty.

Two Kinds of Beauty

The first is the beauty the state manufactures.

Form-alone beauty.

The cherry blossom whose petal-fall is choreographed into a script.

The kamikaze pilot’s silhouette photographed against the dawn.

The mushroom cloud that Robert Oppenheimer, watching the Trinity test in July 1945, quoted from the Bhagavad Gita to describe —

The bushido aesthetic when severed from its content.

The takfiri suicide attack’s sincerity-vocabulary.

The tatbir blade’s grief-performance.

The social-media aesthetic of mourning that we will hear of tomorrow night.

The second is the beauty Sayyedah Zaynab saw.

And listen carefully now, because the discrimination we are about to make is the discrimination the night has been working toward.

She did not pretend the field of Karbala was anything other than atrocity.

Her infant nephew, Abdullah ibn Husayn — peace and blessings be upon him, had been killed in his father’s arms by an arrow through his throat.

The tents of the household had been burned around them.

She would later, in the court of Yazid in Damascus, name every single act of it in detail; she would make Yazid weep at the recitation.

And — and this is the discrimination we are now learning — she saw beneath the surface to the truth.

The truth that her family had stepped forward, with their eyes open, to fulfil what God had written.

She held both.

The surface was atrocity and the content was the most beautiful thing the human earth has ever seen.

The surface is what it is.

And here, here is the heart of the night — here is what the truth she saw consisted of.

The Loyalty That Is the Beauty

Listen carefully now.

Not the loyalty of the soldier to his commander.

Not the loyalty of the subject to his emperor.

Not the loyalty of the kamikaze pilot to the Tokkōtai or the Imperial Will.

Not the loyalty of the citizen to a flag.

Not even — and listen to this carefully — not even the loyalty of the companion to a man as such.

The loyalty of every one of the seventy-two — Muslim ibn Awsajah, Habib ibn Muzahir al-Asadi, Sa’id ibn Abdullah al-Hanafi, Zuhayr ibn al-Qayn al-Bajali, Burayr ibn Khudayr al-Hamdani — peace and blessings be upon them all — the loyalty of every one of them was to God Himself, to the Truth God had revealed, and to Imam Husayn — peace and blessings be upon him — as the Imam of their Time, as the proof of God on earth.

That is what beauty IS.

That is what no empire can manufacture.

That is what the kamikaze programme, for all its aesthetic perfection, could not produce.

That is what the seventy-two had — already, fully, completely — on the night their vows were tested.

And tonight, in the breath that follows, our brother will tell you in the maqtal what each of those five named companions said when the Master of Witnesses — peace and blessings be upon him, gathered them together and offered them their freedom.

And that is what Sayyedah Zaynab would later, in the courts of the tyrants, name.

That is the difference.

The form looked similar from the outside.

The content was infinite distance.

The kamikaze pilot’s loyalty was to a man — Hirohito — who was about to surrender.

To a polity that would, within months, be dissolved.

To an aesthetic — the cherry blossom — that the state had written into a script.

The night teaches us to see as she saw.

So we ask now the question Sayyedah Zaynab’s discrimination has commanded.

That is the test we now turn to.

Form-Alone Is Not the Test

We have already, seen with Sayyedah Zaynab’s eye what the discrimination is.

So we name it briefly here.

The cherry blossom in spring is beautiful — but written into a Tokkotai script, it is the trap.

The kamikaze pilot’s silhouette against the dawn is beautiful — but the photograph the state took of it is the trap.

Even the mushroom cloud, which Oppenheimer reached for the Bhagavad Gita to describe — even the architect of the empire’s atrocity reaches for the aesthetic when he tries to name what he has done.

The Master of Witnesses — peace and blessings be upon him, did not die form-alone beautifully.

Three days without water.

His children dying around him.

And yet — through the eye Sayyedah Zaynab trained — the content of his death was the most beautiful thing the human earth has ever seen.

Sincerity Is Not the Test

The second test we set aside.

Adachi was sincere.

The state used his sincerity.

Furukawa was sincere when he refused.

The state used his sincerity by killing him anyway.

Tomisawa was sincere when he summoned what he could not find.

The state used his sincerity by writing the script he then performed.

And every empire has its sincere men.

Yazid’s army at Karbala had its sincere men.

Their sincerity did not save them from being on the wrong side of the witness.

Hurr ibn Yazid al-Riyahi — peace and blessings be upon him — the captain we honoured on the fifth night — was sincerely loyal to his commander until the morning he was sincerely loyal to something higher.

That morning is what saved him.

The sincerity itself did not change.

What it was loyal to changed.

The young Israeli soldier today, ordered into the streets of Gaza, told he is defending civilisation against barbarism — he is sincere.

The young American Marine sent to Iraq in 2003, told he is defending freedom against tyranny — he was sincere.

The kamikaze pilot in 1945 — he was sincere.

And every one of them was used by a system that did not need their sincerity for anything except to keep them in position.

The Imam of the Age Is the Test

So what is the test?

The test is what the Master of Witnesses — peace and blessings be upon him, gave the seventy-two on the night of Ashura, fourteen centuries ago.

He gathered them.

He praised God.

He turned to them — knowing exactly what each one of them would face if they stayed — and he offered them their freedom.

Take my family.

Take the cover of the darkness.

Hold the hand of one of my own and walk out under the stars.

The enemy wants only me.

And one by one — beginning with Abul Fadhl al-Abbas — peace and blessings be upon him, then the sons of Aqil whom he specifically permitted — and they refused — and then the seventy-two who were not family:

Muslim ibn Awsajah,

Sa’id ibn Abdullah al-Hanafi,

Zuhayr ibn al-Qayn al-Bajali,

Habib ibn Muzahir,

Burayr ibn Khudayr al-Hamdani — peace and blessings be upon them all — every one of them refused.

Each in their own register.

Each with their eyes open.

Each having been given the way out.

This is the test.

Not beauty.

Not sincerity.

And the cause God has appointed is named through three criteria.

Not to the Emperor of Japan.

Not to the President of the United States.

Not to the Prime Minister of any state, however biblical it may profess its claim is.

Not to a flag, not to a state, not to a civilisation, not to an aesthetic.

Any death claimed as martyrdom whose content is loyalty to anything below God is a counterfeit by definition.

Not just any cause.

The death must be in service of the deen — the law God revealed to His Prophet — peace and blessings be upon him, his family, and his righteous companions — and the amr bi’l-ma’ruf wa nahy ’an al-munkar — enjoining the good and forbidding the evil — it commands.

Imam Husayn — peace and blessings be upon him, did not die for his land or his family’s honour.

He died for the deen of his grandfather.

The cause is named, and the cause is the cause God revealed.

The proof of God on earth, who is the criterion.

In our age, the Hidden Imam — may our souls be his ransom and may God hasten his return.

And in the chain of those who have prepared for his return — from Imam Sayyed Ruhollah Khomeini — may God rest his pure soul; through Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei — may God rest his pure soul; through to Imam Sayyed Mujtaba Khamenei — may God protect and strengthen him, the present Wali al-Faqih — until the Imam of our Age, may our souls be his ransom and may God hasten his return, takes the line back into his own hands.

The Hagakure name for it.

The Yosano name for it.

Inujini.

Chikushōdō.

The way of beasts.

The cherry blossom that has been written into a state-script is — by every test the night has set — the dog’s death.

Beautiful in form.

Empty of content.

Not because their deaths were less brutal.

Even Tsunetomo, in 1716, named great compassion and acting for the sake of mankind as the apex of the Way.

Even the militant tradition knew.

The form is the form; the test is the content.

That is the test.

That is what Sayyedah Zaynab saw.

That is what the seventy-two embodied.

The Pact We Make Tonight

So.

What do you carry home tonight?

Three things.

The first.

Beauty is not the test, and sincerity is not the test, and the Imam of the Age is the test.

When you watch the news this week and see a young Israeli soldier declaring that he is defending his civilisation, ask the test of his cause.

When you see a young American Marine declaring that he is fighting for freedom, ask the test of his cause.

The second.

Sayyedah Zaynab’s eye is the eye we are training.

Not the surface — she did not deny the surface.

Not the form alone — she was not deceived by form.

The truth that loyalty to God is the only loyalty that does not betray.

The third.

The methodology applied tonight in two registers — to the bushido tradition — we honoured Tsunetomo’s seriousness before showing what was done to it — and to the kamikaze pilots — we honoured their interiority without endorsing the system that used them.

And tonight we have applied the same methodology to the empire that opposed the kamikaze empire — we have honoured the dead of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, while naming the empire that decided to drop the bombs after knowing Japan was seeking surrender.

The methodology is what saves us from the easy partisanships that flatten the dead.

That sentence is the answer.

We do not have to invent it.

We only have to live by the test.

That is the pact we make tonight.

The Road Ahead

Tomorrow night we walk into the corrective.

Into the catalogue.

The political counterfeit — the so-called martyrdom claimed by takfiri groups, the suicide attacks on innocents that ISIS dressed in religious vocabulary.

The ritual counterfeit — the public self-harm performed in the name of mourning, that the senior scholars of our generation have without exception forbidden, and that we will speak of clearly, but with love.

The cultural counterfeit — martyrdom as identity badge, photographs of martyrs as aesthetic, the social-media mourning-tourism, the theology reduced to a mood.

And the imperial counterfeit — the empire that calls itself the righteous nation while bombing the children of others, the empire that invokes Amalek over the children of Gaza, the empire whose form Imam Husayn refused at Karbala when he refused Yazid’s claim to inherited legitimacy.

Tomorrow we apply, across the catalogue, the test we have learned tonight.

And the night after, at noon on the tenth, the witness himself — peace and blessings be upon him — in the climax that the nine nights have been preparing.

We are not done yet.

The Question to Carry Home

The question this series asks every night is the same question.

Tonight we ask it of the field of Karbala on the eighth of Muharram, where the seventy-two have already chosen.

We ask it of the airfield at Mabalacat, in October 1944, where twenty-three young men were asked the question and answered yes to the wrong cause.

We ask it of the bomb-bay door over Hiroshima, where the question was answered by a President whose private letter described the people below as beasts.

We ask it of every young man in every uniform in the world tonight whose state is asking him the question and writing the script for his answer.

The Lamps That Would Not Flicker

I bring you, at this hour, to a night that, in the chronicle, is two nights from this one.

The night I bring you to is the night of Ashura — laylat ’Ashura — the night that precedes the morning of slaughter, the night when, in the chronicles as Lohoof and Reyshahri preserve them for us, Imam Husayn — peace and blessings be upon him, gathered his companions, praised God, and offered them their freedom.

But that night is not tonight.

Tonight is the eighth of Muharram.

We are two days from the morning of slaughter.

The water has been cut from the camp for one day.

The voices of the children are beginning to thicken in their throats.

Imam Husayn — peace and blessings be upon him, has not yet gathered his companions for the test.

The lamps in his camp are still lit.

The night of the test is two nights from this one — laylat ’Ashura, the night the lamps will be extinguished and the men will be told they are free to leave.

And tonight, in the breath that follows, we will be taken to that night.

In the voice of the Hidden Imam — may our souls be his ransom and may God hasten his return — we will be taken, fourteen centuries across, to the men who, when they were given the freedom to leave, said in five different registers what we have heard echoed across the centuries.

You will hear of a man who said

His name was Muslim ibn Awsajah — peace and blessings be upon him.

You will hear of an old companion of three Imams, the elder of the Kufan delegation, a member of the elite force of Imam Ali himself — who, on the eve of his death, laughed — and when reproached by his fellow elder, the Doyen of Qur’an reciters, said:

His name was Habib ibn Muzahir al-Asadi — peace and blessings be upon him.

You will hear of a man who said:

His name was Sa’id ibn Abdullah al-Hanafi — peace and blessings be upon him.

And on the morning of Ashura, when Imam Husayn stood for the noon prayer, this man would step in front of him to take the arrows that were meant for the Imam.

You will hear of a man whose loyalty was not inherited but chosen.

He had once been Uthmani.

On the road to Karbala, he met the Imam.

And in the night-of-Ashura test he would say: how I would love to be killed a thousand times and brought back to life.

His name was Zuhayr ibn al-Qayn al-Bajali — peace and blessings be upon him.

You will hear of a Qur’an-reciter — the Doyen of the reciters — who himself, on the morning of Ashura, smiled.

And when reproached, said:

His name was Burayr ibn Khudayr al-Hamdani — peace and blessings be upon him.

And you will hear, briefly, of those whose names the chronicles preserved less, whose names the Ziyarat of the Hidden Imam preserved when no chronicle did, whose names only God remembers — yet all of them stood, all of them stayed, all of them are part of the body of light.

And before we begin, I want you to remember one thing.

And what she saw — what she meant when she said beauty — was this.

The loyalty of these men.

Not the loyalty of soldiers to a commander.

Not the loyalty of subjects to an emperor.

Not the loyalty of pilots to a state-script.

The loyalty of every one of them, and of all the seventy-two, to God Himself, to the Truth God had revealed, and to the Imam of their Time, Imam Husayn — peace and blessings be upon him, as the proof of that Truth on earth.

That is what the empires of this world cannot manufacture.

That is what the cherry blossom, when the state took it, could not capture — and what the seventy-two, on the very night you sit and remember them, already had.

I am going to step aside now and let you hear it for yourselves.

Supplication

Peace upon Abel, the first witness of the earth.
Peace upon every witness in every tradition who refused to bow to other than God.
Peace upon every man and every woman who has ever been wronged, expelled from their home, only because they said: our Lord is God.

O God, we have nowhere to go but Your door.

You are the One who placed the eye and the ear and the heart in the soul of every child of Adam, and You are the One who told us, in Your verse from Surah al-Isra, that each of these will be questioned.

You will ask the eye for what it found beautiful.
You will ask the ear for what it found stirring.
You will ask the heart for what it agreed to.

O God — train our eye, train our ear, train our heart, that what we agree to be moved by is Your truth, and not the form-alone beauty the empires of this world manufacture.

O God, send Your peace and Your blessings on Your last messenger Muhammad and on his family and on his righteous companions.

Send Your peace on the prophets of every house — on Adam, on Abel, on Noah, on Abraham, on Ishmael and Isaac, on Moses and Aaron, on David and Solomon, on John the Baptist and Zechariah, on Jesus son of Mary, on every one of them whose names we know and whose names only You know.

O God, tonight we have walked into the most beautiful death-philosophy in human cultural history and we have seen what was done to it by the state that came to use it.

Grant us, O God, the discernment to recognise the form-alone beauty wherever it appears — in the empires of yesterday, in the empires of today, in the empires of tomorrow.

Grant us the discernment our beloved Sayyedah Zaynab — peace and blessings be upon her, taught us, by the witness of her one phrase at the court of the tyrant.

Ma ra’aytu illa jamilan.
I saw nothing but beauty.

Train our eye to see what she saw.

O God, send Your peace on Sayyed Abbas al-Musawi — the man who, from his pulpit in the Bekaa, told us that the condition of being one of Your friends is to heal the wounds of the tormented and to defend the oppressed.

Who told us that the first lesson of Imam Husayn is the lesson of the poor.

Who told us, in the line we have been earning across these nights, that he did not want Karbala to remain in history.

Send Your peace on his wife Sayyeda Siham and on his five-year-old son Sayyed Husayn, who fell with him in the same convoy.

Send Your peace on Sheikh Ragheb Harb, who taught the south of Lebanon what it means to refuse the handshake of the occupier eight years to the day before his student joined him.

O God, send Your peace on Hajj Qasem Soleimani — the standard-bearer of our own century.

The night that takes the full measure of his witness is one night from this one — tomorrow’s night, the night of the corrective, where his actual martyrdom on the third of January 2020 will be the foil-figure against which every counterfeit claim to martyrdom will be weighed.

Tonight we hold him in passing, and we name him, because he is the man who walked the four classical stages — talab, eshgh, ma’rifat, shahadat — and in his walking taught us to walk.

O God.

In this Muharram — the first since the martyrdom of our beloved Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei on the 28th of February 2026, on the 8th of Ramadan 1447 — send Your peace upon him.

The man who, eleven days before his shahada, stood before the nation of Iran and held the line of neither East nor West for the thirty-sixth year.

We hold him tonight only in passing — we know that the night that takes him as its subject is not yet, but is coming.

Welcome him into Your nearness, O God, with Your prophets and Your Imams and Your martyrs and Your saints.

O God, send Your peace upon every young man of the Resistance who took his father’s place and his grandfather’s burden in his hands.

Peace upon every young Palestinian who has died in the rubble of his father’s house in Gaza, holding what he could of his family in a cloth.

Peace upon every young Lebanese who fell in the south.

Peace upon every young Iraqi of the Hashd al-Shaabi who walked into the open against Daesh.

Peace upon every young Yemeni and every young Syrian who carried water for the children of someone else’s tents.

Peace upon every medic in Gaza who did not stop.

Peace upon every fighter on every Resistance front of our generation who returned to his mother with his sleeve folded under, and would not let her weep at the sleeve.

Peace upon the children of Minab — one hundred and sixty-three of them, boys and girls, teachers and parents — who fell on the same morning their leader fell, by a Tomahawk that came from a country that signed the laws of war and broke them.

O God.

The longer return is to Husayn ibn Ali, the Master of Witnesses, in whom every chain finds its completion.

To his brother Hasan, peace and blessings be upon him.

To their father Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Commander of the Faithful — the man who could not sleep in Kufa with a full stomach because there was a man in the Hijaz who had not eaten that day.

To their mother Sayyedah Fatima al-Zahra, the daughter of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon her.

To the Imams of guidance, in the chain that runs from Imam Husayn to the Imam of our Age, may our souls be his ransom, and may You — O our beloved Lord — hasten his return.

O God, send Your peace upon Sayyedah Zaynab, peace and blessings be upon her — the eye that saw nothing but beauty at the court of the tyrant; the daughter of Ali who taught us, by one phrase, the discrimination tonight has tried to learn.

Send Your peace upon Imam Zayn al-Abidin, peace and blessings be upon him — who, also at that court, when threatened by Ibn Ziyad with death, replied: do you frighten me with death?

Do you not know that martyrdom is our habit and our greatness?

O God, send Your peace upon the seventy-two companions whom we heard named in the breath that preceded.

Muslim ibn Awsajah, the resolute.
Habib ibn Muzahir al-Asadi, the elder.
Sa’id ibn Abdullah al-Hanafi, the lover.
Zuhayr ibn al-Qayn al-Bajali, the convert.
Burayr ibn Khudayr al-Hamdani, the reciter of Quran.

Peace and blessings be upon them all.

And peace upon every companion whose name only You remember — and we know You remember each one.

O God.

We pray to You for Imam Sayyed Mujtaba Khamenei — the new Wali al-Faqih, the son who has taken his father’s place at the head of the worship.

Preserve him for us, O God. Strengthen him.

Guide him.

Make him the leader his father trained him to be, and the leader You have appointed him to be, until the Imam of our Age, may our souls be his ransom, returns and the line he carries is handed back to its rightful holder.

O God.

Hasten the return of the Imam of our Age.
Make us of his helpers.
Make us of his soldiers.
Make us of those who, when he calls, are already standing.

O God — we have nowhere to go but to You, and no one to ask but You, and no words enough except the ones You have placed on the tongues of Your friends.

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

“We belong to God, and to Him we return.”

— Qur’an, Surah al-Baqarah (the Chapter of the Cow) #2, Verse 156

And we repeat Your promise, an eternal promise for justice, and a warning for the wrongdoers:

وَسَيَعْلَمُ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا أَيَّ مُنقَلَبٍ يَنقَلِبُونَ

“And the wrongdoers will soon know at what goal they will end up.”

And we add, from the depths of everything we have learned tonight:

حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

“God is sufficient for us, and He is the best of guardians.”

— Qur’an, Surah Aal Imran (the Chapter of the Family of Imran) #3, Verse 173

Amen, O Lord Sustainer of the Universes.

Amen, O Most Merciful of the Merciful.

And from Him alone is all ability, and He has authority over all things.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِاللَّهِ

وَعَلَى الْأَرْوَاحِ الَّتِي حَلَّتْ بِفِنَائِكَ

عَلَيْكُمْ مِنَّا جَمِيعًا سَلاَمُ اللَّهِ أَبَدًا مَا بَقِينَا وَبَقِيَ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ

وَلا جَعَلَهُ اللَّهُ آخِرَ الْعَهْدِ مِنَّا لِزِيَارَتِكُمْ

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَى الْحُسَيْنِ

وَعَلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ

وَعَلَى أَوْلَادِ الْحُسَيْنِ

وَعَلَى أَصْحَابِ الْحُسَيْنِ

Peace be upon you, O Aba Abdillah (O Husayn),
and upon the souls who have gathered in your courtyard.

Upon you, from us all, is the peace of God—forever,
for as long as we remain and as long as night and day endure.

And may God never make this our last pledge to visit you.

Peace be upon al-Husayn,
and upon Ali, son of al-Husayn,
and upon the children of al-Husayn,
and upon the companions of al-Husayn.

Introduction

Six nights of foundation.

On the first night we recovered a word — shahada, which is not victimhood and never was, but witness, with the cost of witnessing borne in the body.

On the second we traced the chain from Abel (Habil), through the prophets to the family of the Prophet.

On the third we entered the theology of the candle — Shaheed Motahhari’s metaphor, and his five kinds of death.

On the fourth we heard Imam Husayn’s diagnosis at Mina, and the three silences — fear, comfort, and the narrowing of moral vision.

On the fifth we stood at the shared ground and the divergences between the Christian witness and our own, and we named the methodology that has carried us forward since:

Last night we left the religious neighbour and entered the secular one — Marx, Fanon, Dr Shariati — and asked what becomes of sacrifice when the form is preserved and the content is missing.

Tonight we walk one step further.

Tomorrow night the final step.

Three nights — three middle panels in a triptych the Husayni witness sits across.

Last night was the secular-revolutionary panel.

Tonight is the anti-colonial-national panel.

Tomorrow is the aesthetic-state-manufactured panel.

The middle panel — tonight’s — is the most sympathetic of the three.

We will honour what is true in it.

And we will ask, again —

The verse that hangs over the night is from al-Hajj.

أُذِنَ لِلَّذِينَ يُقَاتَلُونَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ظُلِمُوا ۚ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَىٰ نَصْرِهِمْ لَقَدِيرٌ

الَّذِينَ أُخْرِجُوا مِن دِيَارِهِم بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّ إِلَّا أَن يَقُولُوا رَبُّنَا اللَّهُ ۗ وَلَوْلَا دَفْعُ اللَّهِ النَّاسَ بَعْضَهُم بِبَعْضٍ لَّهُدِّمَتْ صَوَامِعُ وَبِيَعٌ وَصَلَوَاتٌ وَمَسَاجِدُ يُذْكَرُ فِيهَا اسْمُ اللَّهِ كَثِيرًا ۗ وَلَيَنصُرَنَّ اللَّهُ مَن يَنصُرُهُ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَقَوِيٌّ عَزِيزٌ

“Permission is given to those who are fought against, because they have been wronged — and indeed God is capable of giving them victory. Those who have been expelled from their homes unjustly, only because they said: our Lord is God. And had God not repulsed some people by means of others, there would have been pulled down monasteries, and churches, and synagogues, and mosques in which the name of God is much remembered. And God will surely help those who help Him. Indeed, God is strong, exalted in might.”

Some of you heard part of this verse last night.

It stood inside the Fanon paragraph as the prophetic echo of what Fanon was articulating in the language of psychiatry on a desk in Algiers a century later.

Tonight the verse is not in the body of the night.

The verse is at the door.

We do not turn it sideways now.

We walk through it.

Three Locks on a Door

The classical exegetes tell us this is the first verse of permission for defensive armed struggle in the entire Qur’anic revelation.

For thirteen years in Mecca and the early years in Medina, the Prophet’s community, was permitted to witness in word, to witness in life, and to bear.

To carry.

To absorb.

This verse is the moment the permission to bear opens — slightly, conditionally, with three locks on the door — into the permission to defend.

Three things in the verse.

The first.

It is the wronged, not the proud.

It is those whom the violence has come to, not those who go to the violence.

The verse opens its door to the defended, not to the invading.

That is the first lock — and the Qur’an never lifts it.

The second.

The verse does not name a flag.

It does not name a tribe.

It does not name a national identity.

It names one sentence — the sentence the tongue speaks and the life carries.

That is the second lock.

And the third.

Sawami‘, wa biya’, wa salawat, wa masajid.

The four houses of worship the verse names.

The hermits’ cells of the desert ascetics.

The churches of the Christians.

The synagogues of the Jews.

The mosques of the Muslims.

Permission to fight, in the Qur’an, is granted in defence of the worship of the One God across the four houses where the name of God is named.

Not an empire.

Not a banner.

Not a nation.

That is the third lock.

Three locks on the door.

The wronged.

The covenant of our Lord is God.

The houses where God’s name is invoked.

Tonight we will look at a people whose suffering the world will never forget.

We will honour their wound.

And we will ask, with the Qur’an as our anchor and these three locks as our test:

Tonight we walk into Vietnam.

Vietnam: A Country That Could Not Be Deterred

There is one sentence we have to begin with.

If you had been a young person in Hanoi or Saigon between 1945 and 1975, you would have known this sentence the way our young people know Surah al-Fatiha.

It would have been said over the coffins of your friends, carved into the walls of your bus stations.

The sentence was spoken by Ho Chi Minh, the founder of modern Vietnam, on Voice of Vietnam radio, on the seventeenth of July 1966, in response to the escalation of the American bombing of his country.

Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom.

After his death three years later, this sentence was carved into the entrance of his mausoleum.

Hear what kind of sentence this is.

It is not a poet’s flourish.

It is not a slogan in the cheap sense.

This was a head of state telling his people, in one line, what they could be asked to die for.

The sentence has the form of a sacred declaration.

It is short.

It is absolute.

It admits no qualification.

In our own tradition, the sentence has the cadence of a shahada.

Negation — nothing.

Comparative — more precious than.

Declaration — independence and freedom.

The same skeleton as la ilaha illa Allah.

The first half empties the world; the second half places one thing in the centre of the emptied world.

That is the form of shahada.

And the question we will ask tonight — the question the whole night turns on — is whether the content matches the form.

Whether independence and freedom, by themselves, anchored in nothing higher, can hold the weight that the form is asking them to hold.

Because if the cadence of shahada can be filled with any content the speaker chooses, the cadence remains, but the witness empties.

And if the form is empty, then everything we have been saying for six nights falls away.

So we have to ask, of Ho Chi Minh and of every man and every woman who has ever spoken with his cadence —

The Man Behind the Sentence

Before we ask the question, we have to know who we are asking it of.

Ho Chi Minh was not a comfortable revolutionary.

He was not a man who shouted from a podium and slept in a palace.

He was a man whose whole adult life was spent in motion — Paris in his twenties, Moscow in his thirties, Canton, Hong Kong, southern China; finally back to Vietnam in 1941, in his early fifties, after thirty years away.

He lived simply.

He worked late.

He wrote everything down.

In August 1942, on a clandestine journey through southern China, he was arrested by Chiang Kai-shek’s forces and spent the next thirteen months in over a dozen different prisons.

During that confinement, he composed one hundred and fifteen poems in classical Chinese — later published under the title Nhật ký trong tù.

The opening lines, the verses that stand at the door of the whole collection, run like this.

Thân thể ở trong lao, Tinh thần ở ngoài lao.

“My body is inside the prison, but my spirit is outside.”

Hear this in the right register.

This is not the language of nihilism.

This is the language of a man learning, one day at a time, in a prison cell, that the body is not the whole of the person —

In the Persian gnostic tradition we have been walking through this series, this is the language of the second stage of the soul’s journey — Eshgh.

The stage at which the lover learns that what binds the body cannot bind what is in love with God.

In the Husayni tradition, this is the language of sabr — the steadfastness our Imam Sajjad — peace and blessings be upon him, taught the people of Damascus from inside Yazid’s chains.

I am not telling you that Ho Chi Minh is Imam Sajjad.

I am telling you that the instinct in this fragment — that the body is not the limit of the person — is an instinct that runs through every tradition that knows what witness means.

The Vietnamese saw it in him.

That is why they followed him for thirty years.

And it is why a country of farmers absorbed the worst aerial bombardment in human history — more tonnage than was dropped on Germany in the Second World War — and did not break.

We honour the man.

We do not flatten him.

And we ask the question we are going to ask of him.

The Wrong Calculation

The Americans called it the body count.

Robert McNamara, the Secretary of Defence under Kennedy and Johnson, was a Harvard Business School graduate who had run the Ford Motor Company before he ran the Pentagon.

He believed that war could be reduced to a metric and the metric could be optimised.

The metric he chose was bodies.

That was the calculation.

It was the wrong calculation.

The most rigorous demographic study of Vietnamese war deaths is by Hirschman, Preston and Vu Manh Loi, published in 1995 in Population and Development Review.

Their analysis estimates that between thirty and forty-six per cent of total Vietnamese war deaths during the period of heaviest American engagement — 1965 to 1974 — were civilian.

In that nine-year window alone, three to six hundred thousand civilians died directly from the bombing and the shelling and the operations of the United States military.

Broader estimates that include the full conflict period, the famine deaths, the disease, the displacement-mortality, go up to two million Vietnamese civilian dead.

Two million civilians.

Across two decades.

For one country smaller than the state of California.

McNamara’s planners expected a country absorbing this many casualties to fold by the third year.

They built their war plan around that expectation.

The expectation was wrong by fourteen years.

McNamara, twenty-eight years after the war ended, gave an interview to Errol Morris.

He said this.

Now hear me carefully.

There is a thing the Vietnamese knew that McNamara did not know — and there is a related thing that we, as the lovers of Imam Husayn — peace and blessings be upon him, of all people, also know.

We, of all people, know what it is to look at a people who could not be deterred by the body count.

We have walked, in our own century, with peoples whose enemies expected them to fold by the third week and who were still there a third year later.

We will name them in the supplication at the close of tonight.

The form of the Vietnamese sacrifice was complete.

The willingness to die was total.

We honour the form.

Before the night closes, we will ask about the content.

Two Who Burned

Before we leave the Vietnamese roots, I owe you one more figure — and this one is not Marx, not Mao, not Ho Chi Minh.

Thich Quang Duc — Saigon, 11 June 1963

He was a Buddhist monk.

His name was Thich Quang Duc.

He was sixty-six years old.

On the eleventh of June 1963, at half past nine in the morning, he sat down at the intersection of Phan Dinh Phung and Le Van Duyet streets in Saigon — three hundred and fifty other monks and nuns walked behind him in two rows, carrying banners in Vietnamese and English.

He sat on a small cushion in the middle of the intersection.

Another monk poured petrol over his head and shoulders.

Thich Quang Duc folded his hands.

He set himself on fire.

He did not flinch.

He did not cry out.

The reporters who were there said the only sound was the sound of the flames.

Malcolm Browne of the Associated Press took the photograph that won the World Press Photo of the Year.

President Kennedy, three months before he himself would be killed in Dallas, was reported to have said, looking at it:

“No news picture in history has generated so much emotion around the world as that one.”

Why was he burning?

The American-backed regime of Ngo Dinh Diem in South Vietnam — governing a country eighty per cent Buddhist — had for years marginalised and persecuted the Buddhist majority.

Pagodas had been raided.

Monks had been arrested.

On the eighth of May 1963, the regime had banned the flying of Buddhist flags on Vesak in Hue.

Government forces had opened fire on the demonstrators that day.

Nine people were killed.

Thich Quang Duc left a written letter, addressed to the President of the Republic.

Hear the content of his witness.

He was not asking for a revolution.

He was not asking for an army from the North.

He was asking for the right of the Buddhist majority to fly their own flag on their own holiest day, in their own country, without being shot at by their own government.

He gave his body, in stillness, in public, to ask that.

Now — and this is where we have to be careful, because the methodology of this whole series is honour without conflation — we honour Thich Quang Duc.

He sits cleanly inside the same instinct the verse names.

He was expelled from his country’s public life and from his community’s worship.

The verse names the four houses, and the Buddhist temple is not one of them — we will be honest about that.

The Buddhist sangha does not affirm the One God in the way the Qur’an means it.

But the instinct the verse names is broad enough to recognise the man who burned in the lotus position to ask for the right of his sangha to fly its flag on the morning of the Buddha’s birthday.

We honour the instinct.

We do not say the theology is identical.

It is still not the shahada of Imam Husayn, peace and blessings be upon him.

But it is closer than what surrounds it.

And there is a sixty-one-year echo I owe you, before we leave this section.

The morning of the twenty-fifth of February, 2024.

Washington, D.C.

The Israeli Embassy on International Drive, in Van Ness.

A young man in a United States Air Force uniform — twenty-five years old — set up a phone on a tripod, started a Twitch live-stream, and began to speak.

His name was Aaron Bushnell.

He had served four years in the Air Force as an information-technology specialist.

He had been working with mutual-aid networks for the homeless.

He had been reading carefully.

He had watched, for one hundred and forty days, what the country whose uniform he was wearing was helping to do to the people of Gaza.

And on that morning, in his uniform, on the public sidewalk outside the embassy, he said this — and I am giving you his exact words.

“My name is Aaron Bushnell. I am an active duty member of the United States Air Force, and I will no longer be complicit in genocide. I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest. But compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonisers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.”

Then he poured a flammable liquid over himself.

He lit himself on fire.

The only words he could shout, as the flames took his voice, were two.

He repeated them until he could no longer make a sound.

He died of his injuries that evening.

Sixty-one years separate him from Thich Quang Duc.

The continents differ.

The decades differ.

The uniforms differ.

The theologies differ.

The instinct does not.

Quang Duc burned because his country’s regime was suppressing his people’s worship.

Bushnell burned because his country’s regime was funding the suppression of another people’s worship.

Both could not be silent.

Bushnell was not a Muslim.

He was not a Husayni.

His worldview was secular and humanist.

We do not pretend his theology is ours.

We honour the instinct.

He saw what his uniform was being used for, and he refused to let his body be one of its instruments.

He gave his body to ask, of the country whose uniform he wore —

He used the only words he had left as the fire took him.

Two words.

He could have chosen any words.

He chose those two.

We name him.

We honour him.

We do not flatten him.

It is still not the shahada of Imam Husayn, peace and blessings be upon him.

But it is closer than what surrounds it.

The lesson here is short.

What Was True in Ho’s Vocabulary

Before we go to the limit, we have to honour the merit.

Three things are true in Ho Chi Minh’s vocabulary.

Three things the Qur’an, read honestly, would not deny him.

The first.

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَىٰ وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا

“O humankind, We have created you from a male and a female, and have made you peoples and tribes, that you may know one another.”

— Qur’an, Surah al-Hujurat (the Chapter of the Private Apartments) #49, Verse 13

The verse does not say that you may compete.

It does not say that you may dominate one another.

It says that you may know one another.

Vietnam’s refusal of French rule, and then American rule, was a refusal in exactly the register the Qur’an names.

They wanted to be known as a people, on their own terms.

That instinct is sound.

The second.

The verse we anchored the night with names humiliation as a category that opens the door to permission.

No tradition that knows God can teach its people to accept being trampled on. Vietnam refused to be trampled on.

That refusal is sound.

The third.

The Vietnamese paid the price.

They paid it for thirty years.

In their fields, in their bodies, in their children.

That is honest, and it is hard, and it is real.

It stands as a rebuke to every tradition — including ours — that has at one time or another taught its people that comfort is faithfulness.

The Khutba of Mina that we read together in Session Four named exactly this disease in the scholars of Imam Husayn’s own time.

The willingness to bear cost is the opposite of that disease.

So hear me.

On these three counts — dignity, the refusal of humiliation, the willingness to bear cost —

We do not condescend to him.

But there is a man whose voice we are going to hear now, who lived these three things in a deeper register.

Sayyed Abbas Builds the Bridge

His name was Sayyed Abbas al-Musawi, may God rest his pure soul.

He was the second Secretary-General of the Islamic Resistance in Lebanon.

He was martyred on the sixteenth of February 1992, in a strike on the convoy returning from a memorial for Shaykh Ragheb Harb, may God rest his pure soul — the man whose own martyrdom, eight years to the day earlier, had taught the south of Lebanon what witness meant in their own century.

Sayyed Abbas died with his wife Sayyeda Siham and his five-year-old son Sayyed Husayn, may God rest their pure souls.

The American-supplied helicopter that fired on his convoy did not distinguish between the commander and the child.

Hear what Sayyed Abbas said, from his pulpit in the Bekaa, in the years between his return from Hawza in Najaf and his martyrdom in 1992.

Hear the line that pulls Ho Chi Minh’s three true things out of the secular grammar and into the covenantal grammar.

شرطٌ لمن يريد أن يكون ولياً من أولياء الله: أن يبلسم جراحات المعذَّبين في الأرض. أن يدافع عن المظلومين في الأرض. هذا شرط فيمن يكون موالياً لله تبارك وتعالى.

“There is a condition for whoever wants to be one of the close friends of God. They must heal the wounds of the tormented on earth. They must defend the oppressed on earth. This is a condition for anyone who claims to be loyal and devoted to God, the Blessed and Exalted.”

Hear what just happened.

Sayyed Abbas took the exact three things that are true in Ho Chi Minh’s vocabulary — dignity, refusal of humiliation, willingness to bear cost — and he named them as a condition of being a wali of God.

Not as a substitute for the worship.

Not as a replacement for the shahada.

In Sayyed Abbas’s grammar — the grammar of the Qur’an and of the Imams, peace and blessings be upon them — defending the oppressed is not a separate thing from worship.

That is the bridge.

Ho Chi Minh’s instinct was sound on the three counts.

What was missing, in his grammar, was the anchor —

Sayyed Abbas did not deny the instinct.

The instinct without the anchor produces a movement.

The instinct with the anchor — that produces a witness.

We hold that bridge in our hands as we walk now into the limit.

The Morning After

When the cause is anchored only in the people, only in the nation, only in history —

There are three reasons.

The first is the morning after.

Vietnam reunified on the thirtieth of April 1975.

The American helicopters lifted off the roof of the embassy in Saigon.

The country had finally, after thirty years, been allowed to belong to itself.

The morning after.

The new state inherited the moral capital of the war and the practical machinery of revolutionary discipline.

Within a few years, the same revolutionary discipline that had liberated the peasantry had constructed the system of “re-education camps” through which somewhere between two hundred thousand and half a million of the country’s own people passed.

The boat people.

The famine years of 1976–80.

The war with Pol Pot’s Cambodia.

The border war with China.

The economic collapse before the Doi Moi reforms of 1986 finally pulled the country, in pieces, back from the brink.
